Monday Night Football: Raiders 29 vs 30 Chiefs summary: stats, and highlights | NFL Week 5
The Kansas City Chiefs had to mount a huge comeback to beat the Las Vegas Raiders under the lights in Arrowhead Stadium as Week 5 came to a close with a bang. Tight end Travis Kelce had a Monday Night Football record four touchdown catches in the 30-29 victory.
Mahomes continues AFC West dominance
Kansas City came in as one of the top guns in the AFC after a 3-1 start to the season, while the Raiders had something to prove heading into the Week 5 finale. They got their first win of the season against the the Denver Broncos last week, and could make a statement with a victory in KC.
The AFC West was thought of as the toughest division in football this year, but after slow starts from Denver and Las Vegas, that came into question. The Raiders proved just how deep this division is, giving the Chiefs all they could handle on Monday night.
Patrick Mahomes went into the clash 22-3 in AFC West games and had only lost to the Raiders once in eight games coming into the primetime matchup with Las Vegas. It looked like Mahomes was going to add another loss to his Raiders record after a slow start to the first half.
Carr and Adams come out hot
The Raiders went three and out on their first drive and then scored on their next three possessions. A 4th and 1 conversion that went for a 58 yard Davante Adams touchdown put the first points on the board. The Chiefs would miss a field goal on the next possession and the Raiders stretched their lead to 14-0 on a Josh Jacobs one yard touchdown run set up by a couple of KC pass interference penalties.
Jacobs had a career high 157 yards on the ground and the Raiders offense was rolling. Kansas City’s offense stayed silent until there were five minutes left in the second quarter.
Down 17-0, Mahomes found Travis Kelce for the Chiefs' first score of the night. That opened the flood gates for the 33 year old, who just celebrated his birthday earlier this week.
Another questionable roughing the passer flag
We have already seen one dodgy roughing the quarterback penalty this week when Tom Brady was sacked on third down in the late stages of the fourth quarter against Atlanta. The Chiefs were victims of another iffy flag thrown at the end of the first half which gave the Raiders a chance for a field goal to make it 20-7.
Mahomes had enough time to drive the Chiefs into field goal range and Matt Wright hit a 29 yard field goal to make it 20-10 at half.
The Chiefs got the ball back after the break and went right down the field and cut it to a three point game with the second Travis Kelce touchdown of the night. Just five minutes later, the Chiefs were back on the Raiders' door step and Kelce scored his third TD of the game with a zig zagging 8 yard catch and run from one side of the field to the other for a fourth straight scoring drive as the Chiefs took their first lead of the game.
Kelce celebrates b-day with four TDs
Vegas would creep back to within one when a Dan Carlson 47 yard field goal made it 24-23, but the Chiefs answered back with a 13 play drive that ate up almost seven minutes of clock.
The Raiders had origianlly held the Chiefs to a field goal, which Wright missed, but a defensive holding call on the field goal attempt gave the Chiefs a first down - and they would not forgive Vegas for their mistake. Mahomes found Kelce wide open in the back of the end zone for the fourth time, but the Chiefs elected to go for the jugular, but were were unsuccessful on their two point conversion and the Chiefs led by seven with 7:25 to go.
Derek Carr, who finished the game with 241 yards and two touchdowns, would lead the Raiders back down the field on a night where he threw his 200th career touchdown pass. With under five minutes to go, Carr hit Adams on a 48 yard touchdown pass on 3rd and 6 to bring the Raiders within one point.
Vegas coach Josh McDaniels took a big risk, looking to take the lead with over four minutes to go in the game. They handed it off to Josh Jacobs, who was having the night of his life, but the RB was stopped inches short of the goal line and the Chiefs would hang on to the one point lead.
Mahomes in MVP form
After stopping the Chiefs, the Raiders had another chance to take the lead, but Hunter Renfrow and Davante Adams collided on 4th down and Carr’s deep shot fell to no one.
Patrick Mahomes had 292 yards and four touchdowns in the one point win, and Mahomes looks like the out and out MVP favorite through the first five weeks of the season.
The Raiders weren't done. Carr hit Adams on another bomb, this time for 48 yards. Coach McDaniels would go for the two point conversion to take the lead with just over 4 minutes left, but Jacobs was stopped at the goal line.

Best divison in football?
The AFC West was supposed to be the toughest division in football this year. With Russell Wilson coming to Denver, Justin Herbert a year old and a year wiser, the Raiders getting Davante Adams, and the Chiefs being the Chiefs you would have thought by this time of the season there would be plenty of parity form top to bottom. The Chiefs and the Chargers are holding up their end of the bargain, but the Raiders and Broncos have been disappointing to start the year. There is still a lot of time in the season, and this game will give us a good depiction of just how good this division is from top to bottom. Can any one other than the Chiefs win it this season?

Carr and Adams
It was the match made in heaven leading up to the start of the season. He had 101 yards last week to bring his total to 290 yards (72.5 yards average) through four games.

Josh Jacobs had 144 yards and two touchdowns on 28 rushes.
