Packers 31 vs 34 Lions summary, stats, scores and highlight | NFL Week 14

Jake Bates kicked the game winning field goal as time expired to keep the Detroit Lions at the top of the NFC and extend their win steak to 11 games.

Jake Bates missed his first field goal of the season last week against the Bears, but having a kick to win the game at home on a huge Thursday night game, you had to know this was going good. He has been near perfect and so have the Lions.

It wasn't easy, but it wasn't supposed to be. The Lions needed this win to keep their cushion on the rest of the pack in the NFC, and they got it despite coming into the night with a decimated defense.

Detroit keep their one game lead over the Vikings and the Eagles while stretching their win streak out to 11 while the Packers drop to 9-4 and will probably forfeit their one seed ambitions after their second loss to the LIons.

as.com

The Lions had a 4th and 1 in which they could have kicked the field goal and taken the lead with under a minute left, but that isn't Dan Campbell's style. He went for it like he did four other times during the night, and got it with a David Montgomery run that probably didn't turn out how they drew it up on the practice field. The Lions ended the night 4/5 on 4th downs. Two of those turned into TDs and this one won the game for Detroit.

as.com

Love and the Packers would get all the way inside the 10 with a chance to take the lead, but a holding penalty brought Green Bay back to 2nd and goal from outside the 15 and GB had to settle for a field goal to tie the game up with 3:38 to go.

as.com

Goff and the offense knew that if they were going to win this tough divisional, Thursday night game it was going to come down to how many points they could score. With a banged up defense, they set the tone early and never really took their foot off the gas. After losing the lead, the Lions cooked up another 10 play drive that Tim Patrick polished off with his 2nd TD catch as a Lion and of the night.

as.com

The Lions, who have a tendency to go for it on 4th down, stayed true to their colors and took a risk on 4th and 1 from their own 31 with 1:30 to go in the 3rd quarter. Green Bay's defense came up with another big play stopping Jahmyr Gibbs and that would set up Josh Jacobs' third TD run of the game as the Packers took the lead again.

as.com

The Lions didn't flinch even after the Goff interception and the two Packers TDs in a matter of minutes. Goff led his side down the field with another long, 11 play drive that was capped off by Tim Patrick's first catch as a Detroit Lion. He wouldn't have to wait too long for his second.

as.com

It didn't take GB long to take advantage of the take away. Just three plays later it was Josh Jacobs running it into the end zone for a second time to give the Packers a 21-17 lead. It was a tale of two halves in Detroit. The first half was fun, the second half was back and forth, end to end action for 30 minutes.

as.com

On the next possession it was the Packers defense that came up with the play that looked like it was going to turn the tables on Thursday night. Keishon Nixon jumped right in front oft his Jared Goff pass and picked him off to put Green Bay in position to take their first lead of the night.

as.com

After throwing for just 37 yards in the first half, Jordan Love came out and hit Watson with a 59 yard bomb on the first series of the 3rd quater and then found Tucker Kraft for the 12 yard TD catch to get the Packers right back in the mix. Love would flip a switch in the second half and ended the night with 206 yards on 12/20 passing, but his slow start put the Packers behind the 8 ball.

as.com

The Lions had the Kerby Joseph pick six right before the halftime break in the first match up between these two teams. That shifted the momentum in that game in favor of the Lion the rest of the way, but this Jahmyr Gibbs TD which put them up 10 right before the break didn't do much for the Lions momentum going into the 2nd half.

as.com

The Packers finally got something going, and it came on the shoulder of the ground game and Josh Jacobs. They ran it 10 times on a 12 play drive and Jacobs ran his first of three TDs in to get Green Bay on the board.

as.com

It was all Lions to start off the night. Their defense came into the night banged up and the Lions had to rely on a bunch of second stringers but they rose to the occasion, especially in the first half. The Packers didn't get much going on their first two drives and just when it looked like Jordan Love and Christian Watson hooked up for the first big play of the game, Carlton Davis III knocked it out of the WR's ands and David Long Jr. pounced on it. That led to a Jake Bates field goal that put DET up 10-0 early in the second quarter.

as.com

The Detroit Lions came into the night as the hottest team in the league and they ended the night as the hottest team in the league after rattling off their 11th straight win. It took all 60 minutes but Jake Bates put the Packers to the sword with a game winning 35 yard FG as time expired.

The Lions got the ball to start the night and marched it down the field on an 11 play drive was extended after an illegal contact flag on GB on 3rd and Goal. On the next play, David Montgomery ran it in from four yards out for the first of a whole bunch of TDs from Detroit.

Tonight’s odds

Taking a look at tonight’s odds, the Lions are the favorite to continue their 10 game win streak tonight in Detroit. They are a 3.5 point favorite over the Packers and the Over/Under is set at 51.5 points.

Packers vs. Lions spread: Detroit -3.5

Packers vs. Lions over/under: 51.5 points

Both of these teams are coming off of games last Thursday, which is always important to consider in “short week” games. I think both of these teams come into this team fresh, and ready for a scrap. The Lions are going to want to run and run, and the question is going to be can the Packers keep up? Josh Jacobs has been excellent especially in the last few games, but this games is going to come down to Jordan Love and Jared Goff. I’m taking Goff and the Lions in a shootout.

Lions win 42-27.

NFC Standings

Taking a look at the standings in the NFC we see there’s two teams right in the thick of the race for the one seed. The Lions are at the top of the division and conference table at 11-1, but right below them you have the 10-2 Vikings and the 10-2 Eagles. Sitting a couple games back of first place are the Packers who know if they are going to have any chance at a one seed and home field advantage throughout the playoffs they are going to need to win this game tonight. Behind the Packers sit the Commanders at 8-5 heading into their BYE week. They will be finishing out the regular season trying to hold on to the final Wild Card spot as the other two will almost certainly be taken by NFC North teams.

Previous match up

The last game between these two teams came back in Week 9 in Green Bay. Jordan Love came into the game banged up after hurting his groin the week before against Jacksonville. He was a bit hindered and that was never more evident than on his interception that got taken back for a TD by Kerby Joseph right before the halftime break. That would cap a 17-0 second quarter which put the Lions up 17-3 heading into the final 30 minutes in Detroit first game played outside all season. Jahmyr Gibbs ran in a 15 yard TD to stretch the lead to 24-3 early in the 3rd quarter and the defense took control from there. Goff went 18/22 for 145 yards while the Sonic and Knuckles combined for 138 yards and a TD while the defense held Green Bay to 0-3 in the red zone for the first 57 minutes of the game to close out the 24-14 victory.

Star watch: Lions

Jarden Goff is the conductor of this offense but the motor of the backfield in the Motor City is run by the best tandem of RBs in the league. David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, otherwise known as Sonic and Knuckles, are two of the best backs in the league on their own. When they unite forces they, and the Lions offense are almost impossible to slow down. Gibbs is the fourth leading rusher in the league with 987 yards, and he is averaging 6.0 yards per carry, just 0.1 behind the league leader Saquon Barkley. He’s got 10 rushing TDs on the season and Montgomery has 11 to go along with his 720 yards rushing. Together they have 1,807 yards and 21 TDs, which is more than any RB duo in the league, and the best part of Sonic and Knuckle is they are good buddies, who get along great with no jealousy or competition between them.

Star watch: Packers

Jordan Love is not quite getting the credit he deserves as the QB of a 9-3 team. Sure, Josh Jacobs has come into Green Bay and made a massive difference but Love is the key to this team. In the last couple games, in which the Packers have looked dominant for the first time this season, Love hasn’t needed to be great, he has needed to be efficient and mistake free. His 11 INTs are tied for 3rd most in the league, and he had thrown a pick in every game up until the Niners game two weeks ago. He has 2,518 yards, 20 TDs and 11 picks while completing 63% of his passes. His numbers aren’t astonishing but they don’t need to be. The Packers have found a key to success and that’s starting hot early and protecting their lead for the rest of the game. Let’s see how Love and the Packers come out tonight against a disciplined Detroit defense.

Season recap: Lions

We all knew the Lions were going to be great this year after coming just short of a trip to the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history last season. They came into the season and had a tough opening match up with their former face of the franchise Matt Stafford. They would beat the Rams in OT, and then lose their next game to the Tampa Bay Bucs, but as Dan Campbell coached teams usually do, they responded in a big way. They have won 10 straight games since then, and the only games that were even relatively close were games against the Vikings, and a game against the Texans in which Jared Goff threw five picks. The offense is capable of putting up 50 in any given game, the defense can shut down any given offense and Jake Bates and the special teams have been perfect up until last week. They are at the top of the NFC, but need to keep winning because there are a few teams right on their heels, including the Packers.

Season recap: Packers

The Packers came into the season with high hopes of another playoff run after Jordan Love’s first season as QB1 in GB led to an appearance in the divisional round of the playoffs. The Pack started the season in Brazil and would lose to the Eagles to open the season. Love got injured in that game, and Malik Willis was able to hold down the fort for the next couple games. Love came back for a  Week 4 loss to the Vikings that dropped them to 2-2 after the first month of the season. They got hot after that winning their next four, including a big win over the Houston Texans who at that moment in the season were a good team. Their next loss would come to the Lions in Lambeau right before their BYE in Week 10. Since then they have rattled off three straight wins against the Bears with a “block off” a blowout of the Niners and a blowout of the Dolphins. The Packers are teetering on the edge of being elite, and depending how they come out tonight, they could be considered elite by the end of the night.

Last game: Lions

The Lions looked like they were on their way to another blowout victory in the early game on Thanksgiving. Detroit went up 16-0 with a TD and three Jake Bates field goals before the Bears got their first first down, but a Jahmyr Gibbs fumble in the red zone let the Bears off the hook right before halftime and Chicago would take that momentum into the second half, scoring a TD on the opening drive of the third quarter. DET responded with a Jared Goff found Sam LaPorta on their second TD connection of the day to push the lead back to 16, but Caleb Williams and the Bears came roaring back. CHI scored a TD early in the 4th quarter, and Bates missed his first field goal of the season which opened the door for the Bears to close the 10 point gap. Williams hit DJ Moore on a 31 yard TD pass with 5:36 to go, forced a Lions three and out and had a chance to tie the game up with a field goal in the last seconds but a horrible bit of clock management cost the Bears the game and Mike Eberflus is job.

Last game: Packers

The Packers have made a habit of starting the game swinging for the fences over the last few games. That’s exactly what they did on a frigid Thanksgiving night against the Dolphins. They got stopped on a three and out to open the game but a muffed punt gave them the ball inside the MIA 10, and three plays later Jayden Reed caught the opening TD pass of the game. The next time they got the ball Green Bay drove down the field and Josh Jacobs put them up two TDs with a one yard run into the end zone, and the Packers wouldn’t look back from there. Love threw a second TD pass to Reed right before the half and Brandon McManus drilled a FG as time expired in the first half to put the Pack up 24-3. Miami would score a couple consolation TDs, in the second half, but Love who went 21/28 for 274 yards and 2 TDs was in control all night as the Packers won their third straight and seventh in their last eight.

We are live from Detroit

Hello everyone and welcome to the Motor City where the Detroit Lions are on a 10 game run that has them at the top of the NFC Standings, but there is not much breathing room at the peak of the conference. There are some teams nipping at their heels and two of those teams are in the loaded NFC North. One of those teams comes into Detroit trying put an end to their win streak and knock them out of first place. The Lions are coming off a divisional win on Thanksgiving that got a little tricky towards the end of the game. There was nothing tricky about the Packers game against the Dolphins from Lambeau last week. They dominated from start to finish for a second straight week, and look to carry that momentum into tonight’s seismic match up that will shape the playoff picture in the NFC.
