Maxx Crosby was in the Ravens’ building while they pursued Trey Hendrickson
The Baltimore Ravens’ trade for DE Maxx Crosby fell apart, but their pursuit of Trey Hendrickson while Crosby was present doesn’t sit right with some.

The wild saga involving Maxx Crosby and the Baltimore Ravens took another strange twist this week and it reveals something about how NFL front offices operate behind the scenes.
According to NFL insider Dianna Russini, Crosby and his family were already inside the Ravens’ facility while Baltimore was speaking with pass-rusher Trey Hendrickson about a potential deal.
At the time, Crosby reportedly believed he was about to become a Raven. Instead, the blockbuster trade collapsed.

How the Maxx Crosby trade quickly unraveled
The Ravens and Las Vegas Raiders had agreed to a massive trade that would send Crosby to Baltimore for two first-round picks. Crosby even traveled to Baltimore expecting the deal to be finalized after completing a physical.
But concerns tied to Crosby’s knee, which required meniscus surgery during the 2025 season, caused the Ravens to back out before the trade could become official. Within roughly a day, Baltimore pivoted and signed Hendrickson to a four-year, $112 million contract.
Trey Hendrickson’s four-year deal worth up to $120 million with the Ravens includes $60 million fully guaranteed and a $20 million signing bonus.

Russini’s reporting added an uncomfortable element to the situation. The Ravens were already exploring alternatives while Crosby was still in the building.
So how transparent should teams be with players during major transactions? Trades in the NFL are often messy, but it’s relatively unusual for a player to travel to a team facility expecting to join the organization only for the deal to collapse while negotiations with another player are already underway.
Ravens GM Eric DeCosta live on @nflnetwork speaking about the aborted Maxx Crosby trade: "Nobody's more upset about this than me. Gutted by it, actually. Big regret for me. But we will move on as a football team."

The ripple effect across the league
Baltimore’s immediate focus now is improving their pass rush. But situations like this can have longer-term consequences. Agents and players around the league pay close attention to how teams handle negotiations and failed deals. If a team gains a reputation for abruptly backing out of agreements or pivoting without warning, it can complicate future trade discussions and free-agent talks.
That doesn’t mean Baltimore did anything wrong. Teams must protect themselves when medical concerns appear during a physical. Still, the logistics are tricky. Crosby went from believing he was joining a Super Bowl contender to flying back to Las Vegas within days.
The Ravens ultimately landed a productive edge rusher in Hendrickson, while Crosby remains with the Raiders, at least for now. But the whole thing highlights the unpredictable reality of NFL roster building. Behind every blockbuster deal are dozens of moving parts: medical evaluations, contract negotiations, contingency plans and backup targets.
In this case, those parallel plans collided in a way that left one of the league’s most respected defensive stars sitting in the building while his potential replacement was already being discussed.
