There are lots of great events leading up to Super Bowl LVIII, but few have as broad an appeal as the Puppy Bowl.

Organized by Animal Planet, the Super Bowl Sunday event is played out by homeless puppies in search of adoption. This year’s clash is the 20th edition of the Puppy Bowl, also known as the Great American Rescue Bowl, with 131 puppies from 73 shelters involved.

Players from Team Ruff and Team Fluff will, of course, be playing for the ‘Lombarky Trophy’.

As for the game, the rules are very simple - to score, the pups just need to get the ball to one of the endzones. The game will be officiated by referee Dan Schachner, who has overseen the contest for the last 13 years.

It is a very successful initiative - Animal Plant proudly claim that every puppy that has taken part in Puppy Bowl since the first edition in 2005 has been adopted.

How to watch the Puppy Bowl

The Puppy Bowl clash plays a part of the day-long Super Bowl Sunday build-up and has become a favorite in households across the country.

The game will be aired on Sunday, February 11 on Animal Planet, Discovery, Discovery +, TBS, TruTv and Max. The broadcast is scheduled to start at 2pm (ET) / 11am (PT).

The idea behind Puppy Bowl is to get the message across that a pet is for life and to raise awareness of the work that Planet Animal do, with the aim of attracting volunteers to help out at the shelters, take the dogs for a daily walk or even foster a puppy.

Volunteers usually commit for around eight hours a month for a minimum of six months. More information is available from their website or your local shelter. Alternatively, contact the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

How do I adopt a Puppy Bowl puppy?

Anyone wanting to adopt a puppy that has taken part in Puppy Bowl can do so by visiting Animal Planet’s website or Discovery.com, where they will be directed to their nearest shelter where they can find out more information about the process. There are obviously certain conditions - for instance, being over 18 years of age.

But there’s bad news for anyone hoping to take home one of the famous Puppy Bowl pups. The event is filmed and edited months in advance so many of the animals have already found a new home before Super Bowl Sunday.
