AFC Standings
Taking a look at the AFC standings we see the Kansas City Chiefs at the top of the conference, clinging on to the one seed after their loss to the Bills. The almost got knocked off by the Panthers but they are still 10-1 after Week 12. The Bills had a BYE this week, but the Steelers lost to the Browns on Thursday which opens the door for the 7-4 Ravens to close the gap in the AFC North. The Chargers are currently in second in the AFC West with a record of 7-3. Both of these teams would be in the playoffs if the season ended today, and we should expect both teams to be in the playoffs once the end of the season comes rolling around. The Dolphins at 5-6 and the Colts at 5-7, and maybe the Bengals at 4-7 have a chance to make the Wild Card chase interesting, and the loser of this game will start to feel a bit of pressure as we approach the end of the season.
Harbowl: Round 3
It had never been done in NFL history. Two brothers facing off as the head coaches of two NFL teams. John and Jim Harbaugh have met twice before as head coaches in the NFL. Both match ups have come on come on very festive days. One was obviously the Super Bowl and the first one was on Thanksgiving back in 2011. The Ravens won that in a Turkey Day slug fest that ended 16-6 in Baltimore. The next year the two would meet on Super Sunday and it was John coming out victorious again. This time is was a much more high scoring game with the the Ravens getting out to a 21-6 halftime lead thanks to a couple of Joe Flacco TD passes. Jacoby Jones took the opening kickoff of the second half a Super Bowl record 108 yards to stretch the lead to 28-6. The Niners would battle back, scoring 17 unanswered points, but the Ravens held on to win 34-31.
Star watch: Chargers
Justin Herbert finally showed us a glimpse of what’s to come with his arm and a QB genius on the sideline like Jim Harbaugh. He had 297 yards and 2 TDs and had another 65 yards scrambling. That has been a big part of his game this year. He has been a prone to injury over the last few seasons, but so far he has stayed healthy and has passed for 2,186 yards, 13 TDs and just one INT. He isn’t in the top five of any category, but he is taking care of the ball and so far he has been letting his defense do the heavylifting. That might change here in the next few weeks as the caliber of teams the Chargers will play will only get better and better as the season goes on.
Star watch: Ravens
Until last night’s primetime game in which Saquon Barkley had 255 rushing yards, the Ravens had the best running back in the game. Derrick Henry has been sensational in his first year in Baltimore. He came into the week as the leading rusher in the NFL with 1,185 yards and 13 TDs. The Ravens struggle when he doesn’t see a lot of the ball. He has got less than 20 carries in seven games this season, and the Ravens are 3-4 in those games. In games that he has 20 or more carries, the Ravens are 4-0. Obviously they want him fresh for the playoffs, but the Ravens want as good of a seed as they can get before things get tough in January.
Season recap: Chargers
We didn’t really know what to expect from the Chargers who made a coaching change and offloaded a bunch of their top offensive weapons. They started with a couple of cup cake wins against the Raiders and the Panthers, but lost three of their next four against the Steelers, Chiefs and Cardinals. Since the loss to the Cardinals last month, the Chargers have won four straight games. Surprisingly it’s been the defense that has been the rock of this team in Jim Harbaugh’s first year in LA. Harbaugh is an offensive guy who loves quarterbacks, and he is in love with his QB Justin Herbert. We saw our first bit of offensive explosion from Herbert and the Chargers last week against the Bengals and if they are going to win this game tonight, they will likely need another big night from Herbert.
Season recap: Ravens
The Ravens came into the season as one of the favorites if not the favorites to knock the Chiefs off their throne in the AFC. They got an early chance to do so in Week 1, and just missed the chance to beat KC by the length of Isaiah Likely’s big toe. They inexplicably lost a double digit lead to the Raiders in the second half of the next game, but rebounded with five straight wins as Derrick Henry became more and more of a staple of the offense. Another head scratching loss to the Browns snapped the five game streak, but they would rebound with a win over the Broncos and the Bengals. They may have four losses but those losses have come by a combined 17 points. The Ravens can still look like one of the best teams in the league at times, but we know the narrative when it comes to Lamar Jackson and these Ravens. Can they win the big one? This isn’t the big one, but it is a big one and would certainly help their case in convincing people that they are still a team to beat.
Last game: Chargers
The Chargers had a Sunday night game under the lights at Sofi last week, and almost blew a big halftime lead. Justin Herbert passed for two first half TDs and J.K. Dobbins had another rushing TD to put the home side up 24-6 after the opening two quarters. Joe Burrow and the Bengals would come battling back and the one time impregnable defense of the Chargers gave up 356 yards and 3 TDs, most of those in the second half, but the Chargers had the last laugh. After Ja’Marr Chase caught the game tying pass from Joe Burrow with 12:21 to go in the 4th quarter, Evan McPherson would miss two field goals, and J.K. Dobbins would score the game winning TD on a 29 yard sprint down the sideline with 18 seconds to go in the game.
Last game: Ravens
It was a bloodbath in Pittsburgh last weekends’ AFC North battle between the Ravens and the Steelers. Baltimore had a rough start to the game against what’s been their black beast of late. Derrick Henry fumbled on the opening possession, coughing the ball up for the first time in over 500 touches. After the fumble, Justin Tucker missed back to back field goals in the first half. The Ravens finally got into the end zone with a Derrick Henry TD run from a yard out, but the Steelers forced another fumble that led to them taking the lead into halftime with a Chris Boswell field goal. The Steelers only kicked field goals, but the defense made big play after big play including an interception just two plays after Russell Wilson threw a pick in the end zone. A final field goal from PIT would stretch the lead to 18-10 with 3:35 to go in the 4th quarter, but Baltimore marched down the field and scored a TD with a Jackson Pass to Flowers with 1:06 to go. The two point conversion failed as Jackson rolled left and flipped the ball in the air to no one as the Steelers defense hung on.
We are live from LA
Hello everyone and welcome to Sofi Stadium where the Chargers are back in primetime after their Sunday Night win over the Cincinnati Bengals to rattle off their fourth straight win. None of those wins have come against teams above .500, but tonight they have a chance for a signature win over a verified contender in the AFC. The Baltimore Ravens come into town needing to rebound after falling behind in the AFC North race. They lost to the Steelers last week, but Pittsburgh lost on Thursday night, so this is a perfect chance for John Harbaugh and the Ravens to rebound against a his brother Jim tonight in LA
