The Philadelphia Eagles beat the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card round of the 2024 NFL NFC playoffs.

Unfortunately, they will have to continue their journey to Super Bowl LIX without one of their top defenders.

What was the nature of Nakobe Dean’s injury?

Linebacker Nakobe Dean suffered a torn patellar tendon in his left knee during the game against the Packers, and head coach Nick Sirianni confirmed that he will miss the rest of the playoffs.

Nakobe had a great year. You’ve seen the reports, he’s going to be out and we’re going to miss his big plays, like he’s done all season,” Sirianni said. “He identifies plays so quickly and that’s because of the amount of time he puts into working on his game.

Dean, a third-round pick in the 2022 draft, started all 15 regular-season games he played in 2024. The University of Georgia graduate and former Bulldog was the team’s second-leading tackler with 128 tackles. He also had three sacks, four pass deflections, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, and one interception.

Who will replace Nakobe Dean in the Eagles' defense?

The Eagles run a 3-4 defense with two inside linebackers, and one of them was Dean. The other starting linebacker is Zack Baun, so the responsibility of replacing the injured linebacker may fall on the shoulders of rookie Jeremiah Trotter Jr., who has 25 tackles and 0.5 sacks in the regular season.

Another alternative to replace Dean is Oren Burks, a veteran who is in his seventh season as an NFL player. Burks shined, recording 41 tackles and two forced fumbles. Finally, Bryce Huff and Jalyx Hunt could take some snaps to give Trotter, Baun and Burks some rest.
