Shedeur Sanders’ NFL debut comes with one big catch
Cleveland Browns’ controversial rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders gets his shot this weekend in his preseason debut, but it comes with an added challenge.

There is perhaps no NFL rookie under more scrutiny than Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Although he was a fifth-round pick, he’s been talked about far more than the No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward. Wrapped up in controversy from the very start, Shedeur will now have a shot to be taken seriously as he is set to start in the Browns’ preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers tonight.
Sanders hasn’t had a ton of first-team reps in training camp, so this debut is a huge opportunity for him. But he’ll have an added challenge to navigate while seizing the opportunity.
Shedeur Sanders gets first NFL start without best weapons
With veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett plus rookie Dillon Gabriel sidelined, Sanders, the Browns’ fourth string QB, will share snaps with newly signed Tyler “Snoop” Huntley, but is expected to get the bulk of the action.
However, he’ll be playing without top receivers Jerry Jeudy and Cedric Tillman, or the starting offensive line. Without his top weapons or backup protection, Sanders will have a harder time showing his full passing ability and will be more at risk of sacks, pressure, and hurry-up passes.
That puts the spotlight on his poise, decision-making, and accuracy. But a strong showing in his preseason debut could shake up Cleveland’s unsettled quarterback depth chart.
