Mahomes shines, but Chiefs collapse in close games
Just months after reaching the Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes himself are struggling and are on the verge of being eliminated.

Back in February 2025, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were chasing a historic NFL three-peat, squaring off against the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. But Vic Fangio’s defense stole the show, powering the NFC champions to a decisive 40-22 victory. Even then, Mahomes struck a defiant tone: “We’ll try again.”
Fast forward a few months, and the story has flipped. For the first time since Mahomes took over as the face of the franchise, the Chiefs are on track to lose their division. Heading into the final stretch, Kansas City sits at 6-7, with four games left—three against divisional rivals.

Mahomes still producing, but wins aren’t coming
Statistically, Mahomes has been even better than last season. In 13 games, he’s posted 3,398 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and 10 interceptions
At this point last year, he had 3,184 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 11 picks—but the Chiefs were 12-1. The difference? Execution in clutch moments.
After a costly home loss to Houston at Arrowhead, Mahomes admitted: “We have to execute at a higher level in big moments. That’s something we haven’t done this year. We’ve been close all season, but we’re running out of chances.”

Costly Decisions and Missed Opportunities
The turning point against Houston came on a risky fourth-down attempt from their own 31-yard line, setting up an easy Texans touchdown. Head coach Andy Reid owned the gamble: “I put the guys in a tough spot with those fourth-down calls. I tried to be aggressive. That’s on me. I thought we could get it. I was wrong.”
Kelce, despite strong overall numbers, has also faltered in key moments—most notably on the final interception against Houston, when he tipped the ball just enough for linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair to secure the game-sealing pick.

From clutch kings to close-game collapse
Between 2023 and 2024, Kansas City won 17 straight one-possession games. This season? They’re 1-6 in those situations, including losses to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Dallas Cowboys. On the road, they’re just 1-5.
