Update:

After 14 years with the Seattle Seahawks, Pete Carroll is moving on to Las Vegas for the 2025 NFL season.

The NFL veteran has signed a three-year deal with the Raiders as the team looks to challenge for a Super Bowl for the first time in decades. Carroll brings immense NFL experience but he has not come cheap.

The Sun reports that Carroll is getting $15 million per year to take charge of the underperforming team. The Raiders have not won a playoff game since the 2002 season, when they made it all the way to Super Bowl XXXVII. Since then, their only postseason appearances have been two Wild Card defeats.

Things have barely improved since the move to Las Vegas in 2020 and last season’s 4-13 record was the Raiders’ worst since 2018, when they went 4-12.

It is a brave choice for Carroll, who spent a year away from coaching after leaving the Seahawks last year. He should bring stability but the 73-year-old has a lot of work to do if he is to avoid becoming another name on the long list of failed Raiders coaches from recent years.

There have been four previous head coaches since the move from Oakland five years ago: Jon Gruden, Rich Bisaccia, Josh McDaniels and Antonio Pierce. However Carroll will be confident that he is the man to turn the tide and he struck a confident tone at his introductory press conference back in January.

“It’s about competing and proving that you have value, you have worth,” Carroll told reporters. “I don’t care how old you are. For anybody out there that’s old and wants to know how you do it, you freaking battle every day, and you compete and you find your way to get better.”
