Tua Tagovailoa was the latest quarterback to sign a multi-year, mega contract extension with his team in what’s been an offseason full of big money deals for some of the most highly prized gunslingers in the game. Reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes may not be the highest paid player in the game, but says he supports these contracts and is happy for his fellow QBs.

Young QBs getting paid

Each of the richest contracts in the game, when it comes to APY (average per year), have been signed this offseason. Tagovailoa rounds up the top four APY paid quarterbacks at $53,100,00 a year, after seeing Trevor Lawrence, Jordan Love and Joe Burrow all sign multi year deals worth an average of $55,000,000 per season.

While the contract details are staggering, the quarterbacks getting these deals haven’t established themselves as Super Bowl winners. Their statistics have been enough to convince their owners to cough up the big bucks despite never having lifted the Lombardi Trophy.

Patrick Mahomes has won three Super Bowl titles, but after the recent big money deals being shelled out around the league, he now sits outside the Top 10 paid QBs in the league. Despite being on the outside looking in he told USA Today Sports, , “It’s awesome for the game of football, It’s awesome for the quarterback position, but I think all positions.”

KC keeping Mahomes for long run

Mahomes signed a 10-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs back in 2023, and while the APY may have him making a “measly” $45,000,000 a year, it is the richest contract ever signed in the NFL, potentially totaling a half of a billion dollars. No one deserves to have that sort of trust from their franchise more than Mahomes. In seven years with the Chiefs, he’s won three Super Bowls, two NFL MVPs and has quickly put himself in the same conversation as Tom Brady for the greatest ever.

“I know every time a contract comes up, everybody looks at my APY [average per year] and everything like that. I’m doing pretty well myself. For me, it’s just about going out there trying to win football games, trying to make money for my family at the end of the day. I feel like I’m doing a great job of that.”

The Kansas City QB is coming off of one of his worst statistical seasons of his career. Despite that he and the Chiefs still managed to win their second straight Super Bowl and third in five years. Mahomes may not be the highest paid player in the league, but his contract will keep him swimming in the green while the Chiefs can build a contending team around him.

“I think we do a great job of managing my money, to be able to pay me a lot of money and keep a good team around me,” Mahomes told USA Today Sports. “I know we’ve kind of restructured it a couple of times and got the cash flow up in certain spots and certain years. It’s about having a good dialogue, good communication with the front office, with ownership. We’ve done that here. And as we’ve been able to allow me to be a highly paid guy while at the same time build a great team around me.
