If you missed the action, we can tell you the Super Bowl is now set. It’s the 49ers vs Chiefs and with that we’ll be taking a deeper look at the teams, starting with the average age of both sides. Who has the younger roster? Let’s find out.

49ers vs Chiefs: A question of age

Faithful football fans will know that the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs were here four years ago. What’s more, is that both teams had the same coaches and the same GMs. Indeed, one could even argue that the quarterback situation was similar. This of course naturally brings the question as to whether this will be a sequel or a reboot. Now, here’s the thing: As much as things are ‘similar’, they’re some distinct differences to note. For example, back in 2019-20, both teams had well-balanced young rosters. Here and now, the sides are at decidedly different stages in their evolution.

One of the main reasons for that is cash and a whole lot of it. Where the Chiefs are concerned, they’ve had to pay the man that many consider the best quarterback in the game today, Patrick Mahomes. They’ve also had to pay his accomplices such as Travis Kelce and Chris Jones. The 49ers have had a similar situation with several big names on the roster. Ultimately, what that has meant is that the Chiefs have seen the age of certain key positions drop, while the 49ers have seen the same happen specifically at quarterback with Brock Purdy. Nonetheless, they’ve both made it here which is to say kudos to them, and moreover, this is going to be very interesting.

OK, so how old are these teams?

Of the 14 teams that entered this year’s NFL playoffs, the Kansas City Chiefs ranked as the 6th youngest with an average age of 26 years, 8 months, and 30 days, while the San Francisco 49ers came in as the 11th with an average age of 27 years, 3 months, and 20 days. Could that year make a difference? While we’re not sure it’ll be the deciding factor between the two, it’s certainly something to consider in light of the above-mentioned points that were made. If you’re wondering which team in the playoffs had the youngest roster, that would be the Green Bay Packers who came in at 25 years, 8 months, and 3 days. They were followed by the Dallas Cowboys at 26 years, 4 months, and 15 days. Again, is there a correlation between age and performance, and more importantly, the age of specific positions?

Super Bowl LVIII will kick off at 6:30 p.m. ET at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on February 11th. Don’t miss it.
