San Francisco 49ers 17 vs 19 Cleveland Browns summary, stats, scores and highlights | Week 6

With no Nick Chubb, with no Deshaun Watson and with the Niners coming into town, it's the Browns who shock San Fran and the league with 19-17 win on Sunday from Paycor

Ford's 22 yard run set up the fourth and final Dustin Hopkins field goal that would win it for the Browns and give the Niners their first loss of the season. 

Walker had pretty good numbers when you take into account the defense he was going up against. He went 18/34 for 192 yards and threw two picks, but it was the run game that set the tone on Sunday. They went for 160 yards as a unit with Jerome Ford picking up 84 of those yards. 

Going up against the Browns defense is never easy, but it's almost impossible when you lose your top weapons. Purdy went just 12/27 for 125 yards with a TD and his first INT of the season. 

Cleveland would take the lead in the second half with a couple of Dustin Hopkins FGs and with Samuel and McCaffery sidelined the offense came to a halt. As it so often happens the San Fran Defense came up with a huge interception to set up the go ahead TD. 

It wasn't easy moving the ball on the Niners defense on Sunday afternoon and the Browns had to go into their bag of tricks every now and then. On 3rd down in the red zone their TE took the snap under center and pitched it to Kareem Hunt for a 16 yard TD. 

With no Deshaun Watson available, PJ Walker got the start and the Niners made life difficult right away for the second stringer. Fred Warner picked off Walker midway through the first quarter and it looked like the Niners were going to run away from it early. 

The first series of the day couldn't have gone better for the Niners. They drove right down the field and McCaffery put the first TD on the board with a 13 yard run to extend his TD streak to 15 games. 

McCaffery and Deebo Samuel would end up leaving the game early. An oblique injury sent McCaffery to the sidelines in the first half, and Samuel went to the locker room in the first half after suffering a shoulder injury.

Purdy's pass to Jennings was off the mark but a flag flies for pass interference.

Purdy looks down the right sideline for Aiyuk but that pass was too heavy!

Purdy's first pass of the drive was almost picked off by Newsome after he threw it behind Jennings.

SF get the ball from the 25, down by 1 with 1:40 on the clock. 

FIELD GOAL CLEVELAND!!!

The Browns take the lead with Hopkins' 4th FG of the game! This one from 29 yards out to give the home team the lead. 

CLE lead 19-17 with 1:40 to go in the fourth quarter. 

Hunt gets the the handoff and takes it 2 yards and the Niners will take a TO with 1:43 to go in the 4th quarter.

Walker rolls right and almost found Cooper in the endzone but the safety came in and broke up the pass at the last moment.

Hunt gets the handoff and gets a yard on first down. TO SF with 1:55 to go in the game.

Ford breaks one up the middle and takes it 22 yards inside the Niners 20!!! We are heading to the Two Minute Warning and the Browns are oh so close to handing the Niners their first loss of the game.

Ford gets the ball back on the left side and he gets 4 yards before running out of bounds.

Walker was looking for Cooper and the pass was batted away but the Niners are going to be called for holding.

Toss to Ford on the left side and he breaks a couple of tackles and takes it 13 yards for a 1st down!

Walker's pass to Moore was incomplete but he got laid out by Gipson and a flag flies for unnecessary roughness on SF.

Walker stepped up in the pocket and threw it on the run to Moore who was open again, but the pass was again underthrown.

PJ Walker and the Browns have under 3:00 to go to get into FG position. 

Walker had Mooer over the middle and he was wide open but that pass hits the dirt after some good pressure.

Purdy was under pressure again and had to throw it out of bounds, but that stops the clock with 3:03 to go in the 4th quarter.

Out route to Aiyuk who picks up 10 yards to make it 3rd and manageable.

SF get the ball back with 3:21 on the clock looking for a couple first downs that will allow them to kneel out the clock. 

But the first down play isn't going to help much as Purdy was wrapped up in the backfield and got an intentional grounding flag called on him.

The Browns go for the three points hoping to get the ball back. Hopkings drills the 50 yard field goal to bring the Niners within a point. 

Niners lead 17-16 with 3:21 to go in the fourth. 

Walker finds Ford out of the backfield but SF cuts him down for no gain.

Walker was looking underneath for Bell but the pass falls short of the WR.

Walker looking left to Njoku after spinning around in the backfield and had to get rid of it just to avoid a sack.

You knew the defense would have their say sooner or later, and Lenoir was there to make the game changing pick. 

INTERCEPTION!!!

Just when nothing was going right for the Niners, Lenoir comes up with the play of the day, picking off Walker's back shoulder throw to Cooper and taking it back 28 yards inside the CLE 10.

Scren pass set up for Njoku who got the first down, but a an illegal man down field will back the Browns up 5 yards.

Hunt is dropped in the backfield for a loss of one after Armstead broke through the line.

Purdy's pass off the back foot to Aiyuk was too far out in front on the WR and the Niners will punt again.

A false start backs the Niners up even more and after the penalty, Purdy tucked it and ran up the middle but slide after getting back to the line of scrimmage.

Hopkins drills the 46 yard field goal to put the Browns up for the first time with under 3:00 to go in the third quarter!

CLE lead 13-10, but there is still a lot of time left. 

Walker going to the air, searching for Bryant but the pass is dropped as the defense came crashing in.

The Browns punched back late in the first half with a 16 yard TD run on 3rd and 1 thanks to this Kareem Hunt run. Cleveland went into their bag of tricks to trick the SF defense. That's what it takes to beat one of the best units in the league. 

Walker is 8/12 for 106 yards, and has been picked off once. 

The Niners started off the day marching right down the field and scoring on this 14 yard McCaffery TD catch which extends his TD streak to 15 games. 

He's 7/12 for 72 yards and a TD, but the Browns are frustrating the SF offense. 

SF get the ball from their 5 after a great punt pinned them back ad Purdy will take a knee.

Walker was under pressure and looked initially like he underhanded the pass to no one, but on second look that could be a fumble and the ref is going to take another look on the review.

San Fran get the ball to start the game and their first drive begins on the SF 17 after a short return. 

ODDS 

The best team in the league is on the road today and the Niners are 9.5 point favorites in Cleveland with the Over/Under is set at 38. 

It’s tough to bet against the Niners right now. Cleveland’s defense is good, but I don’t know if they’d have enough to keep this game close if the offense was at full strength. With Deshaun sidelined it’s going to be even tougher to keep this game within 10 points. 

SF 31-10 CLE

RUN MVP 

The MVP award is usually reserved for quarterbacks. The last non QB to win the award was LaDanian Tomlinson in 2006. This year, there isn’t a single player that has had a better 5 weeks than Christian McCaffery. The Niners RB has 510 yards and 7 TDs and 168 yards receiving with another TD, and is the biggest weapon on a team stacked weapons. Right now there is McCaffery at the top of the early season MVP charts, and if I’m being honest there is not really anyone comes to mind who could challenge him. Maybe the only one who might come in a distant second is his QB, Brock Purdy. 

Garrett anchoring the D

The NFL is full of bad dudes, but the baddest dude in the league might be Myles Garrett. He is the captain and the leader on this Cleveland defense which is without question the best unit in the league. Coming out of their bye week, they are giving up less than 200 yards per game, (196.8) and are giving up just 15 points a game which is tied for third best in the league behind the Ravens, and of course, the Niners who allow a league best 13.6 ppg. Not to mention San Fran’s 33.4 ppg is second best in the league. The Browns defense is going to have to show that they are the leagues best defense today to even keep this game close at PayCor Stadium. 

The best in the biz 

For the first time in forever, the Niners offense might be better than their defense and that’s a scary thing to think about considering how good the defense is. Brock Purdy has his team rolling, but everyone has been chipping in. He’s got one of the top RBs in the game in Christian McCaffery and a WR room that is chalked full of explosive options. Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jenning and George Kittle have all been dipping their hands in the honey pot and Purdy is not shy to throw to any of them.

Browns are battered and bruised 

The Browns came into this season knowing a couple things. Their defense was going to be good, although I’m not sure anyone knew it would be this good. The other thing that was a given is the offense was going to get much better with Deshaun Watson in his second year as the CLE QB. He started to show signs of him getting back to the player he was in Houston, but a rotator cuff injury set him and the Browns offense and now they will have to rely on guys like David Njoku to take them to victory until their QB returns, perhaps in Week 7. 

Browns last week 

The Browns had a bye last week, but in the four weeks before they saw their top RB, Nick Chubb, go down with a devastating knee injury and their QB miss their last game against the Baltimore Ravens. With no Deshaun Watson, their rookie back up Darion Thompson-Robinson could barley move the ball as the Baltimore Defense locked them down and the Ravens cruised to victory. Lamar Jackson threw for two TDs and ran for another two as they would cruise to a 28-3 win. 

Niners last week 

The Niners had their toughest test to date last week against the Cowboys. Or, at least it was supposed to be the toughest test against a team that supposedly had one of the best offenses and defenses in the league. The Niners showed them what a top offense and defense looks, by completely dominating them from the starting gun to the finish line. Brock Purdy threw for 252 yards and 4 TDs, three of them going to George Kittle and the defense locked down Dak Prescott and the Cowboys offense.

Hello everyone and welcome to Cleveland where the Browns are coming off of a bye week looking to get back in the win column, but it’s not going to be easy with a banged up roster. Just as it happens, the best team in the league comes to town looking to add insult to the Browns injuries. No team has looked better than the San Francisco 49ers who have eased past their opponents for the first five weeks of the season. On paper you would think that this should be another cake walk but the Browns will be looking to shock the world in front of their fans today.
