NFL MVP odds: Who are the favorites to win after week 15?

Quarterbacks continue to dominate the spotlight and show no signs of relinquishing their hold, as evidenced by this Most Valuable Player award season’s odds

Update:
Brock Purdy #13 of the San Francisco 49ers, leaves the field.

The NFL’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award is among the highest honors players can receive. Since Adrian Peterson’s remarkable win in 2012, quarterbacks have become the most likely contenders for this award. As the season approaches Week 16, the trend of quarterbacks dominating the MVP race continues. The top five MVP contenders are all quarterbacks, putting up impressive numbers throughout the season.

Despite the dominance of quarterbacks in the MVP race, other players are still making a significant impact on the field. However, the quarterback position is undoubtedly the key to success in the modern NFL, which is reflected in the MVP race.

Brock Purdy - 49ers

The first quarterback discussed in the MVP conversation is Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers. Especially after the win against the Cardinals, he has the best odds at -175 and 63.6% chance to win NFL MVP this season. Some may be surprised by Purdy’s unexpected standing, but if we look closely at his performance, we can see that he excels in completion percentage, ranks fourth in passing touchdowns, and secures the seventh spot in passing yards. Despite these impressive stats, Purdy faces criticism for not being the linchpin of his team’s offense. Many pundits point to the considerable offensive talent surrounding him, like the running back Christian McCaffrey, who has a strong case for the MVP title himself, and the strategic genius of coach Kyle Shanahan.

Dak Prescott - Cowboys

Dak Prescott is still a formidable contender; despite the tough loss to the Bills, he’s still in the game and has decent chances for the MVP race with +450 odds. Despite a roller-coaster season, marked by a challenging loss to the Eagles in Week 9, Prescott and the Cowboys have rebounded with four consecutive dominant wins. However, their upcoming matchups against formidable opponents like the Dolphins, Lions, and not-so-strong Commanders will be crucial in determining Prescott’s MVP aspirations.

Lamar Jackson - Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 23-7 in Week 15. Although Lamar Jackson has been playing well, he has not performed as impressively as last year. He has thrown only 17 touchdowns this season, ranking 17th in the NFL. He has also been running the ball less, which is good for his longevity as an NFL quarterback, but it has hurt his MVP odds, standing now at +500. The Ravens will be facing the San Francisco 49ers this weekend, and a win for Jackson could boost his MVP chances. The 49ers are currently favored to win by 4.5 points.

Jalen Hurts

Jalen Hurts, the quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, for the win of the Most Valuable Player award sits at +1000 odds. Although the Eagles may not have the most impressive offensive abilities, they still rank highly in points per game, points per play, and touchdowns per game. With several favorable matchups soon against teams like the New York Giants and Arizona Cardinals, Hurts has the chance to make a significant push for the MVP award.

Christian McCaffrey 49ers

Christian McCaffrey had a remarkable game against the Arizona Cardinals this week by scoring three touchdowns and has +1200 odds in the MVP race. He has scored 24 touchdowns this season, which is truly impressive. For a running back to win the MVP award, he must break some record or at least come close to breaking it, like the record of Adrian Peterson, who almost broke the rushing yards record of LaDainian Tomlinson in 2012. Unfortunately, McCaffrey is unlikely to come close to any of these records. Although he has performed exceptionally well, he may not win the award if his team’s quarterback remains in the MVP conversation.
