Update:

This year’s Super Bowl features a strangely rare occurrence, a rematch from 12 years ago when the New England Patriots beat the Seattle Seahawks 28-24 in Super Bowl XLIX.

Although Seahawks fans will not have fond memories, the 2014 matchup will go down in history as one of the most thrilling in NFL history.

The game went down to the wire and Seahawks coach Pete Carroll will always be second-guessed about his last play call, which was a broken up pass instead of handing the ball of to their dominant running back Marshawn Lynch.

What is the biggest Super Bowl scoreline?

Back in 1995 the San Francisco 49ers became the first team to win five Super Bowls with an astonishing 49-26 victory over the San Diego Chargers. The 49ers had dominated the 1980s with four Joe Montana-led championships (1981, 1984, 1988, 1989) but his understudy Steve Young stepped up to guide the team to Super Bowl XXIX.

San Francisco had finished the regular season with a 13-3 record and led the league with 505 points scored, averaging more than 31 points per game. In the Championship Game the 49ers scored exactly 14 points in each of the first three quarters. The Chargers held there own though, scoring in each of the four quarters.

Here’s a look at the top ten highest-scoring Super Bowls of all time...

Super Bowl record scorelines

1. Super Bowl XXIX: 49ers 49 - Chargers 26 (75 total points)

2. Super Bowl LII: Eagles 41 - Patriots 33 (74 total points)

3. Super Bowl LVII: Chiefs 38 - Eagles 35 (73 total points)

=4. Super Bowl XXXVII: Buccaneers 48 - Raiders 21 (69 total points)

=4. Super Bowl XXVII: Cowboys 52 - Bills 17 (69 total points)

6. Super Bowl XIII: Steelers 35 - Cowboys 31 (66 total points)

=7. Super Bowl XLVII: Ravens 34 - 49ers 31 (65 total points)

=7. Super Bowl XXIV: 49ers 55 - Broncos 10 (65 total points)

=9. Super Bowl LI: Patriots 34 -Falcons 28 (62 total points)

=9. Super Bowl LIX: Eagles 40 -Chiefs 22 (62 total points)

For a single team, the Super Bowl points record is still held by that incredible 49ers team of the 1980s. Joe Montana’s fourth and final champions in San Francisco was a 55-10 blow-out against the Denver Broncos, with the 49ers scoring at least 13 points in each of the four quarters.

That team still hold the Super Bowl records for most points by a single team (55), largest margin of victory (45 points) and the most touchdowns scored by a single team (eight).
