Steelers 17 - 21 Lions summary, stats, scores and highlights | NFL Preseason Week 4

Jefferson got his second TD of the day to give the Lions their first lead of the game, and you could see him getting love from Coach Campbell and his fellow running backs. With a stacked RB room it’s going to be hard to get a lot of snaps, but he will just be hoping to make the team. He and Jake Funk will be fighting for that spot all the way up to cut day. 

Now both teams will have to worry about trimming the roster down to 53 men before midday Tuesday. After that all attention will be on Week 1 as the Lions play the LA Rams from Ford Field on Sunday Night Football and the Steelers travel to Atlanta to take on the Falcons. 

After a strip sack by the Lions' defense, it was Jemar Jefferson who tied the game up with this one yard run. Hooker was the leading rusher with 93 yards on the ground, but, Funk looked good with 40 yards on 10 rushes and Jefferson had 29 yards and two TDs on 9 carries. 

Hooker was essentially playing for the second string job in Detroit and despite his rough start, he calmed down and built a nice TD drive to cut the lead in half. He had a few nice passes, a great scramble to the 2 and then this TD pass to Jake Funk. Hooker played most of the game, and went 12/20 for 114 yards, a TD and an INT. 

Wilson got the start, and played just a series, which if you allow yourself to speculate then that should led you to conclude that he will be the starter over Justin Fields. Fields came in for the second series and led a TD drive of his own after the Steelers came up with a strip sack in DET territory. Pittsburgh sacked Hendon Hooker 5 times in the first quarter and pressured him countless other times. He ended the game 3/4 for 40 yards both QBs led TD drives for the first time in the preseason. 

The Detroit Lions won their final preseason game in their first game in Ford Field this year. None of the starters played for Dan Campbell’s side, but they made a 14 point comeback thanks to Hendon Hooker and Jemar Jefferson. 

While the starters didn’t play for Detroit, they did play for Pittsburgh and it was Russell Wilson who got the first series for the Steelers. He had a couple nice throws and then Cordarrell Patterson found a pocket of space and exploded through it for a 32 yard TD. Wilson was 2/2 for 26 yards on his only series.

The Lions win their final preseason game as Hendon Hooker may have secured the third string spot with his bounce back performances. Russell Wilson and Fields both looked good which should make Mike Tomlin's job even more difficult. 

Knight picks up the first down on the run up the middle and that's going to do it.

Knight gets another run up the middle and he picks up a few yards as PIT take their final timeout.

Fromm finds McKeon on the left sideline and he turns up field and gets a nice gain and a first down.

Knight with a run up the middle and he gets dragged down for a gain of one.

Fromm with a dart over the middle and he hits his receiver for a big gain and a first down. That will take us to the Two Minute Warning. 

A false start backed the Steelers up 5 yards and they decide to punt with 2:20 to go. 

Plumlee with pressure all around him and he finds Jenkins with a huge completion for a first down, but it's coming back after an illegal man down field.

Plumlee's pass to the left side falls incomplete as he was rolling that way and made it a tough catch for Jenkins. 

4th and 3 from the PIT 48. 

Plumlee hits Watkins on the slant to the right side and he gets 9 yards on the pitch and catch.

Shamplin is stuffed in the backfield and he's going to lose two yards on the first down run.

Jenkins moves the chains with a catch over the middle for 16 yards.

PIT get the ball back from the 20 and Shamplin picks up 4 yards.

Bates makes up for his miss in the first half with a 41 yard field goal to make it a touchdown advantage for DET. 

DET lead 24-17 with just over 5:00 to go. 

Fromm was looking for Funk on the wheel route and he looked like he pulled out of the catch to avoid the contact!

Funk gets the handoff to the right side and he picks up 5 yards to set up 3rd and short.

Fromm going back to Calhoun and the WR goes down and gets it at ground level for a gain of 16.

After a false start backs DET up five yards, Fromm finds Calhoun over the middle for a gain of 21 yards and a first down!

Fromm's pass over the middle was effected by the pressure and he couldn't hit Funk out of the backfield.

Funk picks up 4 yards on a first down run over the middle.

Fromm over the middle and it took Alexander two tries to make that sliding catch for a 14 yard pick up.

Plumlee finds Fitzpatrick on the right side for a gain of 5.

Plumlee on the QB keeper and he picks up 4 yards on the run to the left side.

Great return from Plumlee who brought it out to the PIT 44. 

Jefferson was met in the backfield by a defender, but dragged him over the marker for a first down on a three yard rush.

Hooker with another scramble, this time to the left side and he picks up 8 yards on first down.

Hooker rolling right and he tucks it for a 12 yard gain and a first down!

Hooker with time in the pocket and he finds Alexander with a dart over the middle, and the WR takes it 29. yards on the catch and run. There was a late flag for a horse collar tackle on PIT.

Allen with a beautiful pass over the top to Jenkins on the left sideline and he made the catch up couldn't drag his second foot.

Shamplin takes the run out of the shotgun up the middle and he picks up 7 yards.

DET get the ball back from their 19 after a holding on the return, amd Jefferson gets 3 yards on the first down run.

Wright drills the 26 yard field goal to put the Steelers in the lead with 3:20 to go in the 3rd quarter. 

PIT have a 17-14 advantage with the short field goal. 

Allen's pass to Heyward on the right side falls incomplete and the FG unit comes on.

Shamplin gets it back and he picks up 5 yards to make it 3rd and medium inside the DET 10.

Allen's pass to Jenkins over the middle fell incomplete but an illegal hands to the face on DET will give PIT a free first down.

Allen with a deep dime right in stride for Fitzpatrick who makes the catch and takes it it for a 59 yard catch and run!

Bates misses the 30 yard field goal, and that's not a good look when you are fighting for your job. He won the game last week, but missed a PAT too.

WE ARE BACK IN DETROIT FOR THE SECOND HALF OF ACTION. 

After a strip sack by the Lions' defense, it was Jemar Jefferson who tied th game up with this one yard run. Hooker is the leading rushed, Funk looked good with 38 yards on 4 rushes and Jefferson has 15 yards and a TD on 6 carries.

HOoker to the right side and his pass to Peoples-Jones was too far out in front of him. The WR made a career decision there. He would have got crushed had he made that catch.

Hooker under a lot of pressure again, and he gets sacked for the third time, this time by Welschof for a 7 yard loss.

The Steelers get the ball at their 18 and Fields is in the game for a second straight series. I Wonder if we see Wilson again. If not that would suggest he will indeed by the starter in Week 1. 

Hooker looks over the middle for Peoples-Jones but that pass skipped off the dirt before it reached the WR.

Jefferson is dropped in the backfield for a loss of 3 yards by Herbig.  He's having a big day on defense.

Wilson got one on the first drive, and Fields answers back with a TD drive. This time it was Perine on the 1 yard TD. 

Fields on the QB sweep to the left side and he stretches to the endzone but is stopped short of the goal line.

Fields with a laser over the middle for Pruitt who makes the catch for a 22 yard gain. 

1st and Goal from the DET 2. 

Fields out of the shotgun and he kept it on the RPO and dove for a first down on a 3 yard gain.

Roll out from Field and he finds Jefferson on the right sideline for a gain of 5.

Fields under center for the second series of the day, and he hands it off to Patterson for a 2 yard gain on first down.

For the third straight play the Steelers get to Hooker, this time it's Herbig with the strip sack and Lowry was there to recover!

Here comes Hendon Hooker and the Lions who won't be playing any of their starters. Hooker is playing for the QB2 spot, let's see how he handles the pressure.

When are NFL cut days during the preseason? When do rosters have to be trimmed to 53

Cut day coming up

It’s the day that dreams either come true or are shattered. There are a lot of guys on the field tonight that will be playing the the pressure and stress of cut day shadowing them for all four quarters. In just a few days coaches of all 32 teams will have to trim their rosters to 53 men, which means there is going to be a lot of players earn the right to be on the roster, while others have their dream shattered. This is the last chance to impress coaches before they have to have their official roster completed on Tuesday, August 27th. 

Lions last year

Everyone expected the Lions to be much better than we are used to last season, but they came out on opening day and took down the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs in Arrowhead to announce to the world that they are going to be a force to be reckoned with. They went 12-5 in the regular season finishing with the same record as the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers. They squeezed by the Rams in the first round of the playoffs before downing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the divisional round and set up a match up with the 49ers in San Francisco. They jumped out to a 24-7 first half lead, but the Niners would score 24 straight points after a turnover on downs and a fumble on back-to-back plays. The Niners tied the game up just 12 minutes into the second half and would miss out on a chance to get to their first Super Bowl in franchise history. 

Steelers last year

The despite the Steelers problems on the offensive side of the ball, they actually ended the season with a winning record and went to the playoffs. Kenny Pickett was in his last stand as establishing himself as the QB of the future, but unfortunately for the former Pitt Panther he didn’t do enough to keep his spot on the roster. He didn’t deserve all the blame, former offensive coordinator Matt Canada got fired in Week 11 after an inefficient first half of the season on the offensive end. Pickett Pickett injured his ankle in Week 13 against the Cardinals and Mitch Trubisky took over, but he lost three straight games before Mason Rudolph was named starter. Rudolph won three straight games to end the season, putting up 30+ in two of three of those games. In the final game of the regular season TJ Watt sprained his MCL and missed the playoff game against the Buffalo Bills. Without their heart and soul on defense, Buffalo cruised past Pittsburgh in a weather delayed game in Orchard Park.

Lions star watch

None of the starters played for the Lions in the first two games, so you’d have to expect they won’t be playing today against the Steelers. Dan Campbell has taken this team from the bottom of the barrel to the top of the NFC, and turned this team into a Super Bowl contender, so we are in no position to judge or question what we do. There is a lot to be excited about for this Lions team. They get their two headed monster in David Montgomery and Jamyr Gibbs returning in the backfield. They have Jared Goff who is silently one of the best QBs in the league. Amor-Ra St. Brown is a top pass catcher in the game and Jameson Williams will be looking to be the perfect compliment in for St. Brown. Sam LaPorta established himself as one of the most dominant TEs in the game in his rookie year and will only get better as his career goes on. ON the defensive end Aidan Hutchinson is the anchor of a defense that will be looking to improve from last season. 

Steelers star watch

Obviously the story of the day is the QB battle in the Steel City. The Steelers are one of a couple teams that has not yet named a Week 1 starter, and today’s game could determine who is start in Pittsburgh’s season opener against the Atlanta Falcons. Wilson missed the first game of the preseason, but came back and played well against the Bills after returning from a calf strain. Fields has played extremely well so far, going 5/6 for 67 yards in the first game although he did fumble a couple snaps, and lost one of those. Last week his 11/17 performance for 92 yards and another 42 rushing yards wasn’t enough for him to be named the starter. While Coach Tomlin has yet to decide a starter, he has said that Wilson is in “pole position” to be named QB1, but that can all change in the blink of an eye today. 

Last game: Steelers

It has been less than an impressive beginning to the preseason for the Steelers who have scored just two TDs in their two previous games. None of those touchdowns came while Justin Fields or Russell Wilson was on the field. Last week against the Bills the Steelers managed just 3 points as we got our first glimpse of Russell Wilson in a Steelers jersey after missing the preseason opener. Wilson went 8/10 for 47 yards as the starter before Justin Fields came in and went 11/17 for 92 yards and added another 42 yards on the ground. The Steelers managed just one field goal all game, and I guess if you have to take a positive out of the performance against the Bills, it would be that the Pittsburgh D kept Buffalo out of the end zone for four quarters.

Last game: Lions

Most of the attention surrounding last week’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs revolved around Patrick Mahomes’ behind the back pass to Travis Kelce that set the internet ablaze. What most people overlooked is that it was a pretty good game for all four quarters. None of the starters played for Detroit, instead it was Hendon Hooker and Nate Sudfield running the Lions offense as they look for a back up to Jared Goff. Sudfield got the start, and played well for the first half of action  throwing for 196 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT but it took the Lions over a quarter of an hour to get the offense going. Two Jake Bates FGs and a deep bomb from Sudfield to Kaden Davis tightened up the score heading into halftime. Hooker came out after the break and led a comeback while going 12/15 for 150 yards and had a 7 yard TD run that could have tied the game up with 5:30 to go in the 4th but the two point conversion was unsuccessful. A fumble from the Chiefs set up the Lions on the KC 7 yard line, but Hooker would fumble a snap at the 4 yard line giving the ball back to the Chiefs. Detroit's D held strong, forcing a punt and five plays later Bates kicked a game winning field goal as the time expired.

Hello everyone and welcome to Detroit where the Lions are home for the first time this preseason and looking to end the exhibition tour with a win, but more importantly, coach Dan Campbell will be evaluating the guys on the field today as most of them will be fighting for a roster spot.
