Los Angeles Rams 13 vs 16 Tampa Bay Buccaneers summary: stats and highlights: NFL Week 9

Tom Brady showed that he is still the best around when the game is on the line Sunday in Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers trailed the Los Angeles Rams for the entire game, but Brady led the Bucs down the field on a last-minute, game winning touchdown drive.

Must win for both teams

Sunday’s showdown in Raymond James Stadium featured the last two Super Bowl Champions, but neither team had looked like a Super Bowl contender going into Week 9. It was a matchup of two generational quarterbacks who are in the midst of their most challenging seasons of their careers.

The offensive struggles didn’t end for either team in western Florida. There were a combined 13 three and outs between the Rams and the Bucs, and each team only entered the end zone once.

The first three and out came on the opening possession when Matthew Stafford and the Rams failed to move the chains and were forced into an early punt.  The Bucs marched all the way down to the LA 3 yard line on the ensuing drive, but had to settle for a field goal to put the first points on the board.

Brady saves best for last

The Rams offense has been all too predictable, and way too one dimensional over the first half of the season. If you can stop Cooper Kupp you can stop the Rams. The Bucs defense was doing a good job stopping the short passes to Kupp in the flat, but the first time Stafford went down the field to Kupp it went for a 69 yard touchdown to give the Rams a lead which they would keep until the last 10 seconds of the game.

The Rams gained just 206 yards all game, and Kupp has 127 of those yards, but for most of the game the Rams defense was keeping the Bucs offense contained. Ryan Succop had one field goal blocked, but made three others to keep the Bucs within striking distance of Los Angeles.

Despite eight three and outs from the Rams, they still led 13-9 late in the game. The eighth and final three and out gave Tom Brady and the Bucs a breath of life with 44 seconds to go, but no timeouts. Brady completed four straight passes before Mike Evans drew a pass interference penalty to put Tampa Bay at the 1 yard line with just over 10 seconds to go. On the next play Brady hit Cade Otton for the game winning TD pass to put an end to the Bucs three game losing streak.

Brady adds to the record books

It was far from a memorable performance from Brady who completed 36 of his 58 passes for 280 yards but it was fitting that on a day in which he surpassed 100,000 career yards he also took sole place of the record for most game winning drives in a career with 55.

It took 59 minutes and 50 seconds for the Bucs to get into the endzone. It wasn't pretty for the Tampa Bay today, but Brady is known for his late game heroics and proved he is still the best in the buisness with the game on the line.

Add a few more records to the books

Tom Brady not only passed the 100,000 yard mark for his career, but also became the QB with the most game winning drive in his career, passing Peyton Manning's 54.

The offense took 59 minutes to turn on, but Vita Vea and the Bucs defense kept Tampa Bay in the game until the last possession.

Look at the play Bobby Wagner makes to jump over the line and block the Ryan Succop field goal.

Kupp was getting swallowed up on the short passes to the flat, but on the first attempt down field Stafford hit Kupp for a 69 yard TD catch and run.

He accounted for 127 of Matthew Stafford's 165 yards passing.

There weren't many, so don't get your hopes up.

Brady left it late in Tampa Bay!!! The Bucs may not have looked good today, but if you give Brady a chance at the end of the game he will punish you and the Rams found that out tonight.

Brady had Miller wide open in the endzone and Miller flat out dropped it!!!

Pass to Godwin in the flat for a gain of maybe a yard.

2nd and Goal from the 6 and we are getting close to the two minute warning.

Brady finds Otton with a skinny out route which picked up the 3rd down and 2 and more! 19 yard gain by the TE and the Bucs have 1st and Goal from the 7.

Brady back to Miller on 1st down and that goes for 7 yards.

Brady finds Miller on 2nd and 10 from a 6 yard gain, and then went back to him on 3rd down for a 9 yard pick up to move the chains.

Brady searching for Evans and Evans couldn't come up with the catch.

Brady to White out of the backfield for a 6 yard gain and that moves the chains.

The Bucs get the ball from their 41 yard line and Brady hits Miller for a short pass and that picks up 4 yards on first down.

Stafford escaped one sack, but couldn't out run Avery in the backfield and the Rams go three and out yet again.

Kupp on the jet sweep and that's sniffed out for a loss of 2 yards.

The Rams will start the drive at the 23 holding on to a four point lead with 8 minutes to go in the game.

Succop has been the only source of scoring for the Bucs today and he does it again, this time from 50 yards.

TB still trail 13-9 with 8:07 to go in the fourth quarter.

Fournette gets the pass out of the backfield and makes a move around a defender for a 16 yard gain, but that will bring up 4th and 6.

Field goal time for the Bucs with 8 minutes to go.

Brady to Otton who was right at the marker when he made the catch on the left side, but a holding call backs the Bucs up to 3rd and 20.

Brady is incomplete on 1st and 2nd down and the Bucs will have 3rd and 10 from the LA 37.

On 3rd and 3 Brady hits Godwin for 7 yards to move the chains and the Bucs are having their best drive of the second half at the perfect moment.

Brady to Evans on the right side for 7 yards and the Bucs have 2nd and 3 coming up.

Brady finds Otton on the left side for a gain of 10 yards and that moves the chains much to the delight of the fans here at Raymond James.

White gets the screen pass and that gets just a couple yards.

Stafford overthrows Jefferson on a deep ball down the right side and that Rams go three and out.

4th and 11 and the Rams will punt.

Stafford looking for Kupp on another pass in the flat, and that is read by Davis who jumped the route and dropped Kupp for a loss of 2.

The Rams take control at their 20 after no challenge flag was thrown.

Henderson gets maybe a yard on first down. 2nd and 9 from the LA 21.

Another fantastic punt from Camarda who dropped it right at the goal line, but the ref says that will be a touchback.

It may be worth another look, that was close and in a game like this one field position is a priority.

Gay hits the 35 yard field goal to put the Rams up by a touchdown with the third quarter winding down.

Brown gets two yards on the conservative run play on third down.

LA will setlle for a field goal.

Stafford is dropped by Nunez-Roches on 2nd and Goal from the 10 and that will bring up 3rd and Goal from the 19 after the nine yard sack!

For the second time today Stafford hits Kupp on a bomb down the left side line. He was wide open and picked up 34 yards to give the Rams a 1st and Goal from the 10.

Henderson starts the drive with a 3 yard run to the left.

Brady is dropped by Donald on 4th down and maybe the best defender ever gets a sack on the greatest quarterback ever.

Brady's pass to Godwin was nearly picked off by Hill and that will bring up 4th down.

The Bucs looked like they were going for it and LA decided to take a TO.

Fournette gets two yards on the run up the right side and the Bucs will have 3rd and 2 from the 45.

Brady goes play action on first down and and finds Kieft for 6 yards.

Darden with a nice punt return of 13 yards and the Bucs start their drive from their 47 yard line.

Brown up the middle for 4 yards on 3rd and very long and the Rams will punt after their 3 and out.

Stafford is dropped by Vea for a second time tonight!! This crowd is starting to get into this game for the first time tonight.

WHAT A PUNT!!!

There hasn't been much to get excited about in Tampa Bay tonight but that 74 yard punt got the crowd out of their seats.

Can't believe we are getting excited about a punt in a game with Tom Brady and Matthew Stafford.

Brady stepping up in the pocket and looks to Evans right at the marker but Evans dropped it!

This game might come down to the next team to score a touchdown. Rams lead 10-6 with 9:14 in the third quarter.

Stafford looking for Robinson, but a great play from David to break up the pass will bring the Rams kicking unit on.

Stafford, rolling, looking, and searching for Skowronek but the ball hit the dirt before he made the catch.

Kupp in the flat and he spins his way up the field for a gain of 3.

Henderson busting up the middle and breaking tackles for a 23 yard pick up to get the Rams inside the 15.

Henderson cuts back to the left on a run up the middle and pucks up 10 yards for create a 1st and 10 from the TB 44.

Stafford wiggling around the pocket and releasing to Brown who cut it up the sideilne and picked up 9 yards and the first down.

Stafford's short pass to Hopkins is incomplete on the left side and the Rams will have 3rd and 9.

Henderson picks up 2 yards on the first down run.

Stafford hitting Robinson over the middle for a 14 yard pick up on the catch and run. That's better from the Rams. They need to get other receivers involved not named Cooper Kupp.

Brady going deep down the left side to Jones and that pass is overthrown and the Bucs go 3 and out again.

The boos are starting to become deafening here in Tampa Bay who can't get anything going on the offensive end.

The run game is still being stiffled. Fournette is stopped for a loss of 1 on a first down run.

The Rams kickoff to start the second half and the Bucs will start the drive from their 25 yard line with a one point lead.

WE ARE BACK IN ACTION FROM TAMPA BAY!!

Will there be any offense in this second half of aciton? Or will this be a battle of field position for the next 30 minutes.

Look at Bobby Wagner leaping over the line and making the block to keep the Bucs off the board.

Kupp was getting denied on a lot of those short passes to the flat, but opened up the defense with a 69 yard catch and run to give the Rams the lead.

Brady went for 124 yards on 15/24 passing in the first half.

The run game needed to have an impact on today for the Bucs to have a chance, but in they have just 39 yards on 13 carries.

Matt Stafford went just 7/17 for just 98 yards, most of those came on the 69 yard TD pass to Kupp.

The run game has not got going for LA, they have 15 yards in the first 30 minutes of the game.

Stafford kneels it and will take a 1 point lead into halftime.

It was not a very entertaining 1st half. There were seven three and outs in the first 30 minute.

This time the line does it's job and Succop nails the 38 yard field goal.

TB still trail 7-6 with 24 seconds to go in the half.

Tampa take a time out on 2nd down and 5 with 36 seconds to go and Brady looking for Jones but Kendrick batted that pass away.

Stafford pressured and might have been looking to set up the screen but the pressure forced him to throw it into the dirt.

Brady under pressure and looked for the dump off to Vaughn but the pass fell well short.

White picks up 5 on the first down run, but Vaugh is dropped at the line for no gain and the boos are starting to rain down in Tampa Bay.

White again with a big chunk of 6 yards on first down and that sets up a much more manageable 2nd and 4.

The Bucs get a first down after Brady finds Evans for a 6 yard gain.

That was a much needed moving of the chains for the Bucs who had gone 15 plays with out of first down.

White is stopped for no gain and that brings up 3rd and 3 for the Bucs.

Stafford was almost picked this time, but Tryon snuck in front of Jefferson and had it slip through his hands and the Rams go 3 and out.

Stafford fakes the pitch and rolls out looking for Kupp, and was lucky not to have it intercepted.

Brady looking for Evans on the right side and the pass was caught, the only problem was Evans ran a 4 yard route of 3rd and 6.

Brady threw it into the grass and that looked like a busted play. I think Brady was looking for the screen but no one was there to recieve.

If anyone is going to pull the Rams out oft this funk, it's going to be Stafford and Kupp. They connect here for 69 yards to give the Rams the lead.

Stafford finds Henderson on another short pass, an offside on TB will give a the Rams a free five yards and they will replay 2nd down after the quarter change.

After 15 minutes it's the Bucs up by 3 in an uneventful first quarter.

Stafford on the roll out and looked for a tuck back pass to Skowronek but left it to far out infront of his intended reciever.

Stafford finds Kupp on an out route to the right side line and he picks up 7 yards right before the marker.

Akers gets the ball after a long awaited return. He hasn't played since Week 5, after a dust up with the team.

2nd and 8 after the 2 yard gain.

Brady was under pressure by Donald and forced a throw into the dirt looking for Fournette.

TB will punt for the first time today after a penalty made moving the chains much more difficult.

Brady finds Otton for a 10 yard gain. He had to fire it into double coverage, but the TD made the snag.

3rd and 5 from the 23.

Fournette gets a couple blocks and takes it for 6 yards, but a holding call will erase that play, and back the Bucs up.

2nd and 15 from the TB 13.

The Bucs take over from their 10 yard line looking for a second staight scoring drive.

Pitch to Vaughn on the right side and he breaks a tackle and gets 5 yards.

2nd and 5 from the TB 28.

Kupp is stopped after a short pass to the flat, and the Rams will punt for the second straight possession.

Stafford looking for Jefferson on first down, but that pass fell incomplete, and then the QB is sacked for a 9 yard loss by Vea!

3rd and 19 from the LA 28.

Stafford hitting Robinson for a 3 yard gain on a quick slant.

1st and 10 after that pass moves the chains.

Stafford is sacked, but Tryon jumped offside by maybe a milisecond.

3rd and 3 from the LA 32 after the flag.

Stafford hits Kupp for a short gain of two on a pass to the flat.

LA start their second drive form the 25 and Stafford found Jefferson wide open at midfield, and Jefferson just dropped it.

LA have trouble moving the ball and when they get chances they need to take advantage of them.

FIELD GOAL BUCS!

The Bucs get all the way down to the 3 yard line, but have to settle for the Succop 20 yard field goal.

It wasn't what the Bucs were looking for, but they will take the early points and the early lead.

TB leads 3-0 with 7:16 in the first quarter.

Fournette is stopped on 3rd and short and that's where you see the Bucs running game killing the offensive flow. If you can't get a push up front picking up those 3rd and short plays against Aaron Donald and the Rams.

TB using Fournette in the passing game and he gets 7 yards out of the backfield and the Bucs have 3rd and 2 from the LA 3.

Fournette gets a yard on first down, and it will be 2nd and 9 from the LA 10.

Brady to Godwin in the flat and that goes for a short gain of 2.

Fournette gets another hand off, and he's not getting much room to start the game. He picks up 2 and the Bucs have 2nd and 8 from the LA 26.

Brady finding Jones on a skinny post for a first down pick up on a gain of 19 yards.

Fournette with a run to the left side on 1st and long and gets 6 yards.

Fournette takes it up the middle for 4 yards but a holding call will bring the Bucs back 10 yards.

Evans walked off the field and is holding his rib cage, we will see if he comes back in the game after getting rattled.

Brady squeezes it between defenders to Evans who got popped, but this time secures the catch up the middle of the field for a 10 yard gain.

Evans is shaken up after the play, and he's going to need some medical attention.

Brady looking for Evans on the short pass, but the WR couldn't reel in the thrown.

3rd and 7 coming up from the TB 47.

Fournette gets the opening hand off and takes it up the middle for three yards.

Nice return on the punt from Darden who took it back 17 yards and the Bucs will start their 44.

The Rams go three and out to start the day, and that was not a good start for a team that needs to find their groove on the offensive side of the ball.

Stafford starts the game with with a drop back but the pressure forced a quick throw in the flat that hit the dirt before reaching Henderson.

According to Bet365.com, the Bucs come into tonight as three point favorite over the Rams tonight in Tampa Bay and the Over/Under is 42.5 I honestly I’m torn on this but I think that Over/Under is low for two historic quarterbacks. I’m taking the over, just because I’m hoping to see both of these offenses take off.

Can Stafford regain 2021 form?

Matthew Stafford has been a shade of the Matthew Stafford we saw lead the Rams to the Super Bowl last year. You can't place all the blame on the LA number 10 considering how bad his offensive line has been, and the lack of options outside of Cooper Kupp he has in the WR receiver.

Bucs arriving in Raymond James

You wouldn’t know it by looking at them coming into Raymond James Stadium, but the alarms have sounded on the Bucs ship, and they come in desperate for a win. Tom Brady is business as usual, but he has been far from his best form this year. They return home where they have won just once in their first three games in Tampa Bay.

While the Rams sesaon hasn't gone according to plan so far, Aaron Donald has been Arron Donald. He knows the Bucs O line has been weak this season and comes in tonight licking his chops.

Tampa Bay's mid season slump

Tampa Bays crisis got even more serious when they dropped their third straight game last Thursday night. The Bucs scored 10 points in the first quarter, but then the the offense flat lined as it so often has this season. Tampa started the game against the Ravens with an early first quarter muffed punt which foreshadowed the way the night would go for the Bucs and Tom Brady who threw for 325 yards and a touchdown. The defense that carried Todd Bowles’ side early this season was shaky again against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. They gave up 453 yards, and 231 of those were on the ground.

LA last week

The Rams may have beat the San Francisco 49ers last year in the playoffs, but the Niners have had their number in the regular season, and continued that trend last Sunday. The LA offense once again shut off as the San Fran defense dominated Matthew Stafford and the Rams. Christian McCaffery ran, threw and caught his way to a 31-14 win over their NFC West enemies and dropped the Rams to 3-4.

Hello everyone and welcome to Tampa Bay where the Bucs are looking to end a three game losing streak. The Rams haven’t been much better over the last month. They have lost three of their last four after their loss to division rivals, the San Francisco 49ers, last week. Neither team is out of their division race or playoff contention, but a loss tonight would do neither team any favors.

The last two Super Bowl Champions square off in an NFC battle of two teams who have had disappointing first halves of the season.
