With their exhibition season now concluded, the Miami Dolphins must now turn their attention to the creation of a 53-man roster, but perhaps the most challenging part will be sorting out their QBs.

Weighing up Skylar Thompson and Teddy Bridgewater

The Miami Dolphins have got a bit of a problem to solve. On the one hand, they’ve got Skylar Thompson, a 7th-round draft pick in last April’s draft who has performed more than credibly across camp. Indeed, Thompson has proven that he deserves a spot on the roster, with impressive performances in all three of his preseason appearances and the highest QB rating to boot. On the other side, there is Teddy Bridgewater. While his contribution has been less prolific, it’s only fair to mention the fact that he’s had significantly less minutes to work with compared to Thompson.

Yet, when it all comes down to it, fans, players and coaches can all agree that it’s about numbers. Thompson played the entire game in week one, the second half in week two, and on Sunday night entered the game in the 2nd half and went on to register 7/10 passing for over 100 yards and three touchdowns. With that said, Bridgewater has seen his share of time in the NFL which is to say that as good as Thompson has performed so far, it’s just pre-season games. Ultimately, if the Dolphins go with Thompson, it’s highly likely they will let Bridgewater go. After all, no NFL team goes with three QBs, but maybe there is a case for doing that here and now.

The Thompson vs Bridgewater debate

As Mike McDaniel recently said, the problem he has is that he’s got a roster full of NFL worthy players, but not enough roster spots to fit them all. This of course, brings us to the crux of the matter which whether or not it makes sense to maintain a 3rd quarterback, who will likely only play in the event of emergency at the expense of a roster spot that could be given to another running back or offensive lineman, linebacker, or cornerback. The answer to that may seem straight forward, but it’s one that Dolphins fans have been debating intensely in recent days and rightly so. Consider for a moment, that as good as Thompson has been playing, he has virtually no experience in the big leagues while Thompson most definitely does.

In keeping with that, is it really a good idea to let go of Thompson? Regardless of where you stand, it’s clear that this isn’t an open and shut case. The majority of Dolphins fans seem to acknowledge that Thompson needs to be on the roster, but the bigger question here is how to keep him there. At the very least, it’s not a decision that Miami has to make here and now - they have until Tuesday to figure this out - but rest assured it’s a situation that fans will be watching closely and so will we.
