San Francisco 49ers and Nick Bosa agree to record-breaking $170 million extension. What do we know?
It would appear that the star DE’s ‘hardball’ approach worked, now that he’s got a record-breaking contract extension with the franchise after an impasse.
‘All’s well that ends well’ as Shakespeare once said and that seems to be the case in San Francisco after the franchise finally managed to sort things out with one of its best players. With a deal now agreed upon, the Niners can focus on what’s most important, the coming season.
The 49ers and Nick Bossa agreed to a mammoth extension
Talk about cutting it close. With just two days remaining before the regular season deadline, the San Francisco 49ers were able to tie up the loose end that was Nick Bosa’s contract situation. According to reports on Wednesday, the Niners and their star defensive end agreed to a five-year, $170 million extension that includes $122.5 million guaranteed. To be clear, Bosa’s new deal makes him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history. That’s not to say he isn’t worth it.
As the reigning Defensive Play of the Year, Bosa has more than proven his worth. Indeed, his 51 combined tackles, two forced fumbles, and a league-leading 18.5 sacks are a testament to that fact. It’s worth mentioning that he also led the league in QB hits (48) and was second in tackles for loss with 19. Of course, this is the conclusion of what threatened to be a very uncomfortable situation for the 49ers. If you caught our previous report, you will recall that Bosa was holding out for a better deal, and during that time the franchise turned heads by acquiring another defensive lineman in the form of Taco Charlton. Fortunately for all involved, the drama is now over and Bosa is set to be a 49er through 2028. Interestingly, reports also indicate that the team will waive all fines that came with Bosa’s holdout. This new contract has an AAV of $34 million.
Will Nick Bosa play in the 49ers season opener?
With the 49ers set to open the 2023-24 NFL regular season on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, head coach Kyle Shanahan was obviously asked about Bosa’s availability. In short form Shanahan stated that the DE would in fact be on the field, but for how long is the question that remains unanswered. “I know he’ll come in shape,” Shanahan said. “I know he’ll be good. We’ll be smart with it and it’ll be based off the next 2.5 practices.” This of course will be Bosa’s 5th season in the league after being selected by the 49ers with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. To say he hit the ground running would be an understatement as he quickly amassed nine sacks, 25 QB hits, and 47 combined tackles to go along with one interception in his rookie year. In the four NFL seasons that he’s played, Bosa has been to the Pro Bowl on three occasions and was named a First Team All-Pro for the first time this past year.
