New York Giants 20 vs 12 Washington Commanders summary: stats and highlights | Week 15
The New York Giants snapped a month long winless skid on Sunday Night with a crucial division victory over the Washington Commanders. The Giants defense stole the show as they held Washington’s offense in check in their 20-12 win from FedEx Field.
NY and WAS rematch two weeks later
It was a game that was loaded with playoff implications as two teams in Wild Card position looked to better their postseason chances with a Week 15 win. New York and Washington had played just two weeks before their primetime showdown and settled for a tie in the Meadowlands.
This game was just as tight, as both teams traded blows all four quarters. The Giants defense kept Taylor Heinicke and the Commanders offense quiet for much of the first half, giving up just a field goal on Washington’s second drive of the game. Kayvon Thibodeaux disrupted offense all night, and the defensive end had the game changing play early in the second quarter when he strip sacked Heinicke and scooped the fumble up and ran it into the end zone for the game’s first touchdown.
The Giants’ offense didn’t look great to start the game, but Daniel Jones would lead an 18 play, 97 yard TD drive at the end of the first half which put New York up 14-3 with Saquon Barkley’s three yard touchdown run just before the halftime break.
Washington scoreless on two trip inside 10
Washington came out of halftime looking like a different team in the first possession of the third quarter. Heinicke and the offense had six plays that went for 10 yards or more and the Commander QB hit Jahan Dotson on a 19 yard TD pass to bring the score to 14-9 after a missed PAT that was pushed back due to a penalty on the two point conversion.
After exchanging field goals to bring the score to 17-12, the Commanders had a chance to take the lead midway through the fourth quarter. From their own 9 yards line, Heinicke started the drive from with a deep shot to Dotson for a 61 yard gain and a long run from Robinson would put Washington in the red zone. On 3rd and 4 inside the 10 yard line, Dexter Lawrence strip sacked Heinicke and recovered the fumble to keep the Commanders trailing by five.
New York would kick a field goal on the next possession to extend their lead, but Washington had a chance to tie the game up with just under two minutes to go. The Commanders would once again drive inside the 10 yard line, but on 4th and Goal from the 6 yard line Heinicke’s pass was batted down by Darnay Holmes and the Giants held on for the win.
The Commanders first loss in over a month doesn’t knock them out of Wild Card position, and the Giants first win in over a month doesn’t guarantee them a playoff spot, but it does distance them from Washington and the rest of the pack going after the seventh seed in the NFC.
The Commanders got inside the 10 twice in the fourth quarter but came couldn't score on either of those drives, fumbling once and then Heinicke's pass to Samuel was broken up by Holmes to give the Giants their first win since mid November.
The Commanders came out of the halftime break and the offense ignited. They had 6 plays of 10 yards or more and Taylor Heinicke capped the drive off with this 19 yard strike to Jahan Dotson.
The Giants' offense really didn't get anything going until their last drive of the first half, when they went 97 yards in 18 plays and Saquon Barkley punched in the TD from three yards out.
The Washington defensive line was supposed to be the unit that dictated this game, but Kayvon Thibodeaux came up with the strip sack, the scoop and the score for the game's first touchdown.

The Giants improve to 8-5-1 and they take one big step towards the post season with the divion win on the road!

Heinicke was almost sacked by Ojulari and he had to let it go to avoid the sack.

Jones with a pass to Slayton on the left side and he is wrapped up for a loss of a yard and that will bring us to the Two Minute Warning.

ON second down Barkley takes it up the middle for 3 yards and WAS take another TO with 2:15 to go.
3rd and 6 coming up from the 31.
Barkley to the left side and he gets a yard. WAS take a TO anwith 2:21 to go.

JOnes tucks and runs for a gain of 7 yards and that moves the chains and he slid in bounds to keep the clock running.

Barkley up the middle this time for a short gain of 3 yards.

It's Barkley again up the middle and he gets 14 yards this time on first down!

After review, the Giants are rewarded the ball at the 14 yard line after the fumble.
Barkley busts up the middle for big gain of 12 on the 1st down run.

Heinicke is dropped on 3rd down by Lawrence and the ball may have come out at the end of the play, The Giants will challenge the ruling on the field.
Heinicke finds McLaurin on the comeback route for 5 yards.

Robinson pops the run out to the left side and he turns up the field for a gain of 19 yards.

The Commanders take over from the 9 yards line with 9:06 to go in the fourth quarter. This game has been tight all night long and it most likely has a few surprises still in store.
JOnes' pass to Barkley was almost intercepted by Forrest and falls incomplete.

JOnes had his first down pass batted down at the line and then took the second down run up the middle for 2 yards.

Jones didn't have many options on the first down pass and he threw it out.

The Commanders drive comes to a halt, but Slye comes on and drills the 51 yard field goal to chip into the lead.
New York still lead 17-12 with 12:31 to go in the fourth.
Pinnock came on the blitz and Heinicke got crushed as he released the ball.
4th down and 9 from the NY 33 and the Commanders will kick the field goal.
Gibson lost the football after picking up a short gain of 1 and was lucky to have it bounce right back at him.

Milne got crushed on the return and the ball came loose, but his knee was down and the Commanders take over from their 42 yard line.

Jones had Bellinger over the middle but Bellinger couldn't reel in the catch and the Giants go three and out and will punt.

Jones rooling right and looked for Barkley up the sidleine but the pass was thrown into the dirt.

The Giants are pinned back to the 1 after a 65 yard punt from Way with 1:26 left in the third quarter.

The Commanders try a flea flicker and Heinicke goes deep down the middle looking for Brown but that was over thrown by a yard.

The Jones run set up a 50 yard field goal that Gano nails to put the Giants up by 8.

Jones tucks and runs and doesn't move the chains on his 10 yard run, but that does move the Commanders into field goal range.

ON 2nd and long Jones finds Slayton for a gain of 4 and the Giants have 3rd and 15 coming up from the WAS 42.
Breida was stuffed after a gain of 1 on first down, and then a holding penalty against NY backs the Giants up to 2nd and 19.
Barkley gets the handoff and moves the pile with a powerful run up the middle for 6 yards and a first down.

Jones tucked and ran with it down the left side and got a big gain, but the ball popped out and the Commanders recovered! After review the refs rule Jones was down so the gain of 9 will give the Giants 2nd and 1.

After a terrible first half on the offensive side of the ball, the Commanders march down the field and get their first TD of the night with a deep hook up to Dotson.

Brilliant drive from the Commanders and on the 6th play of 10 yards or more is capped off by Heinicke's deep strike to Dotson over the middle for a 19 yard TD!!!
The Commanders went for two after the TD, but a pass interference on the offense forced a long PAT and Slye missed it! NY leads 14-9 with 8:38 to go in the third quarter.

After 18 plays, and 97 yards, it's Barkley running it into the end zone to extend the lead.
Thibodeaux had a monster first half and got the strip sack on Heinicke, and scooped and scored.
The Commanders got their early field goal, but since then nothing has been working for Heinicke and Washington.
Heinicke has 55 yards on 7/13 passing while Robinson has 8 carries for 54 yards.
The Giants offense didn't look great before their long TD drive they constructed at the end of the first half, but the 97 yard play certainly helped pad their stats.
They have 128 total yards, but their strip sack for a fumble is what is making the differnce through 30 minutes.
Jones is 12/16 for 104 yards and Barkley has been held in check. He has 7 carries for 13 yards.
The Giants get the ball back at the 25 and take a knee. That will take us to the halftime break as NY head into the locker room up 14-3.

Tonight's odds
According to Bet365.com the Commanders come into tonight as 4 points favorites with the Over/Under set at 40.5.
I'm going with the Giants getting the points. We have already seen how little seperates these two teams, and I think 4 points is a lot to give in a divisional match with so much on the line.
NFC East
We could be witnessing history this season. As it stands now all four teams in the NFC East would be in the playoffs, with the Eagles leading the conference with just one loss, the Cowboys at four losses after their defeat to the Jags today, and both NY and Washington at 7-5-1. No one really thought much of this division coming into the season, but it looks like we could be heading into the playoffs with four teams from the NFC East.
NFC Standings
Coming into this week at 7-5-1, the Giants and Commanders were holding on to the final Wild Card spots in the NFC. No matter what happens tonight, they will still be the sixth and seventh seed in the NFC, but the Seahawks and the Lions are lurking a 7-7 each, while the Packers still have a shot a 5-8, needing a win on Monday Night against the Rams.

Can Giants stop the slide?
New York come into FedEx Field on a downward spiral that could cost them their place in the post season and this man right here has been catching much of the blame for Giants recent struggles. Everyone knows the Giants offense revolves around Saquon Barkley, but Daniel Jones is going to have to step up tonight if New York are going to snap this losing streak.
McLaurin keeping cool
Washington comes back to FedEx Field well rested and refreshed and looking to take another step towards the playoffs with a win tonight. Scary Terry McLauring knows how big this game is tonight, but he’s got a stoic poker face coming into the stadium in Washington.
New York needs a rebound
The Giants haven’t won a game since mid November when they barley brushed by the Houston Texans. Since then they have tied the Commanders and lost three, including last week’s blowout defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles. Philly ran all over the Giants, totaling 253 yards on the ground, and four TDs while Jalen Hurts went for another two TDs through the air. The Giants got a late touchdown to make the score a bit more respectable, but the game was over by half-time.
Washington last week
The Commanders are coming off their Week 14 bye after tying the New York Giants the week before. A tie didn’t do anyone any huge favors, but anytime you go into a division rival’s house and come out of the game without a loss, you should be happy. Now they have a chance to take the tie breaker away from the Giants at home tonight in front of their home fans, and with the way the Commanders have been playing you wouldn’t bet against them.
