Minnesota Vikings 28 vs 34 Philadelphia Eagles summary, stats and highlights | NFL Week 2

Cousins wasn't finished, as he tried to mount a late comeback with under 2:00 to go, but this TD pass to TJ Hockinson came too late to rescue the Vikings from going 0-2 to start the season. Cousins had another monster night, going for 364 yards and four touchdowns, but for a second straight week turnovers cost them the game. 

D'Andre Swift was named the starter after Kenneth Gainwell injured his ribs in Week 1 against the Patriots. In his first game as an Eagle in his home town, he went for 175 yards on 28 carries and this TD run. 

Cousins then found KJ Osbourn who shook his defenders off of him and ended up wide open in the back of the endzone to make it a one possession game midway through the fourth quarter. 

The Vikings came roaring back from 20 points down to make it a game thanks to a couple of big plays, starting with this pass from Cousins to Jordan Addison for the 62 yard TD to give Minnesota a sliver of hope. 

The strip sack led to Jalen Hurts' second QB sneak TD of the game, and just minutes later Hurts found Devonte Smith for a 63 yard bomb! Hurts went 18/23 for 193 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT in the Eagles home debut. 

Coming out of the second half break the Eagles didn't ease the pressure on Cousins in the slightest. Josh Sweat came off the end and strip sacked the MIN QB for the Eagles fourth recovered fumble of the game. 

Jake Elliiott then punished the Vikings with a late 61 yard field goal just a coupe plays after the fumble to stretch the lead to 13-7. 

This is when you had to know it just wasn't the Vikings night. Justin Jefferson looked like he made the catch at the one yard line, but lost control of the ball and it went out of bounds in the endzone leading to a touchback with under a minute to go in the first half. 

The Eagles went back to basics, running the ball 13 times on this possession, and ending with a QB sneak from Jalen Hurts. 

Despite their inability to hold on to the ball the Vikings got into the endzone first with this 5 yard pass to Hockinson, his first of two on the night. 

The Eagles forced two first quarter fumbles but couldn't do anything on the offense end after forcing those turnovers. 

IT'S ALL OVER!!!

The Eagles move to 2-0 as the Vikings drop to 0-2 after fumbling the ball four times.

Cousins threw it as far as he can to a pile of bodies at the 20 yard line, but the pass is batted away and this game is all over!

Wilson is tackled at the 17 after a 2 yard return and the Vikings will have 7 seconds to go 83 yards. 

The Eagles run the ball a couple times and make the Vikings take their timeouts, and they should get the ball back after stopping the Eagles on third down. 

PHI will punt with 15 seconds on the clock. 

The onside kick is recovered by the Eagles and that should do it. MIN have only two timeouts and that won't be enough to get the ball back. 

Cousins floats one to Jefferson down the right side for a 20 yard gain and the Vikings are inside the 5!

Cousins over the middle to Hockinson in the endzone and the coverage was there, but again, it looked like it came a little early although the refs didn't throw a flag.

Mattison fumbled after picking up a first down on the pass play, but the Eagles were offside so the Vikings stay alive.

Cousins hits Mattison out of the backfield and he makes a couple beautiful moves around the defenders on a 16 yard scamper. That will take us to the Two Minute Warning.

Hockinson with back to back catches this time over the middle for a gain of 12 to keep the drive and the Vikes alive.

Cousins finds Hockinson over the middle and he takes it 12 yards to make 4th down managable.

Cousins looking for Mattison out of the backfield but that pass falls incomplete.

Cousins hits Chandler out of the backfield and he gets to the sideline after getting 5 yards.

Cousins found Mattison for a 9 yard pitch and catch, but a hold will bring that play back.

Cousins over the middle for Jefferson and he made a fantastic catch in traffic for a gain of 10.

Hurts finds Brown on a short out route against the zone and the 12 yard catch will keep the drive alive.

Back to Swift it goes, that the 43rd run of the game for PHI, and he gets 2 yards.

Swift gets the ball back on a handoff to the right side and he gets 3 yards on first down.

Swift picks up the first down with a 4 yard run up the gun.

PHI starts the drive from the 25 and Swift takes the 1st down run 7 yards.

Mattison gets the toss to the left side and he picks up 7 yards on first down.

Hurts is brought down for a second straight time by Hunter this time for a loss of 12. 

4th and 34 and the sacks brought the Eagles out of FG range. 

Hurts had a lot of time but ended up tucking and running but got tackled behind the line of scrimmage by Hunter.

Hurts looking for Brown again in the end zone and that pass was just a bit out in front of Brown, and on the replay you could see the DB got his hands on Brown way before the ball got there.

Hurts found Brown in the corner of the endzone for a TD, but a hold on Penny will bring that play back.

Of course the Eagles go for it, and of course Hurts picks it up with a QB sneak.

Hurts to Smith who was a step infront of the marker, and the Eagles will have 4th and 1 with a decision to make right here. 

Penny gets the run to the left side and picks up maybe a yard.

Hurts looking for Brown on the right side, but that pass is batted down on first down.

The Eagles lined as if they were going to snap it quick before the third quarter ran out and drew the Vikings offside for a first down.

Penny gets swallowed up at the line but drives the pile for a two yard gain.

Jefferson was on a crossing route over the middle but Cousins led him to far and the Vikings will punt after going 3 and out.

Roll out by Cousins and he finds Addison for a gain of 2 yards.

Mattison gets the handoff from the 30 and picks up 4 yards.

If the Vikes were going to get back into this game, they needed a play like this. Cousins hits Addison for the 63 yard TD connection and they have the ball back now looking to close it to a one possession game. 

After a false start on Swift backed the Eagles up to 3rd and 11, Hurts finds Goedert on a short pass that goes for 2 yards. 

4th and long and the Eagles will punt. 

Hurts with a short pass to the right side and he finds Swift out of the backfield for 5 yards.

Swift bounces the 2nd and short run to the left side, and gets a big chunk but a holding will bring that play back.

For the fourth time tonight, the Vikings fumble the ball! This time its Cousins getting strip sacked by Sweat and Cox picks it up and takes it into the MIN 10!

MIN get the ball form the 25 and it's Mattison getting eaten up after a gain of a yard on first down.

WE ARE BACK IN PLAY FOR THE SECOND HALF OF ACTION FROM PHILLY!

The Vikings continued to shoot themselves in the foot. This time it was Justin Jefferson who fumbled stretching for the touchdown with under a minute to go in the half. 

Hurts knows exactly what to do inside the one. After a drive full of 13 runs, it's Hurts punching it in for the 1 yard run. He's 10/13 for 84 yards with 1 INT, and has 9 rushes for 3 yards. 

The Vikings were the first ones in the endzone despite having the ball for only nine minutes in the first half. Cousins found Hockinson for the 5 yard TD. The MIN QB is 13/17 for 140 yards, but the Vikings couldn't hang on to the ball. 

The Eagles forced fumbles on back to back possessions but couldn't do anything after those turnovers.

Elliott took that field goal from Eagles territory and banged home a 61 yarder to give Philly a 13-7 lead heading into halftime!!!

Hurts up the middle for 8 yards and the Eagles will have a long attempt at a field goal from 61 yards. 

Hurts scrambles left for four yards before running out of bounds.

Mattison gave it right back to PHI on a first down run! That's two straight fumbles on back to back possessions! After a turnover fest last week, the Vikings are reliving their nightmare on the road.

Hurts looking deep down the middle for Smith and he is picked off by Jackson!!! So far the Eagles offense hasn't come up with much, just one deep pass on the opening drive.

Powell had a great return into PHI territory, but he was stripped at the end of the run and Dean jumped on it and the Eagles get the football right back.

Philly is on the board with a 24 yard FG, but much like the second half of last week, the Eagles get into good position but settle for a field goal. 

PHI are up 3-0 after the first possession of the game. 

Hurts on the QB keeper and he had three or four guys spying on the dual threat gunslinger. He got a couple yards, but the Eagles will bring out their FG unit.

Hurts looks to Brown for the first time on the WR screen in the flat and he gets a yard, maybe two.

Hurts escapes the rush, got to the sideline, turned in field and broke a tackle before the marker to get the first down on a 7 yard pick up.

Hurts tried to step up in the pocket looking to run but he was tripped up behind the line for a loss of a half of a yard.

Quick pass to Smith on the stop route to the right side and Hurts starts his night with a 7 yard completion.

The Eagles start the game receiving the ball and they will start their drive from the 25. 

Tonight's odds

The Eagles are 6 point favorites at home tonight in Philly, and the Over/Under is set at 49. 

I think the Vikings will keep it close, but I think the Eagles will turn on the offense in front of their home fans and cover the spread. 

Vikes D looking up

Minnesota might have went 13-4 last season, but it wasn’t thanks to their defense. Last season they finished 31st in yards per game allowed, giving up 388 yards a game, and 30th in ppg allowed at 25.1. Last week against the Bucs, Brian Flores’ new look defense gave up just 242 yards and 20 points in Tampa Bay. The offense isn’t likely to struggle holding on to the ball like they did in Week 1, and the normally sure handed Kirk Cousins isn’t likely to give up the ball three times every week. If the defense can hold strong like they did in the opener, the Vikes are going to be a force in the NFC.

Philly's run game takes a hit

The Eagles lost their top running back from last year, Miles Sanders and in Week 1 Kenneth Gainwell was sent to the tent after taking a shot to the ribs in the game against the Patriots. That means it will be up to D’Andre Swift and Boston Scott to carry the load tonight in Minnesota. Swift was the back up in Detroit last year and Scott got just 54 carries with the Eagles in 2022. They are thin at this position, and depending on how long Gainwell is going to be out they might have to look in to bringing someone in for to provide a little more depth in the backfield. Tonight is an open audition for both Swift and Scott if they are looking to get more of a work load this season. 

O line struggles 

There is trouble up front for Minnesota already. After Week 1, their center Garrett Bradbury is out with a back injury and their left tackle Christian Derrisaw was listed as questionable but will play after suffering an ankle injury in Week 1. Kirk Cousins fumbled twice on Sunday afternoon, one of those coming on a strip sack, and with the Vikings offense line vulnerable, the Eagles will be teeing up for a chance at the Minnesota QB.

Kirk trying to bounce back

The Vikings were the most doubted team in the league last year despite finishing the season 13-4. It’s true that they didn’t have the toughest schedule in the league, and a lot of those victories were won by seven points or less, but they still won those games. In the end the nay sayers were vindicated when they lost their first round playoff game to the New York Giants. This year they have the weapons on the offensive end, but their defense is going to be what makes or breaks them. In Week 1 the defense actually outplayed the offense and if they can play at that level every week then the Vikings will have a chance to get back to the playoffs and make a deeper run into the playoffs. 

Eagles back in their nest

Philly are the kings of the NFC coming into this season, which means they have the target on their back. Last year, the Eagles flew under the radar for much of the season despite starting the season 8-0. Now the rest of the league know what to expect, and with a revamped defense Philly might even be stronger than they were before although they are going through a change at the offensive and defensive coordinator position. Both sides of the ball still have some improving to do after their narrow Week 1 win. 

Vikings last week 

It seems hard to believe that Kirk Cousins passed for 344 yards and two touchdowns, and Justin Jefferson had 150 yards receiving and the Bucs lost, putting up only 17 points. Kirk Cousin’s red zone interception right before the halftime break seemed to deflate the Vikes but they did come back out in the third quarter and score an opening drive TD in the second half thanks to an Alexander Mattison five yard TD that tied up the game at 17, but it was the Bucs who had the last laugh when Chase McLaughlin hit a 57 yard FG with five minutes to go to take the lead and keep the lead. 

Eagles last week 

The first quarter couldn’t have been any better for the Eagles last week in New England. After two offensive possessions they were up 16-0 thanks to an opening drive field goal, and Darius Slay Jr. pick six, and fumble and a DeVonte Smith 5 yard TD catch. After that the offense flat lined and the defense gave up a quick two TDs in the second half to let the Pats back in the game. Three field goal in the second half stretch the lead out to nine, but New England scored a touchdown with 3:37 to go in the game to cut the lead down to 5, and then had a chance to win it on the final drive of the game, but Kayshon Boutte couldn’t get his second foot down on a fourth down pass and the Eagles survived a scare in Foxborough.

Hello everyone and welcome to Philly where the Vikings hit the road looking to erase the taste of an ugly opening week loss against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Philadelphia Eagles looked far from their NFC Champion selves in the final three quarters from Foxborough last week, but they snuck out of New England with a win. Tonight both teams are going to try to bounce back from sub par Week 1 games. The Eagles will either walk out of tonight still undefeated or the Vikings will get back on track with their first win of the season.
