All is not lost for the San Francisco 49ers in the 2022 NFL season.

According to a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter, the doctors who evaluated Jimmy Garoppolo concluded that the Niners quarterback will not need surgery in his left foot after the injury he sustained against the Miami Dolphins.

Garoppolo suffered a broken foot and head coach Kyle Shanahan had ruled him out for the rest of the season, considering it to have been a Lisfranc injury, which would necessitate surgery. However, the quarterback could return within eight weeks if he undergoes proper rehabilitation. That would mean he would be ready for the NFC divisional round.

After replacing Trey Lance in Week 2, Jimmy G had 2,437 yards, 16 touchdown passes and four interceptions during his 11 games. The former New England Patriots player completed 67.2 percent of the shots he attempted.

In the 31-year-old’s absence, Shanahan’s alternatives are rookie Brock Purdy and veteran Josh Johnson. Purdy was Mr. Irrelevant in the last college recruiting process but performed well replacing Garoppolo last week. Johnson has been a part of 14 different teams since he was drafted in 2008 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Constant injuries

Injuries have been a constant in Garoppolo’s career with the Niners. Since arriving in San Francisco, the quarterback has suffered a torn ACL in 2018 and an ankle injury in 2020 that ended his season abruptly. He also sustained a shoulder injury early this year that needed surgery, leading to speculation that the 49ers would release him.
