2024 Pro Bowl: Thursday Skills Challenges

The NFL’s Pro Bowl Weekend got started off with a bang as the NFC and AFC’s best went toe-to-toe in the Skill Challenge on Thursday night. Eli Manning’s NFC side finished with an early edge of 12-6 after the first five events of Day 1.

Eli's on top after Day 1

It’s been an eternal struggle for the NFL. How to we attract the fans when the players don’t want to hit, or practice or really break a sweat for that matter? The Flag Football game is supposed to be the main event, and the culmination of the entire weekend, but if you’re asking for an opinion, the skills events are much more exciting.

The night started with a QB competition in the Precision passing contest. All six gun slingers that got selected to the Pro Bowl took part, with C.J. Stroud and Baker Mayfield reaching the final after finishing with the best first round scores. Mayfield edged the rookie quarterback out by a single point to give the NFC a 3-0 lead after the first event.

The High Stakes event might have been the most fun part of the night. It was a chance to see some of the best pass and kick catchers stack their arms full of footballs and try to catch punts. Miles Killebrew was the last man standing to give the AFC their first points of the event. The Steeler was the only one to make it through the third round catch a ball while holding on to another four. Even though he won the event he tried his luck at catching a ball with five other balls in his arms just missing out on catching a sixth ball.

More Skills Challenge to come on Sunday

It was a battle of the beefeaters next. The long snap challenge featured Jason Kelce and a handful of other long snappers in what was a team contest between three participants from the AFC and from the NFC. Kelce went scoreless as he sought glory, aiming for the smallest five hole, but Vikings Andrew DePaola brought the NFC back from the dead by going for the safe but steady one point target which was much bigger. He got a score of nine and had the NFC back in lead, 6-3

After that was the Closest to the Pin Challenge. We saw shots off all calibers while golfers of all levels stepped up to the tee. The top dog on the links was Cowboys Punter Bryan Anger who hit one of his two shots within two feet of the pin.

And finally we wrapped up the night with Dodgeball as the AFC and NFC would go offense vs. defense in a two round showdown. Both offensive sides won each round which meant the NFC goes into Sunday with a 12-6 lead after Day 1.

Next up

That was just the beginning. The next events of the Skills Challenge won't continue until Sunday before the Flag Football game.

Still to come is the Kick Tac Toe comeptition, the Gridiron Gauntlet, the Move the Chains event, a few head to head match ups in Madden, Tug of War and the end of the Best Catch contest.

NFC lead 12-6 after Day 1 from Orlando!

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

DAY ONE OF THE SKILLS CHALLENGE IS ALL OVER!!!

The NFC leads 12-6 after five contests. There is still plenty more skills challenges to come over the weekend as we lead up to the Flag Football finale on Sunday afternoon.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

The NFC offense against the AFC defense is next and the NFC wiped the floor with the AFC in that round. I think they had five players on the field when the last AFC player got knocked out.

NFC win three points and lead 12-6 after round two of DODGEBALL!

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

The AFC offense vs. the NFC defense match got off to a slow start as both teams are but things started to pick up as balls and bodies go flying.

James Cook got triple teamed and narrowly escaped or at least he though he did. The NFC thought they got him so it went to a REPLAY!!! This is serious stuff around here.

The time limit meant the court shortened and the AFC picked off the remaining four players left on the NFC.

The AFC get 3 points after that round. NFC lead 9-6 after the first round of Dodge Ball.

IT'S TIME FOR THE MAIN EVENT OF THE NIGHT!!!

DODGEBALL!!!

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

DePaoloa goes last and he pounded the one target. He ends up with 9, including a couple of golden balls!

That gives the NFC another three points after DePaoloa's come back win in the last round. NFC lead 9-3 after four rounds.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Matisccik is firing rockets and if he didn't hit a target but almost broke the wall in doing so. He gets awarded no points, and may the lord have mercy on that wall.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Linderbaum was looking and drilled an early three ball with a gold ball for double points, got a one pointer then a one point with a gold ball.

That leads the pack now with 8.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

McCoy form the Saints tried looking between his legs, but didn't hit a single one. He went 0-for, so I guess that disproves or proves the looking theory.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

We've got the Snap Shots contest up next an Ryan Kelly hit a three ball on the medium sized target, but went with a no look method that wasn't too conducive to aiming. I guess when your head is looking up your backside, your depth perception kind of suffers.

He got 3 on that run.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

The NFC win the Closest to the Pin Contest after Bryan Angers dinger that almost landed right in the hole. He wins it with a shot that was fit for the PGA Tour, or the LIV depending on where your golf allegiance lays these days.

NFC lead 6-3 after three contests.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Hamilton hit his a bit heavy on the first one but with a good line, but his second one skulled and went flying into on coming traffic on an Orlando neighborhood road.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Anger hit it on line on his first one but skied the green and then hit his second flush! That bounced a foot away from the pin, popped up and was within two feet away!

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

AJ Cole was dancing but it rolled to the fringe.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Love hit a pretty ball sky high but plunked it in the water.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

The Browns No. 6 (name too long to spell) hit driver and skipped it off the water up to the green before it fell off and into the water.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Ferguson landed on the green, but rolled off the back with his first shot, and then stuck it to six feet away.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Mostert dunked it in the Water and the AFC ended with one shot on the green.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Johnson admitted he stunk and the procceded to stink.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Ingold dropped his first shot not only on the green but 13 feet 6 inches away!

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Darius Slay

The Eagles DB guarateed a hole in one but shanked both of his shots and then blamed the wind.

Time to whip out the pitching wedge and hit the links! It's the Closest to the Pin Challenge!

Each guy gets two shots to try to hit it snug around the pin.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

After the third round, it's Killbrew who was the only one to make the catch with four balls in his hands. The Steelers wins it for the AFC and earns them their first three points. He tried it with five balls in his hands already having won and almost made the catch!

We are tied up at 3-3 between two rounds.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Round three players have four balls in their hands:

Bland and Abdullah dropped it for the NFC. LaPorta almost made the catch but dropped one and all of them came squirting out!

Skinner dropped it for the AFC, so did Smith. Mims let it bounce and claimed it was out of bounds, but it wasn't.

Kilabrew made as much of a diving catch as you could make with four other balls in your hand! That was sensational!

LaPorta is making it look easy.

I must say, of all of the contests so far, This has been the best one.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

The guys have three ball in their hands for round two:

Bellore missed one for the NFC.

Witherspoon also dropped one for the NFC.

AFC have 4 drops remaining, NFC have three.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Here comes the High Stakes portion of the contest.

Each player started with two ball in their hands and had to catch a punt.

Only one player from the AFC dropped it after round one. Not sure who, this contest is going way too fast to keep up.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Njoku went to a resort and used a rope swing to do a flip and tried to bring in the catch before entering the water, but couldn't reel in any of the three passes.

Much higher degree of difficulty, but didn't make the catch.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Puka went off site for his entry for best catch. He was at the local wake boarding park and he caught a pass while on the board.

Not bad. But not the most difficult one. And he got it on the second attempt

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

The Best Catch Contest is coming up next!

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Each QB gets six throws and they alternate..

CJ missed a four pointer in the endzone, Baker nailed the four pointer.

CJ comes back with a 4 pointer in the end zone on throw two, then Baker crushed a three pointer.

CJ missed his third throw, so did Baker

Stroud drills the moving three pointer to tie it up, but Mayfield hits a one pointer to take the 7-6 lead.

Stroud hits a one pointer, and Mayfield responds with a one pointer.

On his last throw Stround goes for the 10 piece but came up just short!

Mayfield and the NFC win the Pass Precison and take the opening event to take the first three points.

NFC leads 3-0 after the first event.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

CJ chose to go before Mayfield in the final

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

After round one, Stroud leads with 26, Mayfield has 24 and those two are going to the Final.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Tua is up next and he hits two short passes before getting a little lost, then finding himself for a four pointer on the sideline and a four pointer in the end zone, two straight three balls again, and his Hail Mary was way overthrown and to the left. He ends with a 16, the lowest yet.

AFC lead 63-59

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Hurts is up next, and he only hit one of his first four but hit his first deep three poinit throw, hit a couple of fours, drilled a five pointer on the right side for a 17 and his Hail Mary came up just short and to the right. Hurts so far has the lowest score.

NFC are up 59-47.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

It's a little tough to keep track of everything that is happening, but Minshew came out hot but then faded for a score of 21, before missing the Hail Mary wide to the right.

AFC lead 47-42

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Geno is up next and he started hot hitting three short passes to start. He missed two of the sideline passes, hit three of the stationary four pointers, but missed the moving three point and five point targets. His Hail Mary faded to the right and he ends with a 20.

NFC leads 42-26

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Stroud is next and he hits two of the one point short passes, both sideline throws, a couple three pointers on the moving targets and drills a five pointer to end with 26 before just over shooting the 10 point Hail Mary for a final score of 26.

AFC leads 26-23 after the first two competitors.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

We've got the three QBs for each conference going up in Rd. 1.

Mayfield hit his first three throws on the short route. Missd the out routes to the sidelines but hit a couple of deep balls to get to 24 and missed his Hail Mary, but that's a nice score of 24 to get the NFC going.

Peyton Manning predicts C.J. Stroud to be Pro Bowl MVP

The Texans' rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud had a stellar year, taking Houston to a 10-7 regular-season finish and then to the playoffs, winning the Wild Card round against the Browns and then finally losing in the Divisional Round to the AFC top seeded Ravens.

He started in all 15 of his appearances in the regular season, completing 319-of-499 passes for a rookie-franchise record of 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns, and just five interceptions.

Now, the favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year is in the Pro Bowl, just the second offensive rookie in Texans history to be able to say that.

Players missing the Pro Bowl

It should come as no surprise that the two best teams in the league would be stacked with players who were selected to the Pro Bowl. While it’s an honor for them to be elected to the NFL’s version of All-Star Weekend, members of the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs have something a bit more important coming up.

There were a season high nine 49ers selected to the Pro Bowl, who were unable to attend this weekend. Of those nine players, eight of them were starters. QB Brock Purdy, RB Christian McCaffery, FB Kyle Juszczyk, TE George Kittle, OL Trent Williams, DL Nick Bosa, LB Fred Warner and CB Charvarius Ward were all named starters while DL Javon Hargrave made the team as a back up.

The Chiefs had five players named to the Pro Bowl. Of the five Chiefs that will miss this weekend, three of them were starters. Surprisingly Patrick Mahomes was named to the team, but wasn’t named a starter, while Guard Joe Thuney also made the list, but wasn’t named a starter. TE Travis Kelce, C Creed Humphey and DL Chris Jones were all named starters for AFC, but they are back in KC getting ready for their trip to Las Vegas next week.

Snap Shots

Snap shots is a lot like the Precision Passing event, but instead of quarterbacks it will be long snappers and centers getting put to the test. Each contestant will have a series of targets of different sizes to hit. The larger targets are worth fewer points, and as the targets get smaller the snappers will earn more points for their team.

as.com

Kick Tac Toe

A kicker from each respective conference (in the AFC Justin Tucker of the Baltimore Ravens and in the NFC Brandon Aubrey of the Dallas Cowboys) will play a kicking version of Tic-Tac-Toe. They will take turns kicking field goals in attempts to connect three squares, or hitting five total squares.

Dodgeball

I think at one point or another we have all played dodgeball. Whether on the play ground or in gym class, we all know what dodgeball is. What we have never done is play against the world’s best football players. Four teams of five players consisting of the hardest throwers, best catchers and most agile athletes in the world will square off as the AFC offense takes on the NFC defense and the NFC offense takes on the AFC defense in the first of a multi-round tournament.

High Stakes

In this event, players will look to catch punts that are launched from the JUGS machine while holding a football in one hand. Once a catch is made a player moves on to the next round, and the catches get tougher. The player with the most catches wins the event for their conference.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Closest to the Pin

It’s got nothing to do with football, but there are plenty of NFL players who like to enjoy their day by hitting the links and playing 18 holes. Tonight six players from each conference will bring out their short irons and start pin seeking, looking to get closest to the pin. Who ever hits the best shot earns three points for their team.

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

Best Catch

It’s essentially the dunk contest of the weekend. The top pass catchers in the league will put their athleticism and their creativity to the test as they seek to dazzle fans and judges with the most spectacular catch possible. Each catch will be evaluated by the fans who will cast their vote online.

Precision Passing

One of the most anticipated contests of the night will be a fan favorite during Pro Bowl weekend. Six quarterbacks, three from each conference will have to hit a series of targets of difference sizes and from different distances, accumulating points for their respective conference. The team with the most total points will take the three points for either the AFC or NFC.

How it works

There are a series of seven events that teams, or players from each conference compete in. For every event won, the team or players will earn points for their conference. Those points will be added up at the end of the night, and then carry over to Sunday when the competitions continue.

Welcome to the Pro Bowl Skills Challenge

Hello everyone and welcome to the Thursday Skills Challenge from Orlando as we get set to kick off Pro Bowl Weekend.

We have a long list of events in store for you tonight - most football-related, others...not so much. After 18 weeks of regular season games and three weeks of playoffs, it’s time to see some of the best athletes in the world take a load off and have some fun while demonstrating their super natural athleticism.

It will be all smiles from Camping World Stadium, but don’t think for a second that the players competing in the seven events will take tonight lightly. These guys are naturally born competitors, and will want to put on a show, but walk away as winners as the weekend starts off with a bang. Here are the list of events that await us...

Dane ArlauckasJennifer Bubel

It’s the week before Super Bowl Sunday, and you know what that means.

While the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers prepare for the big game, we set our sights on Orlando, Florida where the the biggest stars in the league will put their skills on display from Camping World Stadium for the 2024 Pro Bowl.

AS English will be with you all night providing live coverage and highlights as we sit back and enjoy the Skills Challenge.
