Saints unveil new helmets which are being called “pope hats”
The New Orleans Saints are heading into a new era with a new quarterback, new coach and now a new look as the Kellen Moore reign begins in the Bayou.

It’s about time for a total refresh in Saintsland. It was a season that started full of promise was derailed by injuries. The Saints started 2-0 on the season, scoring 91 points in the first two weeks of the season. There was hope in New Orleans for the first time in a long time, but it didn’t take long for the Saints to revert to the “A’ints” of old.
Return of the A’ints?
Their quarterback, Derek Carr, half of the season before retiring shortly after the Saints Week 18 season final. Their coach, Dennis Allen, got fired after their first two wins were followed by seven straight losses. Darren Rizzi took over and won two straight games, but would lose five of their next six to start the season.

Now it’s Kellen Moore’s opportunity to get the Saints marching to a different tune at the Caesars Superdome and he can use all the help he can get. One of the secret weapons the Saints marketing and equipment staff will try to implement is a brand new, never before seen look. This year the Saints are going to debut a brand new, white with gold laced helmets to try and start a new chapter in New Orleans.
Pope hats to the rescue?
Some are calling it the “pope hat.” We’ll give credit where credit is due there. NFL Insider for CBS, Johnathan Jones coined that and you can sort of see where he’s coming from. Not to mention the new pope in Vatican City, Pope Leo XIV, is from the United States. Perhaps the Saints will be hoping for some divine intervention after four straight years of missing the playoffs. It’s a change from the black helmets they have been wearing over the last few years, in which they went 0-4 in games that they wore the alternate helmets.

It’s been a rough transition after Hall of Fame QB, Drew Brees, retired in New Orleans. They have gone through a handful of gunslingers since he hung it up after the 2020 season, and Derek Carr was thought to be the one, but injuries cut his career short and now rookie head coach Kellen Moore will have to figure things out with a shorthanded QB room.
The Saints took Tyler Shough out of Louisville with the 40th pick of the draft. They have second year QB Spencer Rattler who didn’t prove much in his time as the starter last year. Jake Haener has thrown 39 total passes in his two years in the NFL and Hunter Dekkers is an undrafted rookie out of Iowa Western Community. Coach Moore and Saints nation may need to be wearing these “pope hats” every week.
