The University of Tulsa left tackle Tyler Smith was selected 24th overall by the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night.

This is the second year Tulsa has produced a first round NFL draft pick following last year’s Zaven Collins who was selected by the Cardinals.

The Texas native who’s 6′6″ and 322-pounds played 25 games with 23 starts at Tulsa. Smith only missed one game last year and was named second-team all-AAC his redshirt sophomore season.

The year before as a redshirt freshman, Smith was a first-team All-AAC selection named Freshman All-American by the FWAA.

Smith: “Attacking mentality”

Smith’s physical skills in comparison to how big he is is a great addition to his tenacity. He moves quickly and is willing to attack relentlessly. “I want to be nasty and physical, and I want to dominate,” he said.

As several scouting reports mentioned his violent style, Smith himself wants to show “that attacking style, that attacking mentality, that relentless pursuit.”

Youngest offensive lineman in the NFL draft

While the Cowboys know taking Smith means taking on a project, Dallas is confident that with their coaching staff, this project can be successful.

Smith, who just turned 21 this month, might be the youngest selected offensive lineman in the NFL draft.
