After a long-running contract saga in Dallas, it was confirmed that the defensive star would not be extending his deal with the Cowboys, the team he grew up supporting. Instead, Parsons shared an emotional message with fans of the Texas franchise and sent a heartfelt text to his former teammates.
Parsons opens up at first Packers press conference
We didn’t have to wait long to hear Parsons’ first words as a Packer. The 26-year-old spoke at his introductory press conference late on Friday.
Parsons described the last four months as “the hardest of my life,” admitting he never thought a trade was likely and revealing he had no say in his landing spot. “I would say I’m pretty lucky because I understand the rich history of the Packers,” he said, quickly endearing himself to his new fan base.
A historic jersey number switch and position change
He also revealed he would be switching jersey numbers, moving from No. 11 to No. 1 upon his arrival in Green Bay. Parsons will become the first Packer to wear the number since Curly Lambeau, the team’s founder, who played from 1919 to 1929 and later coached from 1920 to 1949.
According to the NFL, the Packers have initially registered Parsons as a defensive lineman, a position restricted to Nos. 50–77 and 90–99 under current jersey rules. To wear No. 1, the two-time All-Pro must instead be listed as an outside linebacker.
Parsons was able to wear No. 11 with the Cowboys because he was registered as a linebacker rather than a defensive end coming out of the 2021 draft.
