Ravens swoop for ex-Dallas Cowboys quarterback
Lamar Jackson remains the undoubted starter at QB but Cooper Rush will become the first choice back-up.

The Baltimore Ravens have moved to strengthen their quarterback strength in the offseason, adding a new QB to provide back-up to two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson.
On Sunday the Ravens announced that they have agreed a deal to bring in former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Cooper Rush. The 31-year-old was an undrafted free agent when the Cowboys snapped him up in 2017 and he has remained with the team ever since, aside from brief spell in the New York Giants' practice squad.
Rush replaces former Baltimore backup Josh Johnson, the 38-year-old who threw just three passes across the 2024 season. Jackson has not missed a game because of injury since 2022 so Rush’s opportunities to impress will likely be very limited.

What is Cooper Rush’s salary with the Ravens?
Rush will probably take very few snaps across the 2025, assuming that there’s no freak injury to Jackson, but he will be well compensated for the move. ESPN reports that the Ravens deal is a two-year contract worth up to $12.2 million, with $4.2 million of that guaranteed.
It’s a healthy increase on the most recent deal he signed with the Cowboys, which included just $2.75 million in guaranteed money.
Cooper featured quite heavily for the Cowboys in 2024 with career highs for yards (1,844) and touchdowns (12). He replaced the injured Prescott for the final eight games of the season and proved a solid option. Across the 14 games that he played while serving as Prescott’s back-up, Rush had an impressive 9-5 record.
All that means that Dallas have some work to do to find a replacement for Rush with Prescott’s fitness still a concern. The situation is complicated by the fact that the team’s third choice quarterback, Trey Lance, is also a free agent and looks set to leave this year.
