Mariota’s moment: Commanders turn to backup QB for crucial Week 8 clash vs Chiefs
The veteran quarterback steps in once more with Jayden Daniels sidelined and a massive test ahead in Kansas City.

The Washington Commanders are back in primetime, but it won’t be rookie sensation Jayden Daniels under center. For the third time this season, the offense belongs to Marcus Mariota, the veteran quarterback tasked with keeping Washington’s playoff hopes afloat as Daniels nurses a hamstring injury.

Marcus Mariota gets his shot again as Commanders face Chiefs on Monday night
It’s a familiar spot for Mariota, and one where he’s thrived this season. In his two starts this year, the Commanders have averaged 34 points per game, nearly 12 more than when Daniels starts. Mariota’s experience and calm demeanor have helped stabilize the offense, even if the wins haven’t come easy.
Now, the challenge gets tougher. The Kansas City Chiefs, who have won four of their last five games, are surging back toward their usual midseason form. Patrick Mahomes and company have rediscovered their rhythm, ranking top-three in scoring and yards per drive since Week 4. For Mariota, that means keeping pace with one of football’s most dangerous attacks, and doing so under the bright lights of Monday Night Football.

Marcus Mariota over 29.5 Rush yards
He’s 2/3 over this line this season. Chiefs allow the 4th most rush yards to opposing QBs. They Also allow the most QB scrambles and have a 32nd ranked QB rush grade. 3/4 rushing QBs have covered this line this season. pic.twitter.com/kSm78egPwx
Luckily, help is on the way. Both Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel are expected to return to the lineup, giving Mariota a full arsenal for the first time since stepping in. His mobility also remains a key asset. Through limited snaps, he’s rushed for 94 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries.
Still, the margin for error is small. Kansas City’s defense ranks third in scoring and continues to generate relentless pressure behind Chris Jones and George Karlaftis, who have combined for more than 30 quarterback pressures this season. If Washington’s offensive line can’t hold up, Mariota will have little time to find rhythm against a defense that rarely gives second chances.
With brutal matchups against the Seahawks and Lions coming up, this game could be pivotal. Another loss would send Washington spiraling below .500 and put even more pressure on this team that’s recently struggled to finish drives.
Mariota doesn’t have to be a hero Monday night. He just needs to be his usual steady, smart, and opportunistic self. If he can match Mahomes, Washington might just steal one on the road, and keep their season alive in the process.
