New York Jets release place blame for Week 1 loss, release player responsible

The New York Jets and the Pittsburgh Steelers served up one of the best games of the NFL’s opening weekend, but one mistake separated the two sides.

Update:

There is no crying in baseball, and there is apparently no forgiveness in football. At least that’s the new policy in the Meadowlands with New York Jets first year head coach Aaron Glenn who released Xavier Gipson after a big mistake late in the 4th quarter of their Week 1 loss.

No margin for error in Meadowlands

There is nothing subtile about what the Jets did on Wednesday morning. Just days after New York lost a tight game that went down to the wire from MetLife Stadium their wide receiver and kick returner Xavier Gipson was released following a fumble that may or may not have cost the Jets the game.

After seeing the Jets pull the trigger on Gipson, it feels like they are pointing the finger at the former Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack. New York led 26-17 heading into the fourth quarter. Former Jets QB Aaron Rodgers hit Jaylen Warren on a TD pass to cut the lead to two and on the very next play, Gipson fumbled the kickoff giving the ball back to the Steelers on the NY 22.

It took just two plays for the Steelers to find the end zone and take the lead after the critical turnover. Rodgers connected with Calvin Austin with 18 yard pass to give Pittsburgh a 31-26 lead.

From hero to zero in a couple years

The game went down to the wire it took a Chris Boswell 60 yard field goal to topple the new look Jets in a high flying, high scoring game from Metlife. It was a crisp, clean game that only featured one turnover and that turnover cost the Jets the game and Gipson his job.

Gipson was picked up by the Jets in 2023 after going undrafted out of college. His most famous moment in Jets colors came in his debut when he took an overtime punt to the house to seal the Jets Week 1 match up against the Bills. That was the same game that Aaron Rodgers tore his achilles to start his era in the Big Apple.

On Sunday Rodgers began his new chapter in Pittsburgh and not only beat his old team, he took a swipe at all of those who thought he was washed up. “I was happy,” Rodgers said, “to beat everybody associated with the Jets.”
