Update:

Just days before his 38th birthday, Matthew Stafford has been named NFL Most Valuable Player for the first time. The Los Angeles Rams quarterback had an incredible personal season, even though the Rams were beaten by the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game.

At the age of 37 Stafford becomes the oldest player to win the NFL MVP award for the first time. In the league’s entire history only Tom Brady (2017) and Aaron Rodgers (2021) have won the award at an older age.

Speaking on stage while accepting the award, Stafford paid tribute to his wife and daughters, saying: “You’re unbelievable cheerleaders for me. I appreciate it. I am so happy to have you at the games on the sideline with me, and I can’t wait for you to cheer me on next year when we’re out there kicking ass.”

How many votes did Matthew Stafford get?

For much of the season Stafford and Drake Maye had been neck-and-neck in the race to win a first MVP. The two leading candidates both guided their teams into the offseason impressively but Stafford emerged as a slight favorite at the end of the regular season.

Nevertheless, his eventual margin of victory over Maye could not have been any closer. Of the 50 first-place votes, Stafford received 24 and Maye got 23. Behind them, Josh Allen got two votes and Justin Herbert got one, although Herbert did not finish in the top five once all votes had been counted.

The one-vote margin between Stafford and Maye is a historically tight victory, the narrowest since Peyton Manning and Steve McNair were the joint-winners of the award in 2003.

But despite Stafford’s victory at Thursday’s NFL Honors ceremony, it is Maye who will be leading his team into Sunday’s Super Bowl LX. Maye has the chance to become the first non-Tom Brady quarterback to win a championship with the Patriots. For Stafford, the attention will soon switch to the 2026 season. He ended his remarks on Thursday by saying: “I’ll see you guys next year... Hopefully I’m not at this event and we’re getting ready for another game at SoFi [Stadium, next year’s Super Bowl venue].”
