Super Bowl champion retires on the eve of training camp
The New Orleans Saints are scheduled to begin their first training camp on Wednesday but will do so without the veteran safety.

Just one day before the start of preseason training, New Orleans Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu has announced his retirement.
The 33-year-old retires after 12 seasons in the NFL, during which time he played for the Cardinals, Texans, Chiefs and the Saints. His greatest successes came with the Chiefs, where he was a two-time Pro Bowl selection and a part of the team that won Super Bowl LIV.
Writing on Instagram, Mathieu said: "As I hang up my cleats, I’m filled with gratitude as I close this chapter of my life and officially retire from the game that’s shaped me in every way."
“From my first snap in college to my final play in the NFL, this journey has been nothing short of a blessing. Football gave me purpose, discipline, and memories that will stay with me forever. But more than anything, it gave me a community.

After impressing in the NCAA with LSU, earning the nickname ‘Honey Badger’, Mathieu was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in 2013 and went on to play there for five seasons.
When the announcement was made on Tuesday, Saints general manager paid tribute to Mathieu’s career in the NFL: “I just have so much respect for Tyrann and what he’s accomplished. He’s a legendary Louisiana player and a legendary NFL player. I really appreciate his time with us, he was fantastic.”
