Pittsburgh Steelers 24 vs 17 Indianapolis Colts summary: stats and highlights | NFL Week 12
The Pittsburgh Steelers held off the Indianapolis Colts for their fourth win of the season on Monday Night in Indy. The Steelers ground game controlled the tempo, rushing for a combined total of 172 yards and two touchdowns in the 24-17 win on the road.
No pressure for Pickett in primetime
It was Kenny Pickett’s first time under the lights in a prime time game and the Steelers’ rookie QB showed he was ready for the moment. Pittsburgh dominated on both sides of the ball as the defense smothered Matt Ryan and the Colts in the opening 30 minutes of the game.
An early field goal from Matt Wright on the opening drive of the game was followed by an interception by the Steelers defense and it looked like Pittsburgh came out of the gate firing on all cylinders. Najee Harris and Kenny Pickett would carry the Steelers early as Pickett was finding ways to move the chains with his arm and his feet. Wright would add another field goal in the first quarter to make it 6-0 as the Colts continued their struggles on the offensive end.
Their first four drive of the game ended in Colts territory, but they were only able to get into the end zone mid way through the second quarter when Najee Harris punched the ball in for a 6 yard TD run.
Flowers return ignites Colts in third quarter
Nothing was going right for the Colts through the first 30 minutes. They gained just 70 yards of total offense and went into the locker room down 16-3 after the first half. Jeff Saturday’s team came out and looked like a complete different squad in the second half and it started with an 89 yard Dallis Flowers return to start the third quarter. The long return led to a Johnathan Taylor TD just four plays later and just like that the Colts were back in the game.
They have a chance to take the lead on their next series, but Taylor fumbled on the one yard line to let the air out of the tires as the Colts were on the comeback trail. Indy would eventually take the lead after forcing a Steelers punt right after the fumble. This time it was Matt Ryan finding Michael Pittman for a 6 yard TD and the Colts took the lead for the first time with just seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Down 17-16, Kenny Pickett and the Steelers were not having any luck in the second half, going three an out on their first two drives after halftime, but as soon as they went down, Pickett and the Steelers stepped up and put together an 11 play game winning drive with under 10 minutes to go in the game.
Snell seals the deal in the fourth quarter
Benny Snell gave Pittsburgh back the lead with a two yard dash into the end zone, and Pickett then hit George Pickens on the two point conversion to extend the lead to 24-17 and force the Colts offense to beat them.
Indianapolis only got two more chances to try to tie the game up. They went three and out on the drive following the Steelers TD, and started their final drive of the night from their 7 yard line. Ryan drove the the Colts inside of the 30 yard line, but the Steelers defense came up with a stop on 4th down to hand the Colts their third straight home loss, and fourth loss in their last five.
The Steelers will look to carry the momentum into Atlanta for next week’s game against the Falcons while the Colts look to rebound against the Cowboys in Dallas next Sunday.
When it seemed like the Steelers were out of options and on their way to a road loss, their rookie QB constructed a drive that was finished off by Benny Snell, and that would be enough to finish off the Colts in Lucas Oil Stadium.

Matty Ice returns under Saturday
It seemed as though Matt Ryan’s time in Indy came to an abrupt end when he was benched by former coach Matt Rhule, but Jeff Saturday came in a put the Colts’ biggest offseason signing back under center as soon as he was named coach of Indianapolis. His numbers haven’t been jaw dropping since he came back on the field against the Raiders two weeks ago, but Saturday’s game plan is focused around running the ball while Ryan manages the game. The game plan was almost enough to hand the Eagles their second straight loss last week.

Pickett in primetime
Kenny Pickett has gone through a meat grinder of a schedule to start his NFL career. He made his first start against the Bills, and then played Tom Brady and the Bucs, after that the Steelers played the Dolphins and after that the then undefeated Eagles, before playing last year’s AFC Champs. Tonight he goes up against a Colts defense that has given up more than 20 points just once in their last five games. Tonight, he takes the primetime stage in the first Monday Night game in his short career.

The Saturday effect
The announcement that named Jeff Saturday the head football coach of the Indianapolis Colts came to a shock for many people. Despite a potential Hall of Fame career in Indy, he had no coaching experience and many people thought there were other coaches more suited for the job. Since Saturday took over the Colts look like a much more competitive team, and last week they almost beat the Eagles to hand them their second loss of the season.

Indy arriving
Indianapolis gave the Eagles all they could handle last week, and now they can continue to grow as a team under Jeff Saturday. It’s been the defense that has stepped up since Saturday’s introduction just two weeks ago and DeForest Buckner knows his side can carry the Colts to their coaches second victory in his first three games on the sidelines in Indy.
