Update:

Flag football is not tackle football, and even the NFL’s biggest names aren’t guaranteed to dominate. That was proven on Saturday during the inaugural Flag Football Classic in Los Angeles.

A roster filled with current and former NFL stars, led by Tom Brady and including Jalen Hurts and Rob Gronkowski, was outplayed and outpaced by the USA Flag Football National Team.

Team USA controlled the event from start to finish, cruising through round-robin play before defeating a team led by Joe Burrow in the final.

NFL stars humbled in Flag Football Classic

On paper, the matchup seemed lopsided in the opposite direction. NFL MVP candidates, Super Bowl champions and some of the most recognizable names in football were expected to have the advantage. Instead, they quickly found themselves struggling to keep up.

The reason became obvious almost immediately. Flag football rewards quickness, spacing and precision in ways that differ sharply from the physicality and structure of the NFL game. Team USA, made up of experienced flag football players, showed a level of comfort and chemistry that the NFL stars couldn’t replicate on short notice. Even basic parts of the game like pulling flags proved to be an adjustment.

“In terms of strategy, we’re probably way behind,” Brady admitted after the game, acknowledging the gap between the two styles of play.

Where NFL players rely on size and contact, Team USA leaned into speed and agility. Led by quarterback Darrell Doucette, the U.S. team consistently created separation on offense and capitalized on defensive mismatches. The smaller field and faster pace only amplified those advantages.

The result was a showcase of a sport that is familiar on the surface but operates very differently in practice. Team USA head coach Jorge Cascudo summed it up best, noting that his players’ familiarity with the game made the difference, at least for now.

A lesson ahead of the Olympics

The timing of the event made the outcome even more significant. Flag football is set to debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics, and NFL players are expected to be eligible to compete for roster spots. Saturday’s showcase was seen as an early preview of what that competition could look like. If anything, it raised more questions than answers.

The assumption that NFL talent would automatically translate to Olympic success took a hit. Instead, the performance from Team USA highlighted the value of experience within the sport itself.

Brady, however, made it clear that the story is far from finished.

“There’s going to be a selection process and the best people will play,” he said. “Team sports are a meritocracy.”

Against some of the biggest names in football though, Team USA proved that flag football has its own hierarchy, its own stars and its own skill set. And at least on this stage, the NFL’s best were playing catch-up.
