Maye’s meaningless Super Bowl record to close out rough playoff run

You can only imagine it’s been a rough couple of days for Drake Maye. The second year quarterback went from a near MVP of the regular season to having one of the worst postseasons we have ever seen a quarterback have. Having said that, he did finish the Super Bowl strong, although that won’t mean much to him.

A postseason to forget

It’s true, the Pats still went to the Super Bowl, but even the most die hard New England fan would say they got a few breaks along the way. The LA Chargers had a bunch of back ups and third stringers on their offensive line, and New England beat them 16-3. CJ Stroud threw 4 first half INTs in a historic playoff collapse, in a game he was without his Pro Bowl WR Nico Collins. NE won that game 28-16. Then the Pats beat a Denver team with a back up quarterback in the AFC Championship 10-7.

I´m not trying to gang up on the Pats, or kick them while their down, but it is true that Maye had a nightmare of a postseason. He averaged 207 yards in the post season, had a completion percentage of 58.3, threw six TDs, and four interceptions and fumbled the ball eight times, losing four of those.

The numbers paint an ugly picture for a budding quarterback that is sure to have a bright future. If the Pats fans can hang on to anything, it’s the way he finished his playoff run. With the game practically out of hand, Maye continued to fight to try and get his team back into the game. He went into the fourth quarter with 60 passing yards but set a Super Bowl record, passing for 230 yards in one quarter. That’s more than any quarterback has thrown in one quarter in Super Bowl history.

Something to build on for next season

While it should erase the regular season that Maye had, the postseason is a different beast. You have to play good teams on a week to week basis, and that wasn’t really the case for the Patriots during the regular season. They had a historically easy schedule, playing just three games against teams that finished the season with a winning record, and their good fortune seemed to follow them into the playoffs.

With that said, the Pats beat who they were supposed to beat in the regular season and took care of business with what they could control. Maye passed for 4,394 yards, 31 TDs and just 8 INTs while leading the league in passer rating (113.5) and completion percentage (72%) during the regular season which is why he was second in MVP voting.

This can serve as a learning lesson for Maye, who showed in his second season he is ready to be a star in this league. Winning Super Bowls isn’t supposed to be easy. If it were everyone would have a ring. Now it’s time to brush off this rough run in the playoffs and get ready for next season.
