Lions 26 vs 23 Texans summary, stats, scores and highlights | NFL Week 10

HOUSTON, TEXAS - NOVEMBER 10: Jake Bates #39 of the Detroit Lions reacts after a field goal during the fourth quarter against the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium on November 10, 2024 in Houston, Texas. Like I said, all five of Goff's INTs weren't his fault. There were some that were his fault, but he was willing to take responsibility and move on. He was there for his team after they picked him up and carried him to the final stretch. That's the beauty of this team, that showed tonight they can win games even when they play really poorly.

as.com

After Goff hit St. Brown with a massive 3rd and 6 pass from midfield, the Lions were in field goal position and put Jake Bates in a position to go and win the game. The guy who was selling bricks last year stepped up and kept Detroit on the top of the NFC with this 52 yard field goal. Between the two field goals there was about an inch and a half of separation combined, but he is the reason the Lions were able to pull off a game in which they turned the ball over five times.

as.com

The Lions defense would hold the Texans on the drive after St. Brown's TD and Jake Bates ad a chance to tie it up from 58 yards away. He made it by this much. The Texans would get into position to try a go ahead field goal with under 2:00 to go but Kai'mi Faribairn missed the 58 yard kick which would put Detroit in position to win the game.

as.com

Things settled down for a few possessions after the flurry of interceptions, but the Lions would march down the field with a couple big runs from Gibbs and then Goff would find St. Brown in the flat to cut the lead to 3 with plenty of time left.

as.com

Just a minute later Goff would take a deep shot to Williams down the left side but he was picked off for a career high fifth time. He went into the night with just four INTs all season, but something wasn't right for Goff who looked out of sorts all game long, but in the end he made the plays he needed to make to win the game.

as.com

The Houston Texans have struggled all year in the second half. They start hot butthen disappear after halftime and they did it again against the Lions. Stroud went to the end zone looking for Metchie who was open but he under threw it and Carlton Davis swooped through for his second INT of the game.

as.com

The Lions got back to basics before it was too late. They ran the ball with David Montgomery and they got Amon-Ra St. Brown involved and in the snap of the fingers the Lions offense started gaining momentum.

as.com

Right after the Stroud interception, Goff turned it right back over to the Texans with this ill advised pass to the end zone. Kamari Lassiter made the pick on the Hail Mary before half and made the pick less than two minutes into the third quarter.

as.com

After the halftime break Dan Campbell spoke with the sideline reporter working for NBC, and he manifested a turnover on the first play out of half. This words would ring true all night as the defense made big play after big play and the offense kept chipping away at the lead. Carlton Davis had both of the INTs on Stroud on Sunday night.

as.com

Right before the half the Lions had the ball looking to do cut into the lead before half but they went three and out and gave the ball back to the Texans with under a minute to go. Stroud drove the Texans down the field hitting John Metchie and Tank Dell to move down the field. Stroud his Metchie on 3rd and 10 and stretched the lead to 23-7 at the end of the half.

Stroud was 14/20 for 164 yards and had this TD in the first half but quieted down in the second half. He ended the night with 232 yards on 19/33 passing and threw two costly picks.

Goff was just 7/17 for 91 and three picks after throwing a Hail Mary in the end zone on the final play of the half but he would get better despite throws a few more picks in the second half.

as.com

When you see the stat line, and you see Goff had five INTs, you think he had a horrendous game. That wasn't exactly the case. He did have a few bad throws, but the first INT got tipped at the line, and this one could have been a strip sack and recovery but it was ruled an INT. The pressure from Houston's front four and blitz scheme seemed to bother Goff who was picking himself up off the ground all night.

as.com

After an interceptions and a three and out on their first two drives, the Lions finally got something going on the offensive end. Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery started to get some nice chunks on the ground and that opened up the passing game. Goff used the play action to freeze the defense and open up Sam LaPorta in the end zone for the only score of the Lions first half.

as.com

C.J. Stroud had a lot to prove after a few sluggish games, especially the one last week against the Jets. After the turnover gave Houston good field position, Stroud hit John Metchie on a 3rd and 16 play to extend the drive and then the reigning Rookie of the Year got credit for this TD "pass" to Joe Mixon.

as.com

Where in the world do we start in this game that had a little bit of everything? The Detroit Lions rattled off their seventh straight win on Sunday night in Houston but it didn't come easy on a night in which their QB struggled like we have never seen him struggle before.

Jared Goff was the most efficient, most accurate QB in the NFL coming into Sunday night's game against the Texans, but early signs of trouble showed on the first drive of the evening. Goff was picked off by Jimmy Ward after the pass got tipped at the line.

as.com

Jake Bates, who was selling bricks last year, is now kicking game winning field goals for one of, if not the, Super Bowl favorite. Between his game tying kick and his game winning kick there was about an inch and a half combined separating the ball and the post.

as.com

THE LIONS WERE DEAD AT HALFTIME BUT THE DEFENSE RESURRECTED THIS TEAM AND BROUGHT THEM BACK FROM THE DEAD. THE LIONS STAY ON TOP OF THE NFC WHILE THE TEXANS LOSE THEIR THIRD IN THE LAST FOUR.

WE ARE BACK IN HOUSTON FOR THE SECOND HALF OF ACTION.

as.com

The Lions went three and out and the Texans used a couple timeouts to make sure they got the ball back before half. With under a minute left, Stroud hit Metchie with three of his four passes on the drive including this TD pass right before the end of the second quarter.

Stroud is 14/20 for 164 yards and 1 TD while Metchie is stepping up in the absence of Nico Collins who was activated from the IR, but inactive today. Metchie has four catches for 65 yards.

as.com

Goff has been under pressure basically all night, and that's affected him more than we have seen over the last month and a half. He looks human. The Lions look average, and it's all because of what Henry To'oTo'o and the Texans defense. Goff has 91 yards on 7/17 passing and THREE interceptions.

as.com

The TD was considered a pass play, so Mixon only has 12 yards on 10 carries but he's got another 44 yards on two catches. He took this one down inside the five, but the Texans had to settle for one of their three field goals in the first half.

as.com

After a 3rd and long conversion to John Metchie, Stroud hit Mixon on a little pitch play to the left side and Mixon took it into the end zone for the games' first score.

as.com

as.com

WE ARE AT THE END OF THE FIRST HALF AND THE TEXANS HAVE BEEN DOMINATING FROM THE FIRST SNAP.

Tonight's odds

The Houston Texans are back home for a primetime showdown with the Lions, and despite being one of the top teams in the AFC, they are 3.5 point home underdogs at NRG Stadium with the Over/Under set at 49.5.

The Lions have been on a roll lately. There’s no denying that, but it’s about time the Texans showed up and showed they are ready to be considered an elite team. They are coming off of a mini BYE following their loss to the Jets on Thursday and a big night from Stroud could be exactly what they need to get back into the win column and into the conversation of NFL elites.

HOU wins 24-18.

NFL Standings

Taking a look at the standings in the AFC and the NFC we see both these teams in contention for the one seed midway through the season. The Lions are at the top of the NFC after winning seven of their first eight games. The Commanders dropped a game today against the Steelers, but the Vikings still have just two losses and so do the Eagles. The Texans are drifting behind the pack as the Chiefs continue to set the pace in the AFC with the Bills and the Steelers sitting a couple games back. Tonight the Lions will make a big statement with a win tonight on the road, but the Texans know if they lose this game, they can kiss the one seed goodbye.

Calling on Collins

The Texans, like just about every other team in the NFL, have had to deal with stars being struck down with injury. They brought in Joe Mixon and Stefon Diggs in the offseason and looked like they were going to have one of the deepest arsenal of weapons in the league. Mixon went down in Week 2 with an ankle injury, then Nico Collins suffered a hamstring injury in Week 5, and then it was Stefon Diggs who went down with a season ending knee injury. Diggs obviously won’t return, but Mixon returned a few weeks ago, and Nico Collins returned to practice this week. He is listed as questionable coming into tonight, and obviously getting the NFL’s leading WR through the first month of the season would be a huge plus for this team that needs a boost on offense.

Star watch: Texans

The revolution in Houston was led by a rookie QB who did things we had never seen by a first year starters in the NFL. Last year he passed for over 4,000 yards and 23 TDs while throwing just 5 INTs. This year, he is on pace to get back to 4,000 yards, and is right around on pace for 23 TDs, but his 4 INTs is the big difference this season. It’s a bit unfair for Stroud who was so good last year that the bar has been raised so high it’s going to be hard to live up to that. Four INTs in 9 games is still pretty damn good. Not to mention he hasn’t had a full crop of WRs since early this season. The Texans may have lost a couple game in the last few weeks, but Houston should still be considered a top team in the NFL, and Stroud is still a top QB in the league.

Star watch: Lions

Jared Goff is playing the best football of his career. He had a nearly perfect October, throwing for 10 TDs and just 13 incompletions in the entire month. He’s not in the top five in passing yards or in TDs, but it’s hard to play the position better than he has over the last five weeks. He is in the MVP conversation, but more importantly he has the Lions in prime position for the one seed after the first half to he season. Add that to the one-two punch the Lions have in the backfield and this team becomes almost impossible to slow down. Goff and the Lions are back under a dome tonight so we will see if the offense continues this incredibly efficient and explosive stretch of high scoring, high octane football.

Season recap: Texans

The Houston Texans came into the season after one of the most remarkable turnaround campaigns we had witnessed, especially considering they were led by a rookie coach and a rookie QB. After going under the radar last season, they had a bulls eye on their backs from Day 1. They haven’t looked dominant really in any of their games. They beat the Colts in Indy by two points in Week 1, then squeaked by the Bears the next week. Stroud struggled against the Vikings in one of two games the Houston lost to NFC opponents. Wins over the Jags, Bills and Patriots would get them on track but the Packers took them down in Lambeau to hand them their second loss of the season. They beat the Colts in another unconvincing performance two weeks ago, but fell to the Jets last Thursday.

Season recap: Lions

The Lions came up just short of reaching the Super Bowl last year, and came into this year as one of the favorites in the NFC. With a balanced attack on offense, a ferocious defense and a coach that has all of his players on board with the system the Lions have been one of the top teams in the league. They won their opener in a tight, overtime game against the Rams in Detroit. The Bucs surprised them in Week 2, but since then they have been the NFL’s hottest team with six wins off the rip. They squeaked by Arizona as the defense was doing the heavy lifting through the first month, but the offense has caught on since their 42-29 win over the Seahawks, and then a 47-9 win over the Cowboys and a narrow win over the then undefeated Vikings. A blow out over the Titans gave them a mini BYE before their game against the Packers and they come into to tonight playing better football than anyone in the league, including the undefeated Chiefs.

Last game: Texans

The Houston Texans went up to New York on a short week to take on a desperate Jets team that dominated them on Thursday night. C.J. Stroud had another rough night in a Texans loss, going 11/30 for 191 yards, but only led HOU into the end zone on one drive that started at the 2 yard line early in the game. The Texans led 7-0 at half, but not for the first time the offense fell asleep in the 2nd half and being held to just 6 points in the final 30 minutes. Aaron Rodgers came to life after the halftime break and threw three second half TD passes, two of those to DaVante Adams and one of those to Garrett Wilson who dragged in one of the catches of the season to polish off the Texans and drop them to 6-3.

Last game: Lions

The Lions went into Lambeau Stadium having played all of their games, even on the road, in the comfort of the dome. That wasn’t the case on Sunday in Green Bay. It was rainy, it was windy and it was nasty in their game against the Packers, but the team that had yet to play in tough weather conditions looked right at home in the slop. Jared Goff had as perfect of a game as he possibly could given the conditions. He went 18/22 for 145 yards and 1 TD that opened up the Lions scoring as he hit Amon-Ra St. Brown on a 4th and Goal play inside the 5 yard line. The play of the game was made by the Lions defense right before halftime when an injured Jordan Love made a critical error, throwing a pick six to Kirby Joseph to allow the Lions to take a 17-3 lead into halftime. Jahmyr Gibbs would add to the lead right after the break when he took a 4th and 1 for a 15 yard TD scamper to put the Lions up 24-3. The Lions would close out the game with a stop on 4th and 1 with the Packers inside the 10 yard line as Detroit rattled off their sixth straight win.

We are live from NRG Stadium

Hello everyone and welcome to Houston where the Texans have a chance to rebound after losing two of their last three and they have a chance to do so against the top team in the NFC. Houston came into the season as the dark horses to knock the Chiefs off their throne in the conference but it hasn’t been as smooth as we imagined for C.J. Stroud and DeMeco Ryans in their second year in Houston. The Lions however, have been making it look easy. They have won six straight and are not only leading their division following their win over their NFC North rivals, the Green Bay Packers, they are also at the top of the NFC having only lost one game all the way back in Week 2. Tonight the Texans can make a statement win in front of their home fans, but it’s going to take something special to slow down the Lions.
