Sam Darnold gets even with former teams after Super Bowl LX win
The Seattle Seahawks are Super Bowl championship for the second time in franchise history as quarterback Sam Darnold claimed his first Lombardi Trophy.
Revenge is a dish best served cold, and while Sam Darnold is too humble to admit his Super Bowl run was also a revenge tour, he did even the scores with a couple former teams in the Seattle Seahawks win over the New England Patriots.
Darnold completes incredible comeback
Maybe the right word for Darnold would be redemption. After being shunned from team after team in the NFL, the Seahawks quarterback landed in Seattle with plenty of doubters still chirping in the background. Darnold had a fantastic season in Minnesota last year, but the Vikings let him go after a couple of bad games to bring the season to an end.
He would up in Seattle on a three year deal after he was once again passed up on by one of his teams and all he did was lead the Seahawks to the one seed in the NFC, and NFC Championship and ultimately a Super Bowl title. It’s a story of sweet revenge for Darnold who lifted the Lomardi Trophy while the Vikings went 9-8 and missed the playoffs.
That wasn’t the only team that he got some vindication on with his win at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday night. Let’s not forget he spent time in New York after getting drafted by the Jets with the third overall pick before heading to Carolina for a short stint with the Panthers. The Jets, Panthers and Vikings were the only teams he was a Week 1 starter for, and now it turns out that he has as many Super Bowl titles as all three of those teams combined.
Darnold equals Jets one SB
The Jets are the only team to have won a Super Bowl of Darnold’s pervious teams in which he was the opening day starter. They won it back in 1969 with the famous Joe Namath game in which New York beat the Baltimore Colts. Since then none of those three teams have won a Bowl.
The Minnesota Vikings went to four Super Bowls. They made Super Bowls IV, VIII, IX and XI but lost all four of those Super Bowls and haven’t been back since 1977. The Jets won it in 1969 but have never returned to the Super Bowl since that famous game in which Namath led his team to victory. The Carolina Panthers have only been in the league since 1995, but they lost both Super Bowls they went to in 2003 and 2015.
Darnold also played in San Francisco, but he was not the Week 1 starter but started just one game late in the season with the Niners. Darnold was quick to acknowledge his past on the field after winning Super Bowl LX. “Everything that’s happened in my career.. but to do it with team I wouldn’t want it any other way,¨ said Darnold.
