The Minnesota Vikings confirmed Friday that they have signed Mexican quarterback Matt Corral, The 25 years old joins as a free agent but no details were disclosed about the length of contract or how much he will earn during his time at US Bank Stadium.

Corral to cover for injured McCarthy

The Vikings were forced to scour the market to find a replacement for J.J. McCarthy, who is expected to miss the entire season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. J.J. McCarthy has been placed on Injured Reserve to make room for Corral.

While an opportunity opens for Sam Darnold, who joined back in March, Minnesota opted to bring in Corral to make sure they are fully covered. Corral entered the NFL as a third-round pick (94th overall) by the Carolina Panthers in 2022, but he has yet to appear in an NFL game.

A candidate to win the Heisman Trophy in 2021, Corral played college football at Mississippi (Ole Miss) from 2018-21, where he completed 614 of 912 passes (67.3 percent) for 8,287 yards and 57 touchdowns against 23 interceptions for an NCAA passer rating of 159.2.

He spent the 2023 offseason with the New England Patriots and later played a few games for the Birmingham Stallions in the United Football League (UFL).
