Allegiant Stadium is a multi-purpose, domed stadium in Paradise, Nevada, located southwest of Las Vegas. The stadium serves as the home ground for the Las Vegas Raiders of the National Football League (NFL) and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Rebels’ college football team.

It is relatively new, opening its doors just three years ago in 2020. Given its recent construction, Allegiant Stadium boasts impressive modern features, one of which is its’ retractable grass and turf fields.

Interchangeable turf

Allegiant Stadium was designed to accommodate two playing surfaces: natural grass and artificial turf. The stadium features a roll-in grass field similar to Glendale’s State Farm Stadium. This configuration allows the Raiders to play on a natural surface, which they prefer, while other events can occur at the facility without damaging the grass.

The stadium’s artificial turf field is primarily used for UNLV college football games. UNLV reportedly prefers to play on turf, which helps preserve the Raiders’ grass field.

The turf is placed on a retractable field tray, allowing the natural grass to be moved into the stadium 48 hours before a game. After the game, the entire field is rolled back out into the Las Vegas Sun.

When UNLV needs a turf field, the grass is rolled outside using electric-powered train rails. This way, the grass can get natural sunlight and water. The field has an irrigation and drainage collection system to keep the surface in top condition. The grass type used is typical in the southern parts of the United States. Bermuda grass, similar to the one at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, is primarily used for NFL games and golf courses in the warmer parts of the continent.
