Miami Dolphins 15 vs 27 Cincinnati Bengals summary: stats and highlights, update on Tua Tagovailoa l NFL Week 4
The Cincinnati Bengals leveled their record to 2-2 with a win over the previously undefeated Miami Dolphins on Thursday night. Joe Burrow threw for 287 yards and two touchdowns in the 27-15 victory.
Burrow looked to bounce back at home
Miami came into the game looking like the best team in the league over the first three weeks, while the Bengals struggled to follow up their Super Bowl appearance in the first couple games of the season. This would be a big statement win for whoever came out of Paycor Stadium victorious.
Joe Burrow and the Bengals were eager to come out in front of their home fans and make amends for the last performance they gave at their home stadium when they turned it over five times, and lost in overtime to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
There offense had struggled in the first few games and Burrow was sacked a league high 15 time coming into Week 4, but the offensive line did a much better job protecting their gun slinger against the Dolphins.
Bengals waste no time getting into end zone
With more protection and more time to let receivers develop their routes, Burrow marched the Bengals down the field for an opening possession touchdown. The last time Burrow was in Paycor Stadium he threw four interceptions in Week 1, that would not be the case this week. Joe Mixon ran in the first touchdown of the game in to cap off a nine play drive.
Tua Tagovailoa came into the game as the conductor of one of the top offenses in the NFL. He led the Dolphins to a field goal on their opening drive, and then threw an interception looking for a long ball to Tyreek Hill at the end of the first quarter.
Miami was able to turnover the Bengals on downs on the next possession and closed to with in one point of Cincinnati before disaster struck for the Dolphins.
Tua injury update
With just under six minute to go in the second quarter, Tua Tagovailoa was sacked by Josh Tupou and landed right on his back. The Dolphins QB was already nursing a back injury from last week when he took a shot against the Buffalo Bills that left him questionable for the game on Thursday night.
The hit left him motionless on the ground and he had to get stretchered off the field as the Cincinnati crowd chanted the name “Tua” while he was being taken to the locker room. He went to the University of Cincinnati Hospital where it was reported he was conscious and did have movement in his extremities. Later in the game the television audience was updated that Tagovailoa would be discharged from the hospital and was expected to return home with the Dolphins after the game.
Cincinnati blocked the Jason Sanders 56 yard field goal shortly after Tua’s injury and that led to Burrows first touchdown pass of the night. On 3rd and 12 from inside their own territory, Burrow found Tee Higgins on a 59 yard strike to put the Bengals up 14-6 just before the Two Minute Warning.
Dolphins back up Teddy Bridgewater came into the game and looked poised under center for Miami. He started the game 6/7 and led a touchdown drive right before the halftime break to close the gap to 14-12 after Sanders missed the PAT.
Miami held to 3 second half points
Bridgewater and the Dolphins would take the momentary lead when they scored the lone three points in the third quarter thanks to a 20 yard field goal from Sanders.
Back-to-back field goals from Evan McPherson, including a 57 yarder, gave Cincy the five point lead in the middle of the fourth quarter and forced the Dolphins back up QB to try to win the game late.
Miami couldn’t take advantage of a big run from Raheem Mostert to start their last gasp drive with six minutes to go, down 19-15. They got the ball all the way down to the CIN 26 yard line, but Bridgewater was intercepted by Vonn Bell who had picked off Tagovailoa earlier in the game.
Hurst TD settles score
The Bengals would tack on the knock out punch when Burrow found Hayden Hurst on a three yard touchdown pass to seal sealing the 27-15.
Burrow took advantage of finally getting some time in the pocket by throwing for 287 yards and two touchdowns. He was sacked only once on Thursday, which is a drastic improvement from the first three games.
Bridgewater was 14/23 for 191 yards with one touchdown and one interception in a little more than one half of work. The Dolphins will now head home and wait word on the extent of Tua Tagovailoa’s injury. Miami will take on the New York Jets next week while the Bengals will head to Baltimore to take onJackson and the Ravens.

Battle of the wide receivers
This game is stacked with top receivers in the NFL on both sides of the ball. The Dolphins have two of the top three receivers in the league in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Waddle has totaled 342 yards and three touchdowns, while Hill has 317 yards and two touchdowns in the first three weeks of the season. Ja’maar Chase has yet to post a big game because the Bengals offense hasn’t quite caught fire yet, but he exploded on to the scene in his rookie year when he had 1,455 yards and 13 TDs. Burrow will need Chase to step up tonight to try to keep
Tua injured last game
In the final moments of the first half of the Bills game, Tua Tagovailoa took a shot that left him woozy as he tried to get back to his feet. He returned to the game just a play later, but it was noticeable that he was still feeling the affects of the hit by Matt Milano. Tua finished the game and despite suffering what the Dolphins called a back injury. Initial images made it seem like Tua suffered a concussion as his legs buckled and he nearly feel to the ground, and the NFL has opened an investigation to the extent of the injury and if there is a possibility that the Dolphins skipped or overlooked concussion protocol.
Burrow under pressure, O line has been shaky
Joe Burrow came into this season under the spotlight after leading the Bengals to the Super Bowl last year. His first game was wildly underwhelming as he threw four interceptions and fumbled the ball one in Bengals Week 1 loss to the Steelers. The next week he went for under 200 yards again throwing just one touchdown while getting sacked six times. The troubles on the offensive side of the ball don’t just fall on Burrow, the offensive line hasn’t done him many favors. Cincy’s QB1 has been sacked 15 times through the first three games which is tied for most in the league with the Carson Wentz of the Washington Commanders
Burrow is in the building
The Bengals return home for the first time since Week 1, looking to make amends after their overtime loss to the Steelers in the opener. Burrow threw four interceptions on that day, but will be hoping to write a different story tonight against the undefeated Dolphins.
Dolphins arriving to Paycor
The Miami Dolphins are on the road for the second time this season. Tyreek Hill and company will be hoping they come out of the gate a bit more prepared than they did in Baltimore against the Ravens when they needed a miraculous comeback for their second win of the season.
Cincinnati last week
The Bengals finally got their first win of the season, and they needed the New York Jets to come into to town to get in the win column. It has been far from a perfect start for Cincy who lost to the Steelers and the Cowboys in the opening two weeks of the season. Joe Burrow and the offense finally turned up the offense and the Bengals D kept the Jets out of the end zone all game. Burrow head 275 yards and three touchdowns in the 27-12.
Miami last week
Miami faced their toughest test of the season when the Buffalo Bills came to town last week. The preseason AFC favorites, and their star quarterback Josh Allen were contained by the Dolphins defense while Tua Tagovailoa fought through injury to lead Miaim to their third win of the season. Miami QB threw for 186 yards and a touchdown after suffering a back injury which left him wobbly in the second quarter. The Dolphins D held the Bills explosive offense to just two first half touchdowns in the 21-19 win to stay undefeated on the season.
