Michael Irvin's warning to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones about extending Mike McCarthy

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told reporters he’s open to the idea of extending head coach Mike McCarthy, but not everyone agrees that’s such a good idea.

Even before this NFL season began, Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy was on the hot seat after they lost their Wild Card playoff game at home to the Green Bay Packers in embarrassing fashion last season. And that was after his third straight 12-5 regular season.

The Cowboys are now at 4-7 on a disastrous season that’s included weekly talks of who might replace McCarthy when, not if, he leaves Dallas at the end of this contract year. After a five-game losing streak, however, the Cowboys pulled off a divisional win over the Commanders and apparently that’s all it took for owner Jerry Jones to stay open to the idea of extending McCarthy after this season.

Michael Irvin warns against extending Mike McCarthy

During his weekly radio show on 105.3 The Fan, Jones said that the idea of giving McCarthy a contract extension wouldn’t be “crazy”.

“I don’t think that’s crazy at all. That’s not crazy,” Jones said. “This is a Super Bowl-winning coach. Listen, Mike McCarthy is an outstanding coach. Mike McCarthy has been there, done that. He’s got great ideas. So the bottom line is in no place in my body language or anything else have you seen an indication about what we’re going to be doing relative to this staff at the end of this year. And we shouldn’t. We’ve got a lot of football left.”

Cowboys Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman spoke a few weeks ago (before the win over Commanders) and said that he thought McCarthy was a great coach that didn’t necessarily deserve to be on the hot seat after taking the Cowboys to three 12-5 seasons, despite the lack of postseason success. But his old Cowboys teammate, the legendary Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin does not feel the same.

“It would be crazy," Irvin said on FS1’s “Speak”.

“I guess what Jerry is trying to do is take some responsibility, because you can’t put it all on Mike,” he went on. “Before Dak got hurt, they were still not looking good. They were averaging 20 points per game with Dak Prescott, which was not good enough. They were 3-5. To be talking about bringing Mike McCarthy back is crazy. It’s actually ludicrous.”

Although it’s true that McCarthy cannot be blamed for the endless amount of issues in this Cowboys franchise, it’s hard to see bringing him back for another season if the Cowboys miss the playoffs completely this year, which let’s be honest...is highly probable. Then again, we know that Jones likes to talk and that we can’t always take what he says completely to heart. Let’s just see how the season shakes out.
