NFC defensive coach praises Lions QB Jared Goff: “He’s developed into one of the game’s pure passers”
When Jared Goff joined the Detroit Lions, he went from a struggling quarterback to one of the best in the league.
Quarterback Jared Goff is entering his fifth year with the Detroit Lions. In his time there, he’s gone from a struggling quarterback to one of the NFL’s best. In fact, over the past three seasons, only Patrick Mahomes has more passing yards and touchdowns than Goff.
In 2024, Goff threw for 37 touchdowns and just 12 interceptions, earning him the No. 8 spot in ESPN’s annual QB rankings, voted on by coaches, executives, and scouts - up from No. 9 last year.
Anonymous coach heaps praise on Goff
Analysts credit his evolution to improved poise under pressure, better footwork, and strong coaching in Detroit. He led the NFL in yards and touchdowns off play-action and ranked second in passer rating and yards per attempt.
“He’s developed into one of the game’s best pure passers,” said an anonymous veteran defensive coach in the NFC. “He doesn’t turn the ball over like he used to. He’s a reliable quarterback with a real arm. He’s not just a dropback passer who makes s*** happen. He’s become more than that.”
The next challenge: maintaining his elite play without top offensive coordinator Ben Johnson or Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow.
The Lions rookies reported to the start of training camp today (Wednesday, July 16). Goff and the other veterans will join them on Saturday, July 19. Their first regular-season game will be on Sunday, September 7 against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.
