The Pittsburgh Steelers ended their preseason with a win thanks to some brilliant quarterback play from Skylar Thompson who led his team over the Panthers.
Update:

Show key events only

The Panthers seemed to drop their guard after the TD because Skylar Thompson dropped this 53 yard bomb to set up a Ben Sauls field goal to tie the game at 10-10 heading into the halftime break. Thompson went 11/13 for 152 yards and 1 TD, and is going to give his coaches something to think about when it comes to the back up job in Pittsburgh.

The offense would shut down for the rest of the night as the Panthers were held scoreless as Sauls drilled three more field goals to seal the Pittsburgh win.

Plummer who is fighting for the third string job in Carolina, went 7/14 in the first half, threw that pick in the end zone, but he did throw this TD to a wide open James Mitchell right before the half to put the Panthers back on top.

After the pick, Rudolph went to the bench and Skylar Thompson came on and continued his impressive preseason. He went a perfect 6/6 on his first drive and threw this peach of a pass to Lance McCutcheon for the first and only TD of the game for Pittsburgh.

James Pierre returned the favor for Pittsburgh intercepting Jack Plummer in the end zone. Plummer didn't have a great night, but had a good ending to his shift later in the quarter.

The Pittsburgh Steelers went into Carolina playing some of their starters, but not many of them in their final preseason game in Charlotte. Most notably Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf and J.J. Watt were absent as coach Mike Tomlin preferred to save them until Week 1.

The first quarter was pretty uneventful, but as soon as the second quarter started the Panthers picked off Mason Rudolph who got the start for the Steelers. Lathan Ranson picked off the final pass of Rudolph's night. He would head to the bench with 36 yards and a pick on 6/8 passing.

The Panthers got the ball with great field position after the INT but Jack Plummer tossed a pick in the endzone that was taken by Pierre.

Not much happened in that first quarter. The Panthers got a field goal, but that was the extent of the excitement. On the first play of the second quarter Carolina picked off Rudolph and it was the rookie Ranson making the play.

Cut day is coming: when NFL teams have to trim their roster to 53 men

Final cut day coming

It’s the day that every player on the fringe of a roster spot dreads. Obviously if it goes your way, it’s the best day ever, but if it doesn’t it leaves players in a pool of uncertainty and heartache. This weekend will be players last chance to impress before the NFL’s final cut day. Here is all the information you need about when cut day is, what it is and how it goes down.

Steelers playoff woes

There are some who say that Mike Tomlin is on the hot seat. That’s pretty strange when you consider that he has never had a losing season since he’s been in Pittsburgh. It’s true that the Steelers haven’t won a playoff game since 2016, but that could be more of a roster flaw than a coaching flaw. Since Ben Roethlisberger left, he has had an endless number of QBs come and go, and his defense has led them through the season and into the playoffs in five of those eight seasons. With Aaron Rodgers under center this Steelers team has a lot more hope and explosive potential than they have ha in recent years.

Star watch: Panthers

We are going off the field for the star watch for the Panthers. Partially because head coach Dave Canales isn’t starting his top guys, but partially because he is a young coach with a young QB and a lot of expectations for him to turn things around in Charlotte. The Panthers ended the season on a high note, and if they can continue that to start the season that will certainly calm things down in the Queen City. Canales has a chance to stop the coaching carrousel and bring some stability to the Panthers for the first time in a long time. That may be the case in a few months, or years but right now it seems that there are a lot of people second guessing the 2nd year coaches decision to not play his starters.

Star watch: Steelers

There’s no Rodgers or DK or JJ Wattt tonight so who do we focus on tonight? Let’s go with Skylar Thompson. He has been the busiest QB in the preseason for Pittsburgh and could take over the QB2 job from Mason Rudolph. He went 20/28 for 233 yards and three TDs in the first game and 10/15 for 113 yards and 1 INT in the second game. No one wants Aaron Rodgers to get hurt. We want to ride this wave all the way to the end, but if the Steelers see their QB1 go down, Thompson has shown in the preseason that he can handle the burden. He hasn’t played much over the last few years, but learning from Rodgers and in a system with weapons all around, Tomlin might have something to think about should he be faced with the decision to have to dip into his depth chart at the QB position.

Report on Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers signed with the Steelers at the beginning of June. He has had an express intro to the franchise and his teammates, and a lot of people thought he was going to suit up and take some snaps in the preseason. That wasn’t the case and will not be the case tonight. Rodgers is used to not playing preseason. After two decades in the league he has earned the right not to play preseason games, but he was open to the idea even before the first preseason game against the Jags. He didn’t play that game, or against Tampa and will not play tonight. Rodgers is goign to debut with the Steelers in Week 1 and we are going to have to sit back and wait until he makes his debut for Pittsburgh to start stealing all the headlines once he starts playing.

Panthers last season

The Panthers went into last season with little hope and for good reason. They weren’t a very good team, and it showed from the start. They got blown out in the first two weeks, and QB Bryce Young got benched in Week 3 after scoring just 13 points in the first two games of the season. Andy Dalton came in and carried Carolina to their first win of the season in his first start against the LV Raiders. The joy wouldn’t last long. They lost their next five games and Dalton lost his job too. Young was put back in as a last resort of sorts, and he thrived. He won back to back games, in Week 9 and 10 before going through a gauntlet of a schedule. He played well against the Chiefs, Bucs, Eagles and Cowboys but the Panthers didn’t win any of those games. He ended strong by winning two of the final three games of the season, both overtime wins to keep his job for his coming campaign.

Steelers last season

The Steelers moved on from Kenny Pickett last season and brought in Justin Fields and Russell Wilson just days apart. Fields started the season and didn’t blow people away with his performances but he was 4-2 through six weeks in large part thanks to the defense who held teams to 20 or under in five of those six games. Then Russell Wilson got healthy and was put in as the QB1 and the Steelers won the first four games with him as the signal caller. Things went south in a hurry. Wilson lost his first game to Jameis Winston and the Browns in Week 12 and the Steeles lost their final four games to back in to the postseason and would get knocked out of the playoffs in the first round by Houston.

Panthers last game

It’s been a rough preseason for the Carolina Panthers. I know these games don’t mean a whole lot, at least the final score doesn’t usually matter, but when you put up a total of 13 points in two games, with your starters playing for a few series in both of those games, things can get a little nervy. Bryce Young and the starters played a couple series in the preseason opener, and did get into the end zone after going three an out on their first drive. That was about the extent of the excitement in their 30-10 loss to the Browns. In game two there was even less to get excited about. They got shut down by the Houston Texans in a 20-3 game in which Young looked shaky as did the defense. Tonight they will look to get a little momentum going into Week 1.

Steelers last game

The Steelers lit up the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first game of the preseason thanks to stelar performances from their QBs Skylar Thompson and Mason Rudolph. No there was no Aaron Rodgers in either of those games, so the back ups took the stage and stole the show. They combined for 301 yards and four TDs, with Thompson accounting for 233 yards and 3 TDs in the 31-25 win over Jacksonville. Things weren’t as smooth in the second game for the Steelers who played a much tougher team in the Tampa Bay Bucs. Thompson, Rudolph and fourth string QB Logan Woodside all threw picks and ended up losing 17-14 on a last second field goal.

We are live from Charlotte

Hello everyone and welcome to Carolina where by all accounts the Panthers will be resting their starters according to head coach Dave Canales. The Panthers weren’t a good team last year, and their starters haven’t looked much better in preseason in the few series they’ve had, but apparently they have had enough action over the last month, and now Canales will spend tonight evaluating his fringe guys who are looking for one of the final spots on the roster. The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for their all in season, but we won’t see a lot of those guys who are set to be staples in the Steele City tonight. Aaron Rodgers and D.K. Metcalf aren’t going to play tonight but

Steelers vs. Panthers live

It’s the first of the final batch of preseason games that will run through the weekend as teams prepare for kickoff to Week 1. It’s one final chance for coaches to see their team in a competitive environment, one final chance to get a few snaps and build chemistry with their teammates, and maybe most importantly one more chance for those on the fringe of making the team to impress before final cut day. Tonight the Pittsburgh Steelers head to Charlotte to take on the Carolina Panthers for one last preseason game and AS English will be with you all night providing live coverage, stats, highlights and analysis.
