Following the shoulder sustained by Jags QB Trevor Lawrence in week 9, Lawrence’s misfortune was Mac Jones’ window of opportunity as the 26-year-old made his first start for Jacksonville in the week 10 loss to Minnesota.

The Jaguars have endured a difficult start to the 2024 NFL season and that is expected to continue in Sunday’s Week 11 game against high flying Detroit Lions (kickoff at 1pm ET), in which they will again be without quarterback Trevor Lawrence with Jones, once again set to feature as quarterback.

A degree uncertainty surrounds Lawrence’s projected absence from the game after he suffered a “severe” AC joint sprain in the loss to the Eagles which could even keep him out for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.

Speaking ahead of the week 11 game against Detroit, Jags head coach Doug Pederson claimed: “I’ve got a lot of confidence (in Jones). He’s somebody that prepares extremely hard, extremely well. He’s a smart kid. You go back to even some of the preseason stuff and what he did then, as far as preparation and all that and how he played. He’s going to be fine. He’ll be excited. Home game, home crowd, home fans, his people, so to speak.”

Jones contract with the Jags

The Jacksonville native Jones moved back to Florida in the spring of 2024 signing a four-year contract worth $15,586,352 leaving the Patriots in a move that surprised the NFL world with many experts signalling the departure of Belichick at New England instrumental in the switch with the legendary coach even comparing the 26-year-old to Tom Brady.

Jones’ contract, which runs through the 2024 season, includes a base salary of $2,785,412 for this year. Despite the initial promise he showed, the Jaguars decided to decline his fifth-year option, which would have been worth $25.7 million. This decision means that Jones will become a free agent in 2025, opening up new possibilities for his career.

Lawrence’s absence with the Jags now offers Jones a perfect window to shine and bolster his chances of the Florida side keeping the quarterback on their books into the 25/26 season.
