Jayden Daniels is the name on everyone’s lips; the rookie sensation has been sensational on his short journey that has seen him guide the Washington Commanders to new heights, beating the Detroit Lions in the NFC divisional playoff.

The 24-year-old, before storming into the NFL and taking over the league as the new poster boy, cut his teeth at both Arizona State and LSU, with a stint at the former seeing him cross paths with Nick Saban.

When Daniels came up against Alabama Saban, an esteemed name in College Football, was the head coach as his team were stunned. Unfazed by the occasion of playing a team led by a legend, Daniels passed for 182 yards while making two touchdowns. He also scored an overtime touchdown to set up what turned out to be the game-winning two-point conversion.

Daniels ‘the most dominating player that we played against’

“Since Joe Burrow, which whatever year that was when they beat us, this was the most dominating player that we played against at Alabama for four or five years," Saban admitted during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show.

“I said it last year in the draft. All these pro people call and ask your opinion on people you played against. I said this guy is the best player we played against for five years.”

A year on Daniels was the star again, passing for 219 yards, getting two touchdowns and an interception in a sublime performance.

“No disrespect to anybody else,” Saban said of the 2024 draft class after having played against Daniels twice in two years. “You guys gotta look at all the quarterbacks. But I think this guy is a great passer. He’s fast as hell. And he can scramble and run and make plays. He’s smart. He makes good decisions.

“I don’t see how you can go wrong with this guy. I actually thought he was the best guy in the draft last year because of the production that he had in college. And he did it for two years.”
