The New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks have been here before, and it was one of the most memorable Super Bowls of the last decade.

Update:

When the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks take the field for Super Bowl LX, it won’t be the first time these two franchises have met with everything on the line. In fact, their previous Super Bowl showdown produced one of the most iconic and still debated moments in NFL history.

The only previous Super Bowl Seahawks-Pats meeting: Super Bowl XLIX

The Patriots and Seahawks last faced off on the sport’s biggest stage in Super Bowl XLIX, played following the 2014 NFL season. That game instantly became a classic.

New England entered the matchup led by Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, while Seattle was in the middle of its peak “Legion of Boom” era, fresh off a dominant Super Bowl win the year before. The game lived up to the hype, swinging back and forth for four quarters before coming down to a single, unforgettable play.

With Seattle driving late and trailing by four, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson threw a pass from the one-yard line that was intercepted by Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler, sealing a dramatic 28–24 New England victory. The play instantly became one of the most replayed moments in Super Bowl history and cemented that matchup as an all-timer.

To this day, it remains the only Super Bowl meeting between the two franchises, until now of course. And while the logos on the helmets may be the same, almost everything else about this matchup has changed.

The Patriots are back in the Super Bowl with a new era under head coach Mike Vrabel and quarterback Drake Maye, a second-year star who has helped guide New England to their 12th Super Bowl appearance. The franchise already owns a share of the record for most Super Bowl wins, and another victory would put them alone at the top of NFL history.

Seattle’s return is just as significant, if not more so. The Seahawks arrive with Sam Darnold at quarterback, completing one of the league’s most unexpected comeback stories. After years of bouncing between teams, Darnold has led a balanced, disciplined Seahawks squad to the NFC title and now to a chance at his first Lombardi Trophy.

Unlike their previous meeting, this Super Bowl is less about dynasties colliding and more about reinvention on both sides.

Regular-season history between the teams

Outside of the Super Bowl, the Patriots and Seahawks have met sparingly over the years due to being in opposite conferences. Their regular-season meetings have been infrequent but competitive, often featuring close games regardless of venue. Still, none of those matchups come close to matching the weight of what’s ahead.

Super Bowl LX offers a rare opportunity for a rematch nearly a decade in the making, but with entirely new faces, stakes, and storylines. For Patriots fans, it’s a chance to add to an already historic legacy. For Seahawks fans, it’s an opportunity to rewrite the ending of their last meeting and capture a championship with a new generation.
