Sam LaPorta’s contract details: Salary and years remaining with the Lions
Sam LaPorta has developed into one of the best pass-catchers in the NFL over the last few years, and he could reset the market for tight ends in 2026.

The Detroit Lions have emerged as one of the NFL’s best rebuilt teams, thanks to their savvy draft picks and a top-tier offense. A major part of that resurgence is tight end Sam LaPorta, who has rapidly developed into one of the league’s most productive young pass-catchers.

After two standout seasons, LaPorta is poised to command a significant contract extension following the 2025 season. With tight end salaries on the rise, highlighted by recent deals for Trey McBride and George Kittle, LaPorta could be in line to reset the market. Let’s take a look at his current contract with Detroit.
LaPorta’s contract with the Lions in 2025
The Lions selected LaPorta 34th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. He then signed a four-year, $9,465,990 contract with a $3,884,356 signing bonus and $7,517,173 in guaranteed money.
He started with a base salary of $750,000 in 2023 and by 2024, that number increased to $1,180,272. In 2025, he’ll be earning a base salary of $1,610,545. Next season, he’ll enter the final year of his rookie contract and is set to earn a base salary of $2,040,817.
But the Lions may look to extend LaPorta by the next offseason before he hits free agency or becomes a candidate for the franchise tag in 2027. And that deal could reset the market for tight ends once again, potentially reaching a four-year, $80 million deal. If that does happen, he’d be the first tight end to earn $20 million a year.
The Lions officially kick off the NFL preseason tomorrow with the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio against the Los Angeles Chargers. They’ll start the regular season on Sunday, September 7 against the Green Bay Packers.
