For well over ten years now, the NFL have staged regular season games overseas with London initially selected as the host city for match-ups which proved to be a massive hit with football fans, not just in the English capital but also tapping into European based NFL fans who made the regular pilgrimage to London.

The series has expanded over time with games having been staged at three different London venues (Wembley Stadium, Twickenham Stadium and more recently at the newly revamped Tottenham Hotspur Stadium). Mexico City and Germany’s Munich and Frankfurt have also staged gridiron NFL contests.

2024 NFL International Series

For the 2024 season, the NFL confirmed that the International Games would return to London and Munich and for the first time in the sport’s history an NFL game will be staged in the Brazilian city of São Paulo, as part of the league’s global expansion programme.

The Green Bay Packers take on the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday (6 September) during Week 1 of the regular season with the game overshadowed by the colour ‘green’.

The stadium where the Eagles and Packers are playing home to the Brazilian soccer team Corinthians and arch city rivals, Palmeiras, wear the color green. The rivalry is so intense and Corinthians fans so loyal, that there is an informal ban on wearing the color green.

The Eagles recently announced that they’ll be debuting a brand new uniform, which just so happens to be black and white, the colours of ‘Timão’ (Corinthians) with the Packers set to sport green and gold, colors which incidentally also feature in the Brazilian national flag.

London treble

NFL games returns to Europe next month with Minnesota Vikings set to play the New York Jets at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 6 October with the Chicago Bears play the Jacksonville Jaguars also at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium a week later

On Sunday, 20 October, the action returns to North London as Jaguars take on the New England Patriots at the iconic Wembley Stadium.

The curtain comes down on the 2024 International Series in Germany as the Carolina Panthers will play the New York Giants in Munich at Allianz Arena on Sunday, 10 November.

NFL to explore new markets

Earlier in 2024, the NFL announced that the Spanish capital of Madrid would be the next European city to host a regular season game with Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu set to be the venue.

The iconic stadium has recently been redeveloped and can now host mega-events ranging from concerts through to boxing contests with the club anxious to ensure that the stadium generates incremental revenue.

At the time, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell also hinted that Australia and Irish capital Dublin are also potential new candidates for hosting NFL games from 2026 and beyond.
