WE ARE UNDERWAY FROM METLIFE STADIUM!!!
Jets won the toss and they differ until the second half.
Tonight's odds
Somehow, someway, the Texans who have lost only two games this season and are considered one of the best teams in the league coming into the Meadowlands as underdogs. The Jets are 2 point favorites over the six-win Texans and the Over/Under is set at 42.5.
I don’t understand this spread one bit. The Jets are desperate which I could understand might make this game closer, but the Texans being an underdog? I don’t understand it, and quite frankly I hate it. It’s one of those games where they are trying to get you to take the Texans, because someone knows something. If I take the Texans and the Jets win, I’ll hate myself because the spread warned me. If I take the Jets and the Texans win, then I’ll hate myself because the odds makers gave us a free gift that I didn’t take.
I’m sorry. Texans win 28-14.
AFC Standings
Taking a look at the standings in the AFC we see these two teams in very different positions. The season isn’t lost yet for the Jets, but if they don’t win almost all of their remaining 9 games, they will miss the playoffs for the 14th straight year. They are 2-6 at the bottom of a terrible AFC East, and there is only one team with a worse record than them, the Tennessee Titans. The Texans, however, are one of three teams that are sitting right behind the undefeated Chiefs with six wins through eight weeks of the season. There is still a long way to go, and Houston will have to keep winning if they want to even think about getting the one seed and home field advantage from the two time defending champions.
Texans title hopes take a hit
The Texans injury problems have been well documented. I know. It’s the NFL and everyone suffers injuries. Look at the Chiefs who are still undefeated after losing their top running back and top WR in a matter of weeks. Look at the Saints, who were 2-0 before getting hit by the injury bug and losing six straight games. The Texans, like the Chiefs are have overcome those injuries, but how long will it last? Joe Mixon went down with an ankle injury in Week 2. Nico Collins was the league’s top receiver before getting put on IR with a hamstring injury in Week 5. Last week Stefon Diggs on a non contact injury and the worst news imaginable was released after the game. Their blockbuster offseason signing will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL, leaving the Texans without their second leading receiver.
Star watch: Jets
While the attention and the headlines is focused around Aaron Rodgers, and the struggling offense, he isn’t the only one responsible for the flop. This team was supposed to be centered around Breece Hall who was supposed to make life easier for Rodgers and the passing game. That hasn’t been the case so far. He has only had one 100 yard game, and is averaging less than 4 yards a carry. It’s not easy for a running back to find a rhythm when he isn’t getting a whole lot of touches. The dual threat running back hasn’t had a game with more than 16 rushes, and only has four games with 20 or more touches. The Jets are 2-2 in those 20 touch games, so there might be something to that. Let’s see if they try to get him more involved tonight against the Texans.
Star watch: Texans
Last year, C.J. Stroud blazed the trail for the rookie QBs that are tearing through the league this season. Before their was Jayden Daniels and Caleb Williams there was Stroud. He had the best rookie season for any QB we have ever seen start from Week 1. This year the Texans are even better than they were last year, and Stroud is playing well but he is coming under a lot of unjustified criticism. Last year he went for 4,000 yards, 23 TDs and threw just five INTs. This year is is right on pace for those numbers, and could even exceed him, the only thing that’s different is he has 4 INTs already. Four INTs in eight games isn’t bad, it’s just not as mistake free as last year.
Season recap: Jets
Where do we start with the Jets season? It’s been a disaster since day one. They lost to the Niners in what we thought might have been a Super Bowl preview in Week 1, but boy were we wrong. They would win their next two games, albeit against the Titans and the Patriots, but since then have lost five straight games, made a coaching change, brought in one of Aaron Rodgers favorite targets from a past life to no avail and are now facing elimination before we are even at the midway point of the season. This is not the way things were supposed to go, but Jets fans know this feeling all too well and they are all too used to the disappointment. They can’t turn their season around tonight, but they will just about put the nail in the coffin to their playoff chances if they don’t win tonight.
Season recap: Texans
The Texans knew coming into the season that they were no longer under the radar. After their incredible turn around season last year, second year QB CJ Stroud and second year head coach DeMeco Ryans knew they would be getting everyone’s best shot. They started their season with a narrow win over the Colts, and then a one possession win over the Bears before they got walloped by the Vikings in Minnesota. They would get back on track with wins over the Jags, Bills and Pats, but their game against the Pats was the only game they have won by more than six points. Two weeks ago they took the Packers to the final whistle in Lambeau but the Packers downed them with a last second field goal to hand HOU their second loss of the season. They are coming into this game at 6-2 which is second only to the Chiefs, but it hasn’t always been the most convincing.
Last game: Jets
The Jets suffered their worst loss in a long list of losses last week from Foxborough. I could give you all the stats, and analysis of why they lost, but I think this explains it better. New York became the first team in the history of the NFC to score 20 points, no commit a single turnover and hold their opponents to under 250 total yards and still lose. Each of the 750 teams that had achieved that all three of those feats had won. The Jets however lost on a 4th and Goal from the 1 as the Patriots, who were called soft by their coach in the week leading up to the game, punched home the winning TD with 22 seconds left in the 4th.
Last game: Texans
Houston bounced back from their seconds loss of the season with an important divisional win over the Colts last week. It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t fancy but they got the job done to take a commanding lead in the division. Both teams went back and forth in the the half as CJ Stroud led his side into the halftime break with a 17-10 lead with most of his 285 yards and his only passing TD in the first two quarters. As has been the case with these Texans their offense slowed down in the second half as Joe Mixon controlled the clock with his 102 yards on 25 carries and the defense. The Texas had a chance to close the game out late in the fourth quarter, but a CJ Stroud fumble gave the Colts life. The defense took care of business to close out the Colts and move to 6-2 coming into tonight.
We are live from the Meadowlands
Hello everyone and welcome to Metlife Stadium where the Jets need to win. Nothing else will suffice for New York who has seen this team slump to the bottom of the AFC, and are starting down the face of elimination with more than half the season to go. It’s been one disappointment after another for Aaron Rodgers and the Jets, and tonight, on primetime they meet one of the best teams in the league. The Texans have comfy lead in the AFC South and are trying to keep track with the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs despite suffering a handful of injuries on both sides of the ball. Only one of their six wins have come by more than a TD, and tonight they come into this primetime game as underdogs.
Texans vs. Jets live
Two teams on opposite ends of the AFC spectrum kickoff Week 9 from Metlife Stadium. Both teams came into the season with plenty of excitement and expectations, but only one of those teams has lived up to the expectation. The Houston Texans are 6-2 hanging at the top of the conference while the 2-6 New York Jets have bottomed out and looking for a way out of this midseason crisis that has left them on the fringe of playoff elimination before the halfway point of the season. AS English will be with you all night providing live coverage, stats, scores and highlights of tonight’s game from the Meadowlands.
