The New England Patriots win just their third game of the season and they do it against a playoff hopeful that just saw their post season chance get a little slimmer. The Steelers lose their second straight game, and both of those losses came to teams with 10+ losses. How will Pittsburgh bounce back after a two game slide late in the season?
The Steelers tried a trick play with an end around to Heyward ended up throwing it, and almost having it picked off. On second down, Trubisky snuck it in and then hit Pat Freiermuth for the two point conversion to close the Pats to within three early in the 4th quarter.
Trubisky ended the night with 190 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT but that probably won't be enough to calm the nerves of Steelers fans in the absence of Kenny Pickett.
The Steelers came up with a big pick, their only turnover of the night but Trubisky and the offense got stopped on 4th and short inside the 10. On the ensuing drive it was the special teams that came up with a big play to give the Steelers great field position to set up their second TD of the night.
The Steelers showed a sign of life late in the second quarter when Mitch Trubisky hit Diontae Johnson on this 25 yard TD pass right before the half to give the frustrated fans hope in Pittsburgh.
Zappe looked like Tom Brady for 30 minutes in Pittsburgh. He had 150+ yards and 3 TDs in the first half including his second to Hunter, and ended up with 240 yards and three TDs with 1 INT that made things interesting in the second half.
A few plays after the INT, Bailey Zappe hit Hunter Henry in the back of the endzone for New England's second TD of the first half. Pittsburgh's defense didn't look themselves in the first half, and it could have been attributed to the injury to TJ Watt on the first play of the night. He played through the pain, but neither he nor the Steelers looked themselves, especially in the first half.
For as bad as the offense was for the Pats over the last month, the defense held their opponents to 10 points or less in their last three games, something that has never been done in the NFL before. Jabrill Peppers picked off Mitch Trubisky who was booed early and often by the crowd at Acrisure.
The Patriots came in to Thursday night averaging 12 points per game and just over 4 pgg over their previous three games, but they came out and drove right down the field on the opening drive of the night. Bailey Zappe started his fantastic first half with this 11 yard TD pass to Ezekiel Elliott who stepped in to the starting role with Rhamondre Stevenson injured.

WE ARE UNDERWAY FROM PITTSBURGH!!!
Get ready for a wild ride from Acrisure. Steelers won the toss and they differed so the Pats take over from the 25 to start the game.
Tonight's odds
We have already talked about the Over/Under so let's focus on the spread. The Steelers are 5.5 point favorites over the Pats tonight from Acrisure.
I like the Steelers to win this game, but I don't think they have the offensive firepower to "blowout" the Pats. I'm taking New England to keep it close tonight in Pittsburgh.
Steelers win 13-10.
Stevenson out
One of the Patriots only forms of offense this season will be unavailable tonight against the Steelers. Rhamondre Stevenson suffered a high ankle sprain against the Chargers last week and he will be out for a “few weeks.” Of the 16 TDs the Pats offense has scored this season, Stevenson has scored four, and his 857 total yards (619 rushing and 238 receiving) accounts for almost a quarter of all the yards the Pats have gained this season. An already stagnant offense will have to find a way to make up for his absence and more.
Offensive offenses
OFFENSIVE OFFENSES
Get ready for a stinkfest tonight from Pittsbugh. I hate to put it so bluntly, but there is no other way to hype this game up. Both of these offenses are bottom five of the league in a season that is becoming notorious for having some of the worst teams we have seen EVER. Pittsburgh is averaging 16 points a game (28th in the league), while the Pats are averaging 12.3 points an outing (32nd in the league). Only 11 teams in the NFL era have averaged less points for a season, with the 1992 Seattle Seahawks taking the cake with just 8.8 points scored a game. Aside from these eye popping stats, the Pats are averaging 4 points a game over their last three games. Tonight’s Over/Under is set at 30 which is the lowest total points expected by the bookmakers since the Bears and the Steelers played to a 21-9 final in December of 2005.
AFC Standings
Looking at the standings in the AFC, we see the Steelers somehow in second in the AFC North and if the season ended today, they would be the first Wild Card Spot which would set them up with a first round match up against the Jacksonville who currently have the worst record of any of the division leaders at 8-4. Behind Pittsburgh sit a load of teams just waiting for them to slip. Cleveland and Indy would be the other Wild Card teams if the season ended today, also at 7-5, while the Texans (7-5), Denver (6-6), Buffalo (6-6) and Cincinnati (6-6) are knocking on the door. The Chargers and Raiders also have an outside chance, each at 5-7, but that would be a long shot for both of those teams. The Pats don’t have to worry about the playoffs, instead they will be eyeing a top draft pick, and at the moment they would get the 2nd overall pick after the Bears who have the right to Carolina’s first round pick this spring.
Watt more can he do?
The Steelers defense has made a living off of making game winning plays to cover the butts of their apathetic offense. Tonight will be no different, especially with their back up quarterback under center. The Steelers offense has scored 16 total touchdowns, the defense has scored two off a pick six and a fumble recovery, and they have come up with 12 INTs and 16 fumbles this year. Tonight TJ Watt will be on the prowl looking for another game changing play to keep the Steelers in the playoff hunt.
He's their guy
There is no one we can really highlight for either team in tonight’s match up so lets go to the other side of the ball. Something must be said for the way the Pats defense has performed over the last few weeks. New England might be a laughing stock of the league but their defense should be praised for doing something that has never been done in the NFL. They have held their opponents to 10 points or less in their last three games and but lost all three of those games. Tonight more than ever, it’s going to be up to Lawrence Guy and the rest of the D to come up with some big plays and maybe a pick six or fumble recovery for a TD.
Pats last week
What can we say about the Patriots last game? Not much. They did absolutely nothing on the offensive end, and if we have to give them some credit we can say that the defense held the Chargers to just two field goals all game. Despite the defenses best efforts, holding a team to 6 points wasn’t enough to top LA in Foxborough last week. The Pats outgained the Chargers 257 to 241, but neither team got into the red zone and the Pats didn’t even get into a position to even think about a field goal. The closest they got was when they had the ball at the LA 31 but Rhamondre Stevenson fumbled and got injured brining their closes drive to scoring range to an end. New England punted seven times and on their last two possessions, they turned it over on downs on their final two possessions to drop their fifth straight game. Forgive the highlight or lack there of.
Steelers last week
The Steelers offense laid another dud just a week after putting up 400+ yards against the Bengals in their first game without Matt Canada as their offensive coordinator. Kenny Pickett was injured in the first half, but even before he suffered an ankle injury that will keep him out for the next few weeks, they couldn’t move the ball against an Arizona defense that is far from one of the league’s top units. Right after Pickett’s injury, the Steelers were stopped on 4th and Goal from the one and the Cardinals went 99 yards and scored a TD to “put the game out of reach.” Former Steeler James Connor would sentence Pittsburgh with two second half rushing TDs and by the time Trubisky worked the Steelers into the end zone it was much too late for a comeback.
We are live from Acrisure Stadium
Hello everyone and welcome to the Steel City where the Steelers are currently holding on to a Wild Card by the skin of their teeth. They have had essentially no offense all season and tonight they will be without their starting quarterback, Kenny Pickett. It will be up to Mitch Trubisky and the running game to lead Pittsburgh against a Patriots team that has been nonexistent on the offensive side of the ball. The Pats are hoping to finish the season off with what little bit of dignity that remains while playing spoiler to teams like the Steelers, and tonight they have a perfect opportunity. Don’t expect many points for Acrisure Stadium tonight, because these teams don’t know how to score points.
Pats vs. Steelers live
The Pittsburgh Steelers have a lot riding of each and every game for the rest of the season, and their final playoff push starts tonight against the lowly New England Patriots. It’s going to be an offensive struggle from Acrisure Stadium and AS English will be with you all night providing live coverage, stats, highlights and analysis from tonight’s Thursday Night match up to start Week 14.
