The Cincinnati Bengals finally got their first win of the season in an ugly game from Paycor Stadium on Monday night. An injured Joe Burrow didn’t look his best, but Larry Wilson and the Bengals defense held off the Rams in the 19-16 victory.
Bengal stay calm amidst turmoil
Panic had yet to set into the minds of those in Cincinnati, but a third straight loss to start the season would have most definitely sounded the alarm bells in the Queen City. Burrow was still nursing a calf injury and it showed, especially in the first half. He was unable to escape the pocket, some his throws were off the mark, and Cincy failed to get into the end zone for the opening half hour.
The Rams however, were moving the ball with ease in the first half. They got into the Bengals five yard line twice, but settled for two field goals. Before their final possession when the game was essentially over, LA didn’t have a single third down conversion and were 0-3 from inside the redzone.
The game was tied at 6-6 after a forgettable first half of offense for both sides. On the Bengals first possession of the third quarter Burrow started to connect with Ja’Maar Chase and the rest of the offense. Chase ended the night with 141 yards on catches, but it was Joe Mixon who barreled into the endzone on a 14 yard run for the game’s first touchdown to take a 13-9 lead.
Wilson’s two picks sink LA
A couple more field goal from Evan MacPherson stretched the lead out to 19-9 thanks to Larry Wilson’s second interception of the game. The defense kept Matthew Stafford in check all night, providing him constant pressure and sacking him six times.
Los Angeles would get into the endzone with under 2:00 to in the fourth, but by that time it was too late. They couldn’t make the most of their opportunities early in the game and they dropped their second game of the season as Stafford when 18/33 for 269, one TD and two INTs.
The important thing for the Bengals is getting in the win column for the first time this season, but maybe even more importantly is Burrow, who went 26/49 for 259 yards and threw one INT, survived the game and walks into Week 4 with a win under his belt.
Wilson's second INT really turned the tides in the game. Stafford had just completed a deep pass to Jefferson right after the Bengals TD, but the tip at the line led to Stafford's second turnover of the game and Cincy would carry that momentum until the finish line.
Mixon and the Bengals finally found the end zone after a slow first half on the offensive end that even some some boos rain down in Cincy.
The Bengals got to Stafford 6 times on Monday night, and really became a problem for the LA offensive line late in the game.
Logan Wilson made the difference on the defensive end, picking off Matthew Stafford twice in the Bengals win.
The Bengals make the recovery and Cincinnati will hold on for their first win of the season!

Stafford is dropped again in the backfield this time by Wilson, but offsetting penalties will give the Rams another chance on 3rd down.

MacPherson drills his fourth field goal of the night, this time from 54 yards and the lead is up to 10.
CIN extend their advantage to 19-9 with 7:13 to go in the 4th quarter.

Stafford was underpressure and let it go to Williams who almost picked up a miraculous 1st down, but the Qb's knee was down and that will be a second straight sack and bring up 4th and forever.
Hendrickson comes off the edge and crushes Stafford again for his second sack of the night, and the Bengals 5th of the night.

CIN came up with a INT late in the second half but they couldn't turn the giveaway into points as the Bengals offense was stifled once again.
I wish there were more highlights to give, but neither team provided us with very many in the first half hour.
Nacua has been the only bright spot for either offense tonight. He's got 4 catches for 35 yards.
The Bengals never really got the offense going, and settle for 3 first half points as boos rang around Paycor Stadium at times.
The Rams got inside the 10 twice, but couldn’t punch it in to the end zone and at the moment this is far from what we expected from these two teams that were locked in a shoot out two Super Bowls ago.
Burrow is 17/31 for 144 while Stafford is 8/15 for 106 yards.

MacPherson has been the only source of offense for the Bengals tonight. He bangs home a 53 yarder to tie the game up going into the halftime break.

The Bengals come into tonight winless on the year, but that doesn't stop them from being 3 point favorites at home, and the Over/Under is set at 45.5
I'm not sure what to expect from the Bengals, but I do believe there will be points. The offense has to start clicking at some points and I think the Rams hang tight. I'm taking the over, expecting plenty of points in CIncy.
Stafford's new favorite weapon
There is a new sensation in the NFL and he goes by the name of Puka Nacua. If you haven’t seen him yet this season, get ready to be amazed. The Rookie from BYU set the NFL record for receptions by a first year receiver in the first two games of his career. He had 15 catches against the Niners which was a single game rookie WR record and his 25 catches over the last two games is the most ever by a rookie receiver to start his career. Tonight he will be getting plenty of attention from both Matthew Stafford, and the Bengals secondary. LA had a dramatic drop off at the WR position last year, and Cooper Kupp was left with little help down the field. When he comes back Nacua will have a few more games under his belt and the two undersized pass catchers will make this offense even more dangerous.
Burrow set to start
For the second straight year, Joe Burrow missed almost all of the preseason with the Bengals, and he was quick to point out that it’s tough to get the offense going when the quarterback hasn’t had time to build chemistry with his O-line, WRs and RBs. He played in Week 1, and looked terrible. He played in Week 2, and was better, but reaggravated that calf injury. The Bengals were keeping updates on Burrows close to home, but it in the moments leading up to kickoff it was announced that their QB1 will play tonight. How effective he will be remains to be seen
Ja'Maar ready for a big night?
Ja’Maar Chase said it in the preseason. He didn’t want Burrow back until he was healthy. If that meant losing a couple games, so be it, but what he didn’t want was Burrow rushing back to action and putting the rest of his season and the Bengals season in jeopardy. He has played the first two games, battling through injury and the Bengals are 0-2. Last year they started the year 0-2 after Burrow missed a large part of training camp, but ended up minutes away from a repeat trip to the Super Bowl. The Bengals have dug themselves into another hole this season, but the feeling is that there is more than enough time to right the ship in Cincy.
Stafford take the show on the road
Just how good are the Rams? That’s the question running through the minds of NFL fans around the country. They looked fantastic against the Seahawks and took the Niners to the finish line last week. Sean McVay’s team looks to be slowly recovering the edge and the explosiveness they had when they went to the Super Bowl two years ago, and they have been doing it without one of the best receivers in the league. When Cooper Kupp returns, this team could have the capability of making the Niners sweat for the NFC West title.
Bengals last week
The Bengals have started their season dropping games against two divisional opponents to start this season off on the wrong foot. The Browns handed them a Week 1 beating, but they hung with Lamar Jackson and the Bengals last Sunday. Joe Burrow was better than he was in the first game, but had a pedestrian 222 yards and two TDs while throwing a pick that allowed the Ravens to take a 10 point lead out of halftime. Burrow’s third quarter TD pass to Higgins closed the game to three, but Jackson’s 17 yard pass to Nelson Aghalor shut the door on the Bengals and sent them plummeting to the bottom of the AFC North.
Rams last week
The Rams started their season with a big road win over a division opponent that came into this season with high hopes. After their victory in Seattle, they welcomed San Francisco, and kept it close until the very end but a second half interception that wasn’t Matthew Stafford’s fault changed the game and helped the Niners sink the Rams to 1-1 on the season. The game was tied at 17-17 when the San Fran defense made the game changing play, and the Niners rattled off 10 straight points thanks to a Moody field goal and a Deebo Samuel TD run to close out LA in SoFi.
We are live from Cincy!
Hello everyone and welcome to the Queen City where the Bengals are surprisingly not in panic mode yet after losing their first two games of the season. They have been in this situation before, and still managed to make a deep run into the playoffs but concern is growing in Cincy as Burrow and the Bengals offense has yet to catch fire. The Rams have been one of the surprises of the early season despite being two years removed from winning Super Bowl LVI over this very same Bengals team.
