Ciudad de México Update:

After seven long months away from the field, NFL excitement returns Thursday, September 4, with the 2025 season opener. For teams not considered immediate contenders, every glimpse of potential can lift fan expectations. The New England Patriots are no exception.

Will Stefon Diggs play for the Patriots against the Raiders in Week 1?

Under new leadership from Mike Vrabel, following Jerod Mayo’s disappointing tenure, the Patriots appear, at first glance, refreshed in nearly every aspect: a stronger connection with fans, a competitive roster, and an experienced coaching staff. Still, as with many teams, hopes largely hinge on the performance of their star players. Stefon Diggs is committed and ready for the start.

After 10 months sidelined by a ligament injury, the veteran Patriots receiver is set for the season opener. Initially, his return was expected to be gradual, but Diggs’ dedication has him already talking about the partnership he hopes to form with quarterback Drake Maye, despite not seeing any preseason action.

“It’s fun,” Diggs said at a press conference. “He’s a young quarterback. He has a lot of confidence. He has a strong arm. He plays with that confidence. (We’re) at that time in camp where everyone is trying to peak at the right time. Seeing a lot of good things.

“At this stage in my career, I’m excited to get on the field and challenge the defense, make the most of every opportunity. My wide receivers coach, Todd Downing, says, ‘Enjoy what you have.’ If everyone makes plays, no matter how many targets I get, that’s what matters. Right now, it’s about squeezing the lemon and making fruit punch. That’s what I’m trying to do,” Diggs added.

Maye responds with Diggs optimism

Rookie quarterback Maye expressed similar enthusiasm, highlighting the promise of the connection with Diggs once they find their game rhythm.

“It’s been awesome to bond with such a high-level player. It continues to show as the game week and game day comes closer and closer. He’s elevating his game, elevating his practice style. I’m looking forward to getting out there with him on Sunday. I think we’ll see a good energy from Stef. I’m looking forward to getting him the rock and letting him do his thing.” Maye said ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders, the Patriots’ first game of the season.
